I bought a 2019 f250 4×4 and put a leveling kit on it with 35" tires. I need to purchase a new drop hitch to tow the boat. What are you guys using these days for this kind of set up? Aluminum or steel?

I use a Weigh Safe hitch. It's aluminium and comes with 2" and 2 5/16" Stainless balls. It is also available with the large shank size too if your receiver is large (I forget dim 2 1/2"?)
Anyway, the reason I like the weigh safe is for the scale built into the hitch that tells you tongue weight. Not very important for boat but very useful for towing car trailer or off road toys where you have control over load position on the trailer.

Good Luck and hope you enjoy the new truck, congrats!

I use the same one... I like it as well.

The one Hula posted. Best price and service I have found is Etrailer.com have bought numerous hitches from them.

I use this one also as I needed a bigger drop then B&W had avaliable. Can't go wrong with either both very well made.

My main ball mount is an Andersen Aluminum "Alumistinger" 4" drop. Never had an issue with it and works well.

Whats the drop on that hitch? I was thinking about getting the B&W but cant decide on the drop. I'd prefer 7" just for flexibility in heights but am concerned that the drop will scrape. I am putting it on a 2500HD Z71, similar to your trucks height I think.

They offer a few variations of drop or raise with the stow and go series.

I have used the Curt 45900 20k lb adjustable steel hitch for about 5 years now. Has 2” and 2 51/6” balls. Great hitch.

This is what I use. My only gripe was it only comes with one bumper plug..... So I bought extra bumpers to eliminate having to move it every time I adjusted the height. Other than that, great hitch

7” is to much for a 2500/3500, 5” is what my dad found worked best.

On a F250/350 the 7” works perfect and is what I went with.

7" Drop. Model # TS20040B. Fits the 2.5" receiver on GM 3/4 tons so you do not need the sleeve.

Same set up and I run a 6” drop, not a $$$$ hitch but ive never seen a solid steel ball mount fail. I have seen an Anderson snap at the ball.

Are you talking about the set screw bolt in the backside to keep it from jiggling? If so, I don’t ever change the height of the balls, I only swap it between sizes.

With the fatigue factor of aluminum, why do people bother with them? Cheaper?

I need a new drop with my taller truck, I like the security factor of the b&w but looks like assholes could pull the pins, then find out they can’t get that part off, but it could still leave you with a worthless hitch. The curt is rated for more weight, 20k#, maybe not as secure, but with that anti rattle set screw in the back, I assume you could crank it down, and without the proper wrench the pins would be under such pressure, they are not comming out, even with the spring clips out, you could still travel, some, and keep an eye on it, or just keep a couple in the glove box for when the enevitable happens and mr shithead try’s to steal it.

I like my Fastway FLASH E Series HD. 8” drop with 1,800lb tongue weight and 18,000lb pull weight ratings. 2” and 2 5/16” balls are stainless.

The Curt is pretty secure. Crank the set screw down with the provided wrench, and it’s not moving. I use the 6” drop on everything I pull. My 2500 has 7.5” lift w/ 35” tires.

Stay away from Trimax Adjustable aluminum locking hitches. The locks are junk. Nothing like not being able to unlock the balls to switch sizes. I just dealt with this today.

I ran a Rapid Hitch for years and liked it. I think they’re called Anderson now.

I also have an Anderson Hitch and Rapid is their hitch model name. Never an issue.

Thanks for the information on here. I just purchased a B&W 7 inch drop. It has a 10,000 lbs rating and great for what I need. Headed to the lake next week for a trial run.

You'll like it. I've been towing 5 different trailers over the last 2 weeks.

Handiest damn thing I've ever bought.

Don’t forget to grease the ball Dave :)

How necessary is this stuff? Do I have to grease my ball regularly? Am I stupid for buying this small container of ball grease for $10 instead of just using leftover axle grease?

Answers are line, in ORANGE.

How necessary is this stuff? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being Not Necessary Ever In Your Lifetime, and 10 being You Need Air To Breathe, this ranks as a 2.

Do I have to grease my ball regularly?

Only when it looks like it needs grease. If chrome starts flaking off your ball you should have greased it 6 months ago.

You appear to have been sucked into a $10 grease purchase by marketing jargon. Any axle or marine grease will work fine.

I use axle grease and keep ball covers on the hitch to prevent dust and dirt contamination.

Don't want to start a new thread and this seems relevant to this convo, what's the best way to lubricate the surge break system? Our trailer is making an insane racket every time we slow down.

From the actuator or the brakes? If brakes, drum or disk?

If brakes, check them, could be worn/dragging.
