I remember before area codes. I could also call long distance without using the area code if it was not out the area code. Obviously the letters had nothing to do with area code, they started the second set of 3 digits. When I was small you had to call the operator to make any kind of long distance call. My home exchange phone book covers two pages in the phone book and I am the last one listed.

Is your last name by chance Zyzzyx?

We had a very small exchange. Back when long distance was a thing we would go a month and never make a local call. Every call was long distance and it would be itemized in the monthly bill.

Sycamore 2- 7635

The phone companies used this system because they didn't think regular folks could remember 7 whole digits.

My grandmother, born in 1902, lived in Los Altos. A then small town outside San Francisco. Her phone number was 3. Just 3.
During the depression they owned the local gas station. That's how they got a phone. She bought her first house for $500 and a cow. LOL

Wow. I was born into rotary but my earliest phone area code was and still is 714. Even when I moved to the 949 I kept 714. What is this kellog you speak of?
Kellog, Union... Etc... It was an easy way to remember the prefix. You needed to pay attention to the capital letters of the word.
For example UNion 7-1967 is 867-1967 my old business line. UNion 7-5309 is Jenny's number 🤣

Funny how a link provided in one thread, sends me down an entirely new path and here I am circling back to this thread. 😁
In the Pilgrim Sailboat thread, 73beast had a link to an old newspaper article in the UCR newspaper archives. That got me curious, so I was looking up some random 1962 - 63 dates from the Tustin News.

Of course the first thing you notice are the ads, like a new Goodyear "Turnpike" rated nylon tire, for $ 9.96. Or brand new "Meredith Village Luxury homes in the North Tustin - Orange areas ( Chapman and Prospect) for $ 33K, 30 year financing @ 5 3/4%. Or 3/4 acre homes on Cowen Heights for $ 43K and 1/2 acre lots for $ 15K.

Anyway, one article was regarding changing to the ANC (All number calling) phone numbers by Nov. 1963, to coincide with the release of the new Orange County phone directory's.

What's really mind boggling is that Pacific Telephone only had 336,000 customers in Orange County in Aug 1962.

Here's the ad for the Meredith Village "All Electric" Homes , which of course today are all pushing $ 1 Mil. But lath and plaster too !!!!!!!!!
