Has anyone tried transplanting the EFI from a 1996 - 150 EFI fishing engine to an older, non-efi engine? The engine I want to turn into EFI is a 1989 XR4.

I've got the entire 1996 - 150 EFI but the block has a rod window. Both engines are 150 hp but the XR4 is a 2.4 so might require a different fuel curve.

Any advice before I give this a shot?

Ahh same here.

I would imagine that you would have to change the cowling at least though right? I wouldnt think it would have enough room for the injector/throttle body assembly as well as the ECU and all the other associated parts.

Rebuild the carbs before you start.:D

...or send it to Chuck and Galen.

Your Looney buys you few more welding puddles than it used too...

I now have all the parts and will be doing the swap this weekend. I'll report back on how it goes.

I forgot the XR-4 is a vertical reed engine. My EFI system is for a horizontal reed engine.

:hmm

Little update:

As I understand it, there are no vertical reed EFI Merc outboards. I now have the front half from a 1990 Merc 220 EFI.

More as I get things done....

I'm not going to get the engine back together this year. The project is currently stalled at the lake house, where it's going to sit until spring.

About a month ago, I winterized the lake house. It's not that I couldn't go out there if I had the time, which I don't, but there is no water, the drain traps all have antifreeze in them, and the snow fences are up.

This thread will have to be continued next year.

On the bright side, at least there will be a next year. My parents sold their place and I bought another one. Now, due to an extremely odd turn of events, it looks like I might have a chance to pick up my parent's place too.
