Curious what you guys use while riding....I had a Lowrance unit in my off road car, but I'd like to find something with more detail for forest trails....

I switched from Lowrance to Garmin years ago. Impossible to beat the resolution of the 24,000:1 topo data.

I have an older 376C on the bike that is sought after big time because it isn't touch screen (sucks in the dust) and is waterproof. Look for one used.

Ya want fine resolution, the biggest screen possible and it should reasonably tell what you're looking at, and a marker of some sort to guide you to way points.

My Lowrance has none of this:

I also use the Garmin 60csx for riding or hiking. Its easy to use and comes with decent software to upload/download data to a computer. If you're looking for something to use in a SxS, Ive been pretty happy using a tablet with the Backcountry Navigator in our Razor.

Does the tablet need to have cell service in order to work correctly? I like the tablet idea. The areas I'd be using it would be up in the mountains where cell service is next to zero.

Most newer tablets and phones can receive gps signals without cell or wifi service. I use a Nexus 7 tablet in a rubber gumdrop case to protect it from the elements.

For a tablet/phone, just make sure you download the maps while your on wifi/cellular.

iPads have to be 3G/4G capable. The wifi-only iPads don't have GPS.

We're using Gaia GPS on our iPhones/iPads. Great reviews, but I'm not on the smart side of the learning curve with it quite yet.

We like the Lowrance, because you can install these brackets on your truck (if you happen to have a Ford Raptor:cool). If your really intrested in them, we can try to custom make a set for your truck.
