Need some help. I bought a 2015 dually private party this year and paid to renew my registration this month. I received a letter from the CA DMV that I haven’t paid the gross vehicle weight declaration fee which is a federal fee from the IRS for combined vehicles capable of towing over 55,000 lbs... obviously my truck can’t do that BUT it did have a section saying IRS form 2290 needs to be filled out for vehicles over 8,000lbs (I’m at 8,400).
has anyone else dealt with this on their pickup?
MORE TAXES! Ugh.

I think they are trying to get you to pay for these

If that's the case tell the DMV the truck is for personal use not for hire.

I have never heard of this.. but if it's true it sounds like I'll be going back to F150 territory.. (Federal Fee's? WTF?)

All CA trucks are reg commercial. But it should be private. Take the spare off and the inner wheels. Hit a weigh station on empty and get under that 8k weight limit.

2015 3500, 4500, 5500 Dually?
was the previous owner a hot shot (car delivery service) who had the weight limit increased to be under weight limit?

The fees that Californians pay for vehicle registration are unbelievable.

Registering a truck in Texas with a GVW between 10,001 and 18,000 lbs costs $110.00, plus an $11.50 fee in Collin County and a $15.00 bridge and roads fee. County fees vary, but they're all $11.50 or less.

My 3500 was over 8001 lbs and I didn't have to do any of that

I happen to have mine sitting on my desk. Gotta love the fees.

As I said above, in Texas, the fees to register a non-commercial truck with a GVW between 10,001-18,000 lbs total $136.50.

What type of vehicle do you have? The cost on the invoice you posted is 192% more than the cost to register the above vehicle in my county.

I need to do that also, Nevada is super high as well. If i register my vehicles on my family's farm in Fayette county it is almost nothing. Texas has better looking license plates to.

It’s a 3500 and no he wasn’t a hot shot. Private guy who would take it back and forth to bullhead from so cal.

The owner responsibility fee is $0? :)
I noticed that right now but I already submitted taxes. Guess I got to go back and resubmit the 2290 form. In the mean time I’m going to try and argue it at the dmv level first.

You only need to pay the 2290 if you declare a weight over 55,000. half my trucks are registered for 54,000 and I do not pay the tax. You are using the wrong people to do your paperwork. call me if you have any questions 909-285-7486
Right on. I was just surprised I was sent it in the first place. It’s just a ram 3500 with a stock bed. I’m hoping there’s some confusion.

I’ve argued twice to make this “commercial vehicle” (van) a historical plated veh.
DMV says nope both times.
$119 a year for a 67’ mini😡. Damn thing doesn’t weigh enough , let alone get driven over 50 miles a year, to tear up any roads, lol.

Got mine today. 11 year old 1/2 ton truck with 140,000 miles on it.

Coupled with the kids cars, the sports car and the comuters, we’re paying better that $2500/year in California vehicle registration fees. I'm so ready for a change.

It’s actually different. It’s a tax from federal govt and not the state weight tax.

Found this form today I am guessing I’ll fill it out and try and submit it to dmv.The fee is free but it’s the headache of going to the dmv. Hopefully none of the other guys on here start getting these.

sure it’s diff but why are you having to pay it and myself and others don’t? Is the weight rating of your truck reported properly or did someone monkey with the number so they can haul heavy?

I’m not sure I wish I knew! I really don’t think it was ever heavy hauled. I will get to the dmv Thursday and get an answer.

If you have a camper shell you can register it non commercial. A new dodge I bought years ago was accidentally registered as non commercial by the dealer and a Fkn CHP pulled me over because of my License Plate and told me that. So I had to go get it weighed and pay the fee’s

not that easy anymore in CA. looked into it last year, you have to have to be self contained.
it used to be shell only, but the state removed that loophole in 17

nope you need a camper with a potty and if you get caught driving without it the penalties are insane.

If you put personalized plates on it they can't tell without stopping you.

I did it in '19 with my F350 superduty. I went to AAA they confirmed it had a shell I surrendered my plates and they gave me new ones, reg went from just over 300 a year to 130 a year.

Sounds like someone screwed up your paperwork. It happens... I got a CDL by mistake instead of the motorcycle license I applied for. I would be making phone calls to numbers on those papers.

Here is one that throws me for a loop...

2019 1/2 ton silverado, California registration is only $575 and AZ is $705. However, me at 35 years old with a clean record I am paying $1100 a year for full coverage with 100/300 liability, but if I moved the truck to California my insurance jumps to $1975.

I had an AZ license and insurance for a while but CA registration on a Hyundai Sonata about 8 years ago. Never went AZ registration because CA was cheaper. Never understood that.

Same as my 17 F350 DRW
I do pay an increased weight fee, since my perm plated ToyHauler weight needs to be added to truck weight, but easy process

Explain this further. My toy hauler registration was $800. 🤬

My ToyHauler is not considered 100% self contained by the state of CA, since it had no refrig or stove/oven.
Both of those items are removable and where not in the trailer at inspection time. Since no stove and refrig in trailer, CA considered it a race trailer and it was issued prem plates.

To be 100% legal, I have weight code E (35k) stickers in the truck if I ever get pulled over, plus my non-commercial class A DL. Trailer capacity is 19.5k when axle weight stamps are looked at, even though trailer was stamped at 9995lbs by MFG. Cost for the weight sticker is an additional $800 a year. I could avoid all this, but then insurance could clip me if I ever end up in an accident, so it was done right to start. Plus my trailer is a business asset (mobile decorating unit for kids parties) for my wife’s bakery, which helps as well :)

Truck with Camper shell must be certified as "For Human Habitation"

Rather ambiguous requirements, I'm guessing it May depend on the mood (or knowledge) of your DMV representative

Incredible.

Half ton trucks are $76 in Texas.

I visited a buddy in San Antonio a couple years ago. Really liked New Braunfels. I've considered moving but my family and my girlfriend's family are all in So Cal

Although saving $576 on registration, cheaper gas and cheaper overall cost of living is tempting.
