So I got this small leak now from what looks like an overflow tube of some sort. Looks like gear oil to me. The tube is at the top of the axle just to the left of the rear diff. It runs up and is clipped to the beam of the frame. I thought it was my rear brakes at first. Any ideas??

Sounds like it might be a vent hose. A lot of axles have a hose that vents the differential.
Does it have a plastic fitting on the end at the frame? The fitting allows air out, and keeps dirt and water from going in.
Where is the leak....close to the axle or on the other (upper) end of the hose?
If it is at the axle, you might be able to cut a little bit of it off, and re-attach it with a new clamp.
Hope this helps.

OK did some looking....Ford has a vent fitting on the axle and it ALSO has brake lines connected to it!?! So where is the leak....small brake lines or the bigger vent hose (tube)

It looks similar to that pic....but I don't see that other thing coming off the back. If you are looking from the back at the diff cover...just to the left at the top of the axle..there is a hose...looks like 3/8" it goes up toward the left and is mounted to a clip that is on the inside beam of the frame just in front of the rear wheel. So its leaking down the beam near the inside of the wheel..which is why I thought it was brake fluid at first.

the vent hoses like to crack at the fitting. you cut off a inch or so and reinstall.

If I haven't made this clear already.......it's leaking from the END of the hose........thus, I'm assuming it's venting...but why?....

Haven't changed or touched anything. Truck sat all weekend. Only rolled it downed the driveway this morning so my son could get his car out from behind it this morning. Noticed the leak later in the afternoon when I went to go fill up for work.

Time to change the diff fluid. I recently had ours changed on our 04' F350 but only for preventive measures, i did the brake fluid and serviced the whole trans too...115,000 miles on those fluids.

How many miles on your truck?

I bought it from Dmunkie a few years ago. I've put maybe 40-50K on it. Can't remember without looking. Not sure what he did to it before. So I should just get the diff fluid changed to be on the safe side? Just wanna make sure it's gonna be OK to drive in the meantime.
