Do the larger boats, of these west coast builders, make good ocean boats? Better yet, whose V's make great ocean going craft and what maximum length is trailerable for each launching? Thanks so much Tom :)

Tom norma says as far as big v bottoms eliminator has the 43 which is the old wellcraft/scarab bottom. The 28+ eagles could handle the blue good also. Hallett 36 and 40 would be fun in the ocean too. I'm talking about big stuff. I've taken my 23 to Catalina a few times. I've seen guys go over in 19 ft jets too. I've seen the channel between long beach and the island look like glass and I've been in 12 ft rollers. Shockwaves 29, Essex 29, Hallett 29 and higher.

May I change that to 41-46? Is that trailerable at places like Huntington and how big a truck ya think?

I know for a fact you can launch the big boys in long beach, I'm sure Huntington would be fine also (someone here will know) as far as the truck, I think a 3/4 ton dura max type on the absolute small side could work but a real hauler would be ideal. Check out the TKO boat/boats, no joke stuff.

I'm gonna go with these... For west coast offshore...

I have driven the Lavey 39 and the Cobra 32, both run great to Catalina. I will add, schiada, nordic, eliminator and DCB to name a few west coast builders that I think are ocean worthy that come to mind first.

With twins? Eliminator, Nordic, Cig, Fountain, OL, Donzi, Formula, Ricky's Schiada 32 for sale. etc.. etc...

Idk about the trailer/launching question.

If you're possibly looking for a used Elim? I love this used 38 on CL w/stock 525s.

These all are good options, however I thought we were talking about west coast builders.

There is an awesome 38 cig for sale right now that most of us should be familiar with! Talk about a good boat for the money! Just sayin

Not enough free board on that OL29 to keep the pedigree imo. Not built for big water. Again my opinion.

U can get laveys 39 evo for damn near free it's got 700's with NXT's. It's had issues that some money can fix I believe. The 2750, 2950, and 3250 nueras are the perfect dual water boats. Fast bottoms and cut through snot like hot knives through butter.

That big ass Schiada lee has is pretty cool, I'd go more massive cruiser with a head and sofa and bed than some raced out deal. Nice to be able to get comfortable on a boat when you get where your going.

I don't see a lot of west coast boats out there but I know there are several that should be able to without a problem. I know the old F1-11 P5 Lavey used to run hard. There is a big ass Shiada that doe the ski race as well as Herbst's Hallets.

I think the biggest difference between west coast custom boats and east coast off shore boats is the layup. West coast boats tend to have lighter layups to go faster while east coast ten to be heavier and cut through waves better. My Cigarette felt like it was made of concrete and would crush waves like they were butter.

No mater what the brand, I think 35' to 38' is the ideal size. Easy to tow, launch, dock, etc but big enough to smooth out all but storm water. My buddy had a 47' Fountain and that thing was a monster. I towed it a couple times and it was a pain, especially when trying to get into a gas station to fuel up. It was also a pain to dock and the bow was like a sail.

My next boat will be a 35' to 38' boat and will be an east coast boat because most of my boating in the ocean. That and I picked up a little 19' Dimarco jet boat for the lakes and river. :D:thumbup:

Not sure I'd want a 40+ cat on the west coast ocean. The water is to big and rolly imo. On the intercostal or the keys shallow water all day long. Burying the beak on a cat in 14 ft rollers less than 10 seconds apart would make me very nervous!

For Offshore you gotta go East Coast. Ciggy, Pantera, Apache, Chief, Fountain, etc

Tom,

I agree with Dylan about the 43 Schiada. That boat is epic. It will handle any water. The cabin is finished like a Prevost coach, and a 6'4 guy can stand up in there. I bet you could make a phone call and get a demo ride to Catalina.

Here is a pic tied up with my 32 last year at DS. Makes mine look like a dingy.

Twin 502 ' s and bravos and 38 ft. What do you think that boat will do? Mid 70's?

I think low 70's. That's a nice clean boat and I like Scarabs but I think the price is a tad high to be a great deal. Doesn't say what year it is but it is low hours on motors. I'd like that boat with 525EFI's and XR drives. 700s/NXTs would be kick ass!

Geez Aaron, that's beautiful. :)

There are a lot of Fountains, Cigs, Outerlimits, "East Coast" boats on the water, and they are nice. You won't run into anyone that has another 43 Schiada.

That's because they are too nice to put in salt water ! Lol

I think it spends most of its life in salt. There are only two built. The one in the vid, and the silver one they are building now, which is going somewhere in the Middle East, Dubai or UAE or something.

If you join SCOPE, you will be the only one in the club with one, because there is only one on the west coast. Probably don't have to worry about someone copying your paint for awhile;)

Nordic makes a 47 Enforcer that they pull Todd Haig to Catalina and back for the win most years.

Eliminators 38, and 34 are pretty good ocean boats, for something a little smaller..:cool

Just an opinion but a 38 foot standard lay up boat with Bravo's running in west coast rollers and swells is just asking for a ride along mechanic or a sea-tow card.

You would have to be awful easy on that boat to keep the drives together.
