My wife and I are looking into heading to the keys next week and I was wondering what you guys recommend for places to stay, see, do etc. prefer water front, beach access, views etc. doesn't have to be super fancy just good clean accommodations.... TIA

Just VRBO it. Very easy and they have endless little bungalow placed that are usually 1 bed, 1 bath, kitchen, etc. and many have Jacuzzi's that can be had as little as $150 a night. Stay close to the west end of duvall St. so you can walk the bars like Hogs Breath, SLoppy Joes, Irish Kevins, Tree bar, Naked Bar, Etc. Go get some Stone crab from Half Shell Raw Bar. Oh, and if you want a good time, go to the drag show at the 801 Burboun bar on Duvall. It's actually pretty fun.

If you're flying right into Key West, you wont need a car. Just taxi it from the Airport, Most things are walking distance, they have pedi cabs (bicycle cabs) as well.

Enjoy man. My favorite place.

I just realized you wrote keys in general, not key west.
Yes, as Catman said, Key Largo and Islamorada are also very cool places. Very laid back and chill. But Key West is the party spot and a shit ton to do and see.

It all matters what you like to do ?? If drinking is you're thing Key West is the place.Nonstop party and a lot to see.My favorite place to stay there is https://www.pierhouse.com/suites.Check out the dockside suite !!!!!! It has a infinity baloney over the water. If you are driving down rent a scooter or a golf cart.Parking is a pain in the ass !!!!! Key West is kinda Las Vegas, after a couple days of drinking and parting it's time to move on.We do the worlds there in Nov. for 5 days and i have to stop in Islamorada to chill for a couple days before flying home ...
My top pick if you want to kick back, rent a boat, eat and drink is Islamorada !!!!!! check out this place http://www.oceanhousefloridakeys.com There is only 8 rooms and no kids under 16.The grounds are unbelievable !!!!!
The service is top notch and if you need anything they are there and if you don't they are unseen. With only 8 suites sometimes you don't even see another guest. This place is the best kept secret in the keys.Go on: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_R...an_House-Islamorada_Florida_Keys_Florida.html and read the reviews. You will only find good ones.
Also when driving around the keys you have to stop at https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaur...me_Pub-Big_Pine_Key_Florida_Keys_Florida.html This place has great food and it use to be a whore house..Must see

I hope soon we will be living 6 months in Key Largo or Islamorada. There is so much boating that can be done with great weather in the winter.Still have to do my other 6 months in Parker,AZ because i love working in this 120* heat!!!!1

Have fun down in the keys... You will be back for sure..

Post Card Inn.

Ocean front tiki bar, take a ride out to the famous sandbar and party, nice "beach", nice grounds. In the heart of Islamorada.

This was last month.

Rent scooters in Key West. You can get em for the whole week at a great price.

We rented little speedboats and took a tour. Rough ride, but hella fun zipping through the mangroves. Sunset Water Sports.

Snorkel trip out to the old lighthouse.

There's tons of great bars to check out as well. Duh.

AWESOME info. guys, thank you for the suggestions. We will start searching all this up and see what we can put together. I hope our short time frame isn't a real problem just a potential one.

We just got back. We stayed at the Marquesa. Very nice hotel. Good location, easy walk to Duval and all of the popular must see bars.

We've never been to the keys before, but she booked us a few nights here in August for our honeymoon. https://www.galleonresort.com/ She liked the beach and the close proximity to everything.
After that we are heading to hawks cay resort for a concert and then a few other places

That's a solid plan right there. Galleon is a really cool spot on the water and super close to the marina and to Duval. Hawks Cay Resort is super nice and way chill. You guys aren't gonna want to come back (except that it's august and gonna be humid as FUCK!) Have a great time, snap some pics!

Everywhere else she wants to go requires a vaccine, and I'd rather give my money to Florida than to Hawaii. We're also going to Nassau, as we have "free" nights at the Atlantis, I'm not thrilled about taking my first covid test.

Here's that concert series they do at hawks cay. https://www.hawkscay.com/keys-to-country-music-series

That's bad ass! Didn't know they did concerts there. That'll be a lot of fun.

Nassau is cool. Atlantis reminded me of a vegas casino / resort. We actually liked going into town. Along Bay St. are shops (some super high end shops too like Rolex, Cartier, Etc.) and the straw market is there too. Cool little open market place. Couple blocks over from straw market is a place called pirate of nassau. Kind've touristy but we enjoyed it and the food in the bar there was killer.

I agree about going to Florida over Hawaii. I was actually just looking at booking us some flights to be at our place in Kona for Christmas. First, wouldn't be looking forward to the stupid tests, second, they're still a little mask crazy and third, there are ZERO rental cars. So, no go anyway. But we'll be in Key West in November for the worlds / poker run and can't wait.

Like I said, take some pics and enjoy!!

My wife and I are seasoned Maui visitors, been going regularly for years. Since Covid hit, it's just not worth the price/hassle to us anymore. We've been going to Florida now. So much cheaper in the past 18 months or so. We did Orlando and the amusement parks last August, it was a ghost town. We walked up to every ride we wanted and got on. I took a ton of pictures of Disney and Universal parks without a single human in sight!

We will be taking our first trip to Key Largo and Key West in late September, so thanks for the tips guys, I'm taking notes. Then headed back to Orlando in early December for more amusement parks. I can't believe the deals I'm finding if you book well in advance. I'm finding flights from the west coast to FL are cheaper than historically, while the flights to Maui aren't cheap. Same goes for lodging.

Bummer, you're just going to miss it. world races and poker run is Wed 11/10 - Sun 11/14.

Family has owned on the big island since the 60's. I grew up spending summers there as a kid. As I grew older I'd go once or twice a year with my own family. We've been doing Key West (worlds) since early 2000's. I've said for YEARS, even with owning a place in hawaii, going to Florida for same amount of time is usually at minimum 3/4 to 1/2 the cost of Hawaii trips! Even with renting a house or hotel in KW. Flights are double, car rental is out of control and basic food and gas etc is more. So, we find ourselves going to Florida more than Hawaii now-a-days.

Pro tip:

Florida is a winter time destination.

Unless you happen to love extreme heat and humidity you can smell and taste, then by all means, go in the summer!

That is all. 😊

P.S. The drive to Key West from the main land is amazing.

Well that sucks. Oh well, I'm sure we will find plenty to do. Rent a boat, drink, explore drink.
Hell, maybe AJ will come down and join us for a bit. Hint, hint. :D

We stayed at The Reach Hilton while in KW. White sand beach, walking distance everywhere...shrimp and grits for breakfast every morning. 👍 🍤

I am surprised at the cost of hotels this year in key west, they all seem to have gone up quite a bit. guess they are trying to make up for lost revenue last year, and not just poker run week

We (well Taylor actually) SCORED our rooms at La Concha for race / poker run week. $1,250 for Wed - Mon! But we booked in Jan during the scamdemic.

We got 6 nights at the Hilton Garden Inn Key West for late sept/oct '21 and paid $950, but like Tank did we booked way early during the scamdemic and it was so cheap. Airfare was too from Portland to Fort Lauderdale for $331 RT for both my wife and I! Also got a convertible rental car for 10 nights for $462. I cashed in Holiday Inn points for 4 nights in Key Largo also. We're $1750 into a 10 night trip, Maui was 2.5X that much.

I figure with these savings, I can afford to put gas in my boat now under the Biden regime.

Thats not so bad, i just looked up Hyatt centric and basic rooms at going for $969 night on an off weekend. Thats more than i use to spend on the end suite for the poker run.
i need to try the galleon next year

Will splash the old Baker tunnel hull today. BTW, excellent new steakhouse on Cudjoe Key called "Broil", beer and wine only but good selections of wine. My steak was very good but Dyanne's scallops were off the chart. Best I've ever tasted and after 30 years in San Diego I've tried a lot of scallops! We are here 3 weeks and will be going back to the Broil several times. Great atmosphere and service topped it off. They have only been open for 4 months so it was not here last time we were in the Keys. Top Tip!!!

BTW, those photos of our camp are site #7 at Bluewater Key RV Resort. You can see more at their website. Nice campsites and very private and gated, and very close to Key West, but disappointed there is no bar/restaurant on site. Private dock at the campsite makes up for it though. Stocked the bar under the palapa so all good! Nice stars last night, no signs of the hurricane that passed by a few days ago. Ok, enough of the thread hijack. Oh BTW, skinny water is the only access in and out of here. Not suitable for anything needing more than about 18" of water.
