This Sunday in Marina Del Rey there will be a gathering of old Land Rover and first gen. (classic) Range Rovers. All are invited - Land Rover or no Land Rover.

Its FREE!!!

It will be at The Motoring Club - Club House in MDR starting at 9am.

This year's iteration should be another fun way to spend a Sunday morning. We'll show Camel Trophy films, Land Rover corporate will bring a TReK Discovery II from their heritage division, and there's talk that Bonhams will have the customized Meyers Manx that Steve McQueen drove in "The Thomas Crown Affair" on display.

We will be there with our Range Rover - hope to see a few RDP folks there as well.

Check out this link for more info.

The Defenders are just plain bad ass. Hold their value incredibly well.

The weather looks perfect Sunday. I think we'll head over the hill in the VW to check it out.

Thats a great drive from the valley - When I lived in MDR years ago I worked in the valley and would take Topanga every day instead of the 405. That route is more of a Porsche drive then a VW drive;)

Great topdown cruise either way! Hope to see you there!

I told my son when he was in high school I'd buy him a car and tried to get him to want a used Defender - at that time nice ones were 20k - I told him they were going up in value and he could trade it for any car he wanted later on after college.

Skip ahead - he's a senior in collage still driving his depreciating asset worth about 7-10k and those Defenders are 70-80+ plus for a nice one.

He learned his first lesson in depreciating assets!

If I was closer and less busy, I'd be there. LOL

Love to find a Defender pickup. a 130... slow, loud, but so cool.

If it’s there - I’ll get pics for sure. Then you can tell us what has changed since it was used in the movie!

Last year there were a couple of those that showed up - one was OVER the top with quilted interior etc - if any show up this year I’ll get some pics.

Here is a link to pics from last year - the event was held at Paramount Ranch a week or so before it burned down in the fires last year https://www.transterras.com/new-gallery/3gpibbgssolpxjwkc8e4zidr3b2j8r

A couple of the one I’m talking about...

..In truth when I was around the car it was after Steve McQueen had sold it to Jack Leitzki... Jack was a guy who rented vintage buses to the movie industry and was friends with Steve McQueen...Steve sold him the Manx..,which was pretty faded by that point...Somewhat later Jack sold it to a friend of mine...Scary Gary Crawford...I remember sitting in a bar with Scary Gary or sitting somewhere I don’t really remember... thinking about what color would be best for resale... we came up with white...Well Gary had paid somewhere between 200 and 600 for it...painted it..put it in the Recycler and maybe sold it for 1000...
... I could be wrong about these numbers it was a long time ago like the mid 70s???...
...It will be real interesting to hear what Bonahms might have to say as to the linear history of the car if they say anything???...
... If we only would’ve known where this all was going to go???...
(The max came with documentation proving that it had been Steve McQueens)...

Defenders are popular here. Canada has a rule you can import non conforming cars 15 years or older. The USA has the same rule, but its after 25 years. Newer Defenders here are sort of cheap, the 25 year or older ones are about the same. Because they can be imported to the states.

A few for sale here on Craigslist: https://vancouver.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=land+rover+defender

A few more - the indoor shots are inside “The Motoring Club”. A great club house for car people to store their cars or hang out.

Neat place...

...Oh well???...I’m tempted to go over to Leitzke’s studio rentals (about a mile and a half from me) and ask Jack’s son if he remembers the Manx... He probably would have been 16 or 17 years old at the time???... I am not even sure that Jack’s son took over the business... and I haven’t talked to the son since 1982 when we were working on the same movie for TV...

I asked the event organizer about it - he said it’s been put back to the movie spec. for the sale. He really didn’t know much about or have any more info - they should have pictures on the Bonhams auction site and a full history around Feb ? The sale will be in March I think.

On another note - if you find yourself in Venice on the corner of Lincoln and Venice blvd. stop in this place if you want to see custom bikes and cool stuff ...

Deus ex Machina - coffee and very cool art / clothes / motorcycles and nic nacs that everybody on this site would like to have !

It was just a couple blocks from the Rover event so we stopped in a for a coffee.

Gary ran the parts dept. at Chick Iverson Porsche Audi VW in Newport Beach back when I was the lot boy there - when he left there he started Parts Obsolete in what is now the Period Corrct building in Costa Mesa.
