Too bad they didn't moderate Beth and Steve off the boards. That's the main reason I quit posting there. I couldn't stand to listen to them any longer.

👎

Those two are two of my least favorite humans as well.

They refuse(d) to ban problem members but they had no problem deleting posts just because.

Legally? What legalities are there related to backups of an internet forum as you don't really have "personal" data. Or is it required if you sell the email addresses?

If your "backup" is bad.. you are SOL. The government is not going to come after you after a total data loss.

Just like it is not illegal to run a business poorly, it is not illegal to run IT poorly.

Im not an IT guy but I will ask ours.. when we set up our backups we had to do something to be in compliance.. for some reason I think we had to have at least 30 days of the site backed up?

I didn’t think much of it at the time but assumed it was in case someone plotted some terrorist deal the government could come in and see what was said or something? I dunno

Haha.
I quit hanging there after all the experts showed up and you were wrong about everything. I sold a car and it was sold again. The second buyer went on there and asked a few questions, I answered them and was told I was a wrong from the peanut gallery over there. After I said it was my old car and I knew it inside and out they still said I was wrong. The second owner is now a good duning buddy. We get a good laugh about it.

One of the things I have learned over the last 22 years of being on and running forums..

It really only takes a couple people to fuck them all up. You put one of those people in charge of shit and they can ruin your whole program on the quick..

It sounds like gd is run way different than this place, but they were successful over the years so they have to do something right..

It will be interesting to see if they recover from this or not.

I'm sure they didn't but they are attempting to maintain their "G" rating still. They even kept the swear filters.

There were many mods playing favorites all the time.....what do you expect from a forum who had moderators that were cheating on their spouses with other forum members making decisions? lol too funny the memories of that place. dont miss it at all....

I wouldn't call it successful Dave, it never made the owner much money, if any at all. And for some dumb reason he likes it that way.

Such a missed opportunity, IMO.

Monetizing forums is a lot trickier than people think, especially if you are small and privately owned..

I remember being on an airplane and reading this magazine about online forums.. They were referring to them as “verticals” in the article.. I was thinking wtf is a vertical?

Throughout the article I was reading two things became abundantly clear.. 1. These forums at the time and how to monetize them was pretty much uncharted territory.. The second thing that became clear was I was on the very leading edge of that, because I knew more about it through dumb luck and experience than the guy that wrote the article..

If you look around now, all of the big forums are dormant or gone.. Everyone went to fb and other platforms.. a big part of the reason for that was the mistakes almost all of them made trying to monetize. Another reason is the ability to easily share video (more modern now than back then)

RDP is literally one of the only forums left thst continues to not only be active but grow month to month and year to year..

You don’t see any ads in the middle of this post or thread though either.. ;)

That was the guy who admin'ed the site, not the owner, and they were weirdly specific dating sites not porn. 🤣

Yea, for wealthy guys only if they needed a dinner date for a meeting.

Aaron is killing it. He had to restart his business over again and is doing very very well.

Name sounds familiar. Just remember seeing his cars. Sucks to hear that he had build his business back.

Yeah no...

You're thinking about Craig, dirtywhiteboy. He runs a dating service for people making 6 figures and up.

Patrick was running a couple of now defunct dating sites. I think they were called midnightbootycall or some shit like that. They did very well for awhile! 👍

Met craig a few times at glamis always a cool guy. Same with Aaron met him about 10-11 years ago or like 30 cars ago lol. Got a ride in one of his twin turbo racers only about 1500 hp at the time and damn it was fast.

I don’t see how Aaron has time for much guys always busy with business kids baseball low riders and glamis.

Craig is one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to know. I tried to get him to come to the river multiple times. He said he went once, and it just wasn't his thing.

Aaron is out every big weekend, with only one goal, be fastest at the drags. Hes pushing 2500 hp now, launch control, variable boost control, fuel tank and lead in the front of the car, etc., etc.. He has a bigger Renegade hauler and bigger stacker now, gotta be 85-90 feet easy. Pad 3 on major weekends.

Him and Pont have an ongoing battle on who is fastest and who can spend the most money. Fun to watch, but if you are not out in the dunes going left and right you are missing half the fun of glamis.
Yeh I prefer to dune. But crazy the speeds they are gettin. When I got a ride in the racer it was 125 mph now they are in the 150s
