Whatever happened to the company that was outfitting Duramax engines for marine use? Colorado maybe? I thought they had a Daytona with a Duramax? Any new info?

GN 145 crcle race boat hasn't been seen in a couple of years. Never real competitive but it always got an 'A' from me just for being different..

Idk what it went in but there was a banks built duramax a few yrs ago I remember reading about also.

I think I remember these boats doing mid 70's at like 2200 to 3200 rpm. Something like that.

The deckboat runs low 70's high 60's.... Pretty cool seeing it take off and blowing some coal. Also it runs a IMCO drive. Pretty bitchen setup though. Sometimes you can see the boat getting worked on off the 57 and chapman in Fullerton. Pretty cool shop also they got a 67 or so chevy truck on the showroom floor with a built dmax as well.

The main hurdle has always been the inherently narrow RPM band of diesel motors compared to gas. Imagine if your boat had a 3000rpm redline...

They can make a Diesel spin 5500 but they get expensive to build.

None of these are Banks.
The blue engines have intercoolers from Banks, but nothing else. A buddy of mine in Ohio has them in a 40 Baja, he built them for a customer in Australia. The other pair are mine and mostly stock. They are in a 40 CC fishing boat that’s about finished being rigged.

He routinely spins 4500.
Has two speed trannies.
This pic came after breaking a driveshaft cruising at 65.

His engines have been fine but he’s breaking a lot of stuff behind them.

Agreed. Need a multi speed transmission to make that work and nobody really wants to do that in the marine world.

If I had 1/2 Kidturbo's patience and a 1/4 of his talent, I'd be a rich man. Crazy how much stuff he's done.

Speaking of diesel motors. This this is pretty bad ass. 1,000HP Diesel. Just need to marinize it. 😁

Before I went to work at JMS Racing, I worked around the corner at Assael BMW. I would frequently drop by JMS after work to BS with Mike and see what was up.

The story goes something like this (it was many moons ago)...

There is a kid in the dyno room working on a Izuzu one day (duramax, for all you GM fans). I'm like, what's going on here???

Apparently the client "boat owner" contracted with Banks to build a diesel for his boat. The kid worked for Gale at the time, and was tasked with making it happen. Well, long story short, it never did. Gale kept pulling the kid off the job.

So the client is now pissed that it's taking so long, and wants his shit done NOW!!! The client tells the kid, "you are coming to work for me now". The kid argues a bit, but the client wins (big money involved) and now has the kid working directly for the client. Somehow the client makes a deal with Mike to let the kid finish the project on Mikes dyno. The kid has fabbed up a custom intake, that the turbo bolts directly to, and all kinna really cool stuff. This kid has Serious skilz, and beings that Mike has a full machine shop, it doesn't take long to get the thing finished.

Once the mechanical is all done, these guys show up from Germany, that don't even speak English. They are packed into the dyno room, wires Everywhere, designing a loom for this one off diesel build. It's using their own computer and components, and they are working around the clock to get it done. I'm just watching shaking my head, and Mike is counting the $$$ from the hours they are using his dyno! lol

They finally get it running and make a few pulls. It was putting out 800ft lb of torque, and they Said that was with no turbo boost (that seemed impossible to me, but whatever).

They played around tuning for another day or so (I heard they quit when it got to 1100ft lb) and packed up to head back to the east coast.

Last I heard they busted up the crank pretty good, and were in the process of designing a new crank from scratch.

As @Racey said, cubic dollars.

Nice find on an old thread!

Diesel is great in a non planing hull. For what we do it’s fucking stupid. Rpm is low and thus it makes it very tricky to get high speeds.

This boat was for sale this summer, They wanted something that could get on plane quicker so they could tow kids on tubes and stuff, I guess that one is nose in the air for quite awhile till it gains some speed. I really love the idea of a diesel boat.

Yours? No shit. I didn't know that. He's putting them through the ringer!
No, I never ran those. Those were on the first Predator for some time. Always had issues even back then.

AHHHHHHHH! That makes sense. 👍

I don't know why he ever got rid of his #6's frankly. He had them on with big power (not Gary but the guy with them now on the Baja)
