Thinking of making a first trip to Glamis.

Is there a nice place to camp that is suitable for a Class A RV without going off road? I read about Gecko Rd but hear it gets really crowded and crazy. Looking for a lower key spot to camp. Some of the riders coming along are not that experienced.

I wouldn't say gecko is near as crazy as the vendor flats or the washes that's for sure.

gecko/roadrunner are the only paved areas of glamis to camp. so obviously they are crowded and yes, at times, can be crazy. there are "pads" to camp off of geck0 road that are dirt but do not require extensive travel to get to, just pull right in. keyhole campground is nice between gecko loop and roadrunner.

if you are so concerened about "offroading" your RV, stay away from the washes as that is a dirt road you travel down to a dirt camping spot and can get very dusty especially if the wind cranks up.

Do not go on a holiday weekend and you can find a nice spot off gecko. Two weeks before thanksgiving until after new years gecko will be full. After that it opens up until the next holiday.

There is cement flats by the ranger station. Its off road but hard packed. Its a crap shoot if you find a spot along gecko during the season. We usually camp down by the aqueduct, kind of an ordeal to air down the truck and trailer but once you are down there, their inst much traffic.

Park the RV and scout by car or truck. If it says no parking they mean it. If it says no parking within "xx" feet of the roadway, they mean it. Crazy is all relative. A sunrise blast down the river at 100mph is crazy for some. Bonfires and beers is crazy for others. If you mean crazy like assholes flying through your campsite at speed at all hours of the day... that sort of crazy can be tough to avoid on the big weekends at Glamis. An RV with hydraulic levelers is pretty easy to get unstuck if you've got some plywood and a shovel. Been there done that quite a few times. We usually drive oir A until we start to get stuck then call it good... aka our campsite.

Thanks guys!

I have a class DP and been to Dumont a number of times. Just nervous about a new place.

We are heading out the weekend of 11/15. Think it will be crowded then?

As for crazy, I was more specifically concern with out of control zombie type behavior! lol. Looking for a more mellow family oriented place to hang out. We will do our fair share of beer consumption and evening wood burnin but just on the mellow side.

When are you going?
As long as its not a holiday, then Gecko Road From Pad 1 to Roadrunner should be fine.
For the last few years the BLM have been Jack-booted Nazis, citing and harassing everyone.
Being a newbie makes no difference. Make sure you have registrations and green stickers for everything. Helmets, whips, no double riders, etc.
Don't start a fire with gas, no fireworks, no glass drinking containers allowed except in your rig, and the list goes on. They will sit a few hundred feet away at night and watch you with night vision goggles and wait for any sign of a possible infraction, then come in hot with a dozen vehicles filled with dicks who will threaten, insinuate, intimidate, and accuse you of being anything but right.
Have a good time

You should definitely try out glamis. It's awesome and I absolutely love the riding there. The guy above is right about what he's saying. Sounds like with a big RV and keeping it mellow you will perfectly fine, just make use everything is registered they will tow your stuff and take it to el centro, I learned the hard way. It's a blast though but really don't bring bottles or wood pallets, these bastards are money hungry son of a bitches.

Gecko IS a zoo. And it's where all the rangers hang out, since the ranger station is at the beginning of Gecko. :rolleyes

A few years back they graded the road that runs along the washes (rail road tracks). You can easily get a MH out to wash 25 now. Head out as far as you can. Why? The lower washes (to 11 at least) are a fucking dust bowl at the end of the day. Once you get past 11 or so, the dust factor goes away.

At about wash 18 or so, the road gets windy. So your best bet is to camp around 15ish where the crowd gets kinna thin.

Avoid the holiday weekends at all costs if your new at this. Do not have a glass bottle of ANYTHING outside your RV, and do not leave ANY trash laying around.

Do enjoy the peaceful nights, the trains going by, and as big a campfire as you want!!! Fresh wood only. Don't take anything with nails.

Attach a tall unique flag to your RV, so you can spot it from far away.

And dont be hauling ass around the areas where people camp. Kiddie tracks, and old camp fires with nails in em will greet you quick if you do.

Dumont sucks for beginners. It is VERY dangerous there!!!

Have a great time in Glamis.

11/15 wont be too bad.
There will be a bunch of empty rigs holding spaces on Gecko, but you should be able to find a spot and it wont be too big of a zoo.
Lots of folks drop off their rigs on Veterans day weekend and leave them there until the end of Thanksgiving weekend.
It may look crowded, but the camps are mostly empty
