Going stepless

Thinking about going step-less, putting ladders on old man guides, thoughts /mounting suggestions?

There are stepless fenders on our 19' Daytona trailer. It works because that hull is SO low as designed. But for the other boats that have a taller freeboard, I think you're just going to be annoyed and frustrated by not having them. I'd say put them on and either some traction pads or the billet/rubber step plates that some shops use.

That thing looks to have a lil more freeboard than mine.....steps wouldn't help my short ass anyways. I say roll with it.

So this is what I ended up doing, ladder on guide bars and no steps. I think it looks clean. A bit more to do then blast and paint.

cut some flat stock 3/8" or 1/2" thick on an angle 2" x 4" and weld gussets under those ladder steps. In time, they're gonna bend.

I did similar with my trailer when I switched it to triples. Only put a little tiny pad to hold the fenders.I didnt want big steps and people crawling over the sides of the boat... go to the back and use the ladder, etc. However... it just makes everyone use the fenders as steps. Just wait... you'll be yelling at everyone in no time...

Climbing a ladder is pain in the ass. Climbing a ladder that's tilted the wrong way is a bigger pain in the ass. Climbing a ladder that's tilted the wrong way when it's 115° is an even bigger pain in the ass. You'll be using the fenders as steps after the first day.

Put steps on the fender brackets.

I think I’d ditch the bars holding the fenders and hold them behind it for a “floating fender” look like they used to do in the 70’s-80’s

Put steps on the fender brackets.

It will have a grab handle over the vent so you will have a third point of contact.

My 2 suggestions for it would be to gusset the steps like mentioned earlier, and make the entire assembly removable/adjustable. Also, just keep in mind that you are now making the passengers climb onto the rear hatch and seat every time they get into or out of the boat on the trailer. If they were stepping on the fender they could more likely go right over the gunnel (or on) onto the fender from the floor.

This is the only pic of mine with free floating fenders I got but the support bar is on the inside and a side maker light is on the back and front of the fenders.
