Has anyone recently gone from diesel to a gas pickup? And been happy with that decision? I’ve got a 2007 ccsb lbz and been thinking about upgrading to a newer truck and it just seems like a gas truck makes sense at this point. I’m not towing anything heavier than the boat right now but the next travel trailer will match whatever truck I buy or keep. I want to stay with a 3/4 ton but will also consider a 1 ton. Maybe I should keep what I have until the wheels fall off.
Anybody?

I’ll say that my duramax is the only vehicle I’ve had that I could sell for a touch more then I owe after 2 years. I only put 5k down. And have over 100k miles. With as many miles as I put on my trucks I was always way upside down in every gas truck I ever owned.

I sold my 06 LBZ in my Avatar to buy 2 new Duramax work trucks 2 years ago. Recently Went back and forth on a new Diesel to replace the Crew LBZ I sold. Ended up with a new 18 1500 was almost half the price of similar equipped diesel . I also have a new reg cab Gas 3/4 ton. If you are not towing over 10k often the gas 3/4 will be good. Mine is rated to tow 14,500 but over 12k it does not like the load. Only miss the torque going up real steep hills or heavy loads and can drive a work truck when needed to tow over 12k up to 17k. The 1500 rides better and averaged over 20mpg round trip to river with a 25.2 best average for 50 mile. The 3/4 avg is 14-16 round trip with a 19.2 mpg best for 50 mile. I could not find a 3/4 gas 4x4 I liked but was going to order a 2019 from Jason at Selman. He hit me up about the 18 deals and the payment for 1500 and 2500 was same as a diesel. My boat stays at river but the 1500 can tow 9200lbs. Have not towed with it yet to see how it does.

I have an 06 lbz too. Just turned 200k Miles and doing head gaskets this coming week. I’m also going through it/rebuild/upgrade turbo, ppe exhaust , up & downnpipes, welded water pump, ppe oil pan, new ball joints, new cp3 & pressure valve.

I’m also considering a cognito 4-6 lift. I already have the upper control arms.

Anyhow. If you like the truck just keep it. I decided I’d rather have a 911 than a new truck right now. Maybe the 2021’s will be kick ass.

Just went from a 2012 f250 6.7 diesel at 16.7 mpg to a 2019 f250 6.2 gas at 12.2 mpg.

I was thinking about selling the diesel, because in the last year, I only put about 1000 miles on it, and all that , def,dpf shit I hear does not like to sit. I only drive it to the ramp and back, it had not done a re-gen in months, I bought a tuner last week and just did my first stationary re-gen, holy fark, that exhaust is like a blow torch with a rosebud tip, I’m thinking of deleting the smog shit, but then it’s impossible to sell.
I like that new power wagon too, but I will take such a bath on my 2015. Oh my, 1st world problems.

Sold our 04 Duramax for a 2017 Silverado 1500 with the 6.2. I like the truck so much better in every way. Cruising on the freeway at 80 gets the same mileage as the dmax did cruising 65-68mph. Cab is way quieter with wind noise etc.

All of the new trucks have so many more creature comforts than the 99-07 trucks.

I was on the fence with the new Dodge half ton Eco Diesel. Diesel is around 1.00 more then gas here. I did the math and with the up front 10ishk and fuel cost I wouldn't start making any money back until around 350,000 miles. Gas pulls what I need it to just fine so I stuck with gas.

I debated getting another diesel but went gas instead, no DEF which is great, but then i went old school and got a square body crew cab 4x4 and just have had a blast driving it around.

Get one of those in a 6.2 or a 6.5 diesel (smog exempt) and swap a newer diesel into it with everything deleted.

Bought a ccsb 6.0 gasser a year ago, love the truck, overall cheaper on maintenance, and it works for me as at max i only pull 10k. Im into this truck as it sits for less that 45k brand new and has all the options minus 4wd and leather. I do miss the mpg of the diesel though.

I was looking at 6.2 F250s, Ram 6.4 2500s, and then GM 6.0 2500s.

I had an 04 Silverado, K-3500 SRW, Crew Cab, Long Bed... it was an awesome beast. Averaged 14.9 mpg overall. Put over 200,000 miles on it. Towed the boat like nothing and the loaded 30' bumper hitch triple axle toy hauler with ease.

Sold all the toys, so didn't need the truck. Switched to a 3.7 liter V6 F-150. I like the truck, it feels underpowered, but still scoots pretty well. It tows maybe 6,000 lbs instead of 16,000 LOL. I get a little better mileage. But gas is 40 cents cheaper a gallon. The ride is way nicer. I do miss those heated leather seats though...

Nic Nailed it, solid post.
IMO all of todays new trucks are really nice, but all ridiculously over priced for what you get, maybe even worse than boat pricing in 2005. Soooo Good luck.

No way o could stomach the price of a new truck. They are way over priced. That being said, if you are buy a middle of the road trim, the cost of a 1/2 and a 3/4 ton is very little( >10%). I was shopping the local ford dealer and it was only an $1800 difference between the f150 and f250. I wanted a work truck, so regular cab, lb 4wd, I only wanted pw dl cc tow package and a cloth seat. If I wanted a diesel it was 7k more. No thanks, it would be nice, but I don't need it

All gas Ford trucks prior to 2004.
1987 -325k
1997 -287k
2004 F350 CC 6.0, 63K should of lemoned... spent 2 months in service department.
2006 F350 CC 6.0 227k (not by choice replaced everything, by 105k, bought 7year 200k warranty, paid for its self on 106k. Everything started going again at 200k.)
Spoke with my diesel wrench. I mentioned I'm buying a new truck. Diesel or Gas. PRO WRENCH SAID GAS!!!!!. He said new all new diesels (any brand) will only last 100k before major $$$$$$ is required. EPA has ruin these new Diesels.
If your business was to tow 75-100 yearly then get Diesel. Diesel are not made for daily commute.

2015 F350 CC Lariat 4x4, 12-14 mpg. 103k miles. (standard maintenance KNOCKING ON WOOD)
PS, if it was a company truck and I'm not paying the bill...I'd have a Diesel.
The Gasser has 6 speed, pulls boat like a champ!!!! 80ish 10fwy WB. from Blythe.

My next truck...Gasser again if I'm paying the bill....

If your only driving your current truck 1,000 miles per year as a launch vehicle I would just drive it forever. Spend the extra $$$ on a nicer boat or invest the money for a rainy day!

I had a 07 LBZ. Moved to a Hemi 5.7 for a few months AND HATED IT! It just is not the same. Needless to say I went back to diesel.

One of each. :D "Old" 5.9 Cummins 12 valve 4wd dually to tow anything I can afford to buy.....and an "Old" 02 Suburban with the 5.3. I like both and both are paid for, so the cash goes into maintenance and fluids. Pretty easy for me being I'm simple and dont need anything fancy.

I actually have a similar vehicle situation. Maybe I just need to stop test driving everything and keep my ‘old’ trucks.

2016 Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi. Love it, personal truck truck

2018 ram 2500 Cummins, work truck, love it too but still would buy a gasser if it was on my dime for the truck and fuel

Fuel economy between the two?

Not cruise set on long trip, but everyday full tank usage...

I regret selling my diesel.
Just couldn’t justify it since we sold all of our toys.

But I’m extremely happy with my 2015 Silverado 1500, with zero diesel envy [emoji106]

Here in CA, I pay $400 a year for registration for my Dodge. Insurance isn't that much and I put diesel in the tank once in a blue moon. So I dont really feel the costs of ownership. Kindof rhe same for my Suburban. Knock on wood, even though I'm sure I just screwed myself. :D

Don't really care about mileage because they do what I bought them to do. If I cared about mileage, I would look at a Civic or a Prius.

That’s pretty impressive out of the hemi. What about when they each have 10k behind them?

Those are good numbers for the 6.4 but to tow max isn't the 4.10 required which drives down economy?

The new 7.3 Ford gas engine is going to be a game changer. I expect to see a big surge in popularity and maybe even a bit of a HP war between the Big 3 similar to the diesels of the early 2000's... I think a lot of guys are tired of the extra maintenance and emissions issues of the newer diesels. If I lived in the Midwest or somewhere flat I would probably own a gas truck, but my rig sees lots of grades and elevation so I prefer the Cummins over the Hemi alternative.

I can’t get that in my 5.7 1/2ton.

Barely 17mpg highway at 75-80. And 12mpg around town. 14.5mixed.

I've seen multiple people post some pretty solid mileage with the 6.4, it's got all of the features like cylinder deactivation, etc. I will say, on the diesel front, the Cummins gains 2-3mpg after it breaks in, mine has gone from 12-15 avg in PHX metro driving now that it's got 34k on it.

Is there additional licensing fees on a diesel?
No just weight fees. So a 1 ton gas same as 1 ton diesel. Weight fees are majority of my registration fee for the 1 tons and 3/4. Not sure What the weight fee will be on new half ton.

Your truck thread is what got my wheels turning for a newer truck but for a gas 3/4 ton to try and save a few dollars. I still have young kids so haven’t gotten rid of the toys yet. I’m on the fence but leaning towards keeping both my current trucks.

Towing the cigarette which is about 12.5k I get 10-11.5 depending on grades at 73 mph

Towing a 25ft weekend warrior bumper tow Rv I got 9.8-10.5 from Oregon to Tucson.

The diesel gets 2 mpg better towing.

But remember. The truck costs less, has lesss frequent fuel filter changes and 87 is like 50 cents cheaper.

Also the Hemi is lighter so payload in bed is 3300 lbs va 2500 of the diesel.

Because how is a heavier truck with a larger engine getting better than a smaller truck with a smaller engine?
Seems unlikely.
We don’t know any specs on what his truck is to even try to rationalize that blanketed statement.

The 6,4 can and does often run on 4 cylinder mode.

5.7 Hemi and the 5.7 Hemi with e assist. 395hp 400tq

The electric assist adds x amount of hp/tq on initial throttle.
