Where was that? I used to patrol the Delaware from the Cape to Trenton. There was one boat that always outran us, based out of Rancocas Creek. A 19' canary yellow flatbottom named "Screaming Yellow Zonker". Wasn't hard to outrun us, though. The 40' and 41' twin diesel boats we ran had top speeds around 28 kts.
Were you stationed out of Cape May? We anchored there last night and could hear the guys training late into the night and right back at it early this morning.
I was out of Gloucester City. Running 40' and 41' small boats '75 - '77. Brought the 41' boats from Baltimore through the C&D when they were first built. Later, Chief Engineer on one of the 65' Harbor Tugs. ('81 - '84) Spent a lot of time @ Cape May. We took the tug down to break ice in the canal in the winter. The station moved across the River to Philly in 1988.
