My 9 yr old lab is at the emergency vet. Went from perfectly healthy to very sick in a matter of a few days. Already spent over a grand at our local vet. Now at a specialist as an emergency case.

Started with a "spider bite". Turned into a fever and dog not being able to get up or walk. Ruled out ticks and Lyme disease. Got better with 2 rounds of steroids and antibiotics. Now worse and not eating or active.

Specialist wants $3500 up front to hospitalized dog up to 48hrs with iv fluids, more tests, antibiotics. With no guarantee of outcome. If it's auto immune like 2 of our previous dogs is money wasted down the drain.

My wife also has a horse that is about to be put to sleep too...not helping the situation.

so it makes me the bad guy.

Check your specialists a little. Up here we have several local "specialist vets" and then we have the UC Davis animal hospital. The Davis thing is not that much more money than a normal vet visit but talk about a difference in care.... My cats have each visited once for very specific needs. They commonly do things like animal organ transplants, dog and cat dialysis, cancer treatments, etc. Basically if they reasonably do it for humans, this place does it on animals. You walk in and its more like a hospital than a vet.

And yes, as soon as you spoke a rational word in this situation, you are officially the "bad guy"

Ah the emergency vet, where each conversation ends with “okay now swipe your card...” hopefully your pup gets better soon.

Well he's staying overnight to get iv and see the specialist with some tests. Hopefully they find something and it is easily treatable
Worth every penny. It’s why we work right. He’ll repay you back with one wag of the tail.

Prayers the pup pulls through stronger than ever 👏

Hope your dog gets better. We just went through a lot of Vet visits. Lots of mis-diagnosed issues.

Wouldn’t eat, wouldn’t get up, fever and quick weight loss. After many appointments and ER visits it ended up being severe pancreatitis. It was so bad we had our kids say goodbye to him before his last appointment.

Then the Doc figured it out. It was strictly related to his diet.

He’s now perfect weight and back to being my little shithead. I love him. Rat terrier. Got down to 15 lbs which was terrible. He’s back at 22 lbs which is awesome.

Again,... hope your pup heals up quickly.

This is the main reason I have pet insurance, makes these tough decisions so much easier. Progressive and it pays 80-90% of the bill pretty much every time. It's a no brainer for $50/mo. On my 3rd boxer in 20 years and I'd do it again in a heatbeat.

Hoping the best for your pup. Like stated above, pet insurance is the way to go. Our male has been sick for going on 7 months with a bunch of different issues. He is currently being treated at two specialty vets, as well as our GP. We are at about 35K in treatments so far and we still don't know what is causing some of the issues he has.

Hope he gets diagnosed and treated soon.
My little guy cost me about $6k a couple of years ago. I left a bag of trash next to the back door and he found a rib bone in there. A piece of it broke off and lodged in his esophagus at his stomach so he couldn't eat. They couldn't pull it out in fear it could rip his esophagus so they pushed it into his stomach. The acids in his digestive system broke it down over time to where it passed.
Expensive lesson learned for me...

It’s a tough decision to make. We had to this do less than a month ago. Is it worth to have your buddy poked and prodded, or even cut open with no guarantee of him getting better, then he’s in pain and you feel guilty of making him worse. It’s a sucky situation to be in, prayers being sent to help you make the best decision.

We have 2 UC Davis specialists office near us and they seem not to be on same page with our dog. They however have been more competent as far as checking-in with us.

Sure hope your pup gets better....🤞

$2800 into it and no answers. Could be infection in heart. Could be infection in kidneys. Could be auto immune. Vet wants an additional $1400 to run more tests, ultrasounds and another night in hospital.

I'm gonna have to make the choice and deny treatment and pick him up. It's an endless rabbit hole of money with no answers.

Sorry to hear but this is exactly why with every dog I have they have a money limit. We love them to death but vets know that. They just shot from the hip with no real answers and most will just pay and then get no answers.

my brother paid 3800 for a dog to have surgery “very simple” from the vet. Got a call couple hours later that the dog died. And how he would like to settle the outstanding balance?

Ask to test him for Addison's... I almost lost mine to it. it's rare but you have some symptoms, and it would explain some of it.

That's not a vet, thats a money grab, and a vet that needs a "discussion" out back. Vet here in texas put my dog under for a tooth extraction (two broken off), his other vet in office cleaned his teeth, didn't do the extraction (very obvious why he was there..it was a decent injury).. The MF wanted me to pay for that procedure then to put him back under, and redo it for another $700. Main vet who owned practice called me after I came unglued on that idiot...I didn't pay for either, they made it right then I changed vets. Fuckin douchebags.

I’d try a different vet to get some concrete answers. It’s not fair to the animal to be in pain and miserable and the vet should have their quality of life in mind rather just saying testing all the time. They need to narrow down a diagnosis.

I think some vets will give you strait answers if you ask and can handle the truth, I know my vet does.

There are many though that will deplete your savings and max out your credit cards while offering a false hope for a positive outcome.

For what it’s worth, I have had good luck and experiences with mobile vets that don’t have have offices.
