I just picked up a little Hallett 19’SS with a 1995 Yamaha 220 special. It runs but I’d like to repower it with a four stroke. What’s your recommendation for a boat this size? Mercury 200 or a 225 Verado

Currently it has a Gill standoff bracket and a land & sea jack plate. I’m concerned about the weight of the four strokes. The Yamaha weighs about 425 lbs and the 200 & 225 Verados are 505 lbs.

@Brooks D'Antonio is familiar with putting a 300 on a 19 hallett I believe.

Is your goal reliability or top speed? A 260 or 280 2.5 could be a lot of fun.

I’d like this boat to handle well and run in the 70’s. I own a Hallett 245 and that boat will go faster than I will ever need.

I was just concerned about the added weight of these newer outboards.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with that hull. A very good friend of mine had a 20' Stoker with a 300XS and it was a great boat under 75mph. When you tried to push past 75 the bow would do this circle dance or someone called it prop walk. It absofrickunlutely SUCKED & was scary.
Have fun, be careful.

Looking into my options and it seams that Mercury is having a shortage of engines. 6-8 month waiting list. So my option two would be a new Evinrude E-tech G2 200HP. What the opinion on this?

If you’re not chasing a top end number I think that motor is solid choice.

To be honest idk if I could ever leave Merc in a performance application. That being said the Evinrude could make me do it with their warranty.

I think @Racey was saying that their 2stroke tech is top notch and that their patents were part of the reason Mercury phased out 2strokes.

Something to think about is who will be servicing the motor. Make sure you have a relatively local mechanic for any warranty or service needs.

Have you tried calling WOT marine in Vista. I thought Kyle had a 200 Merc available. He has also rigged a few 19 Halletts, spectras, etc.

Whatever you decide post some pics of the motor swap!

Yep the Etec's are solid motors, i'm surprised you don't see more of them out here.

Lightweight and simple, the way an outboard is meant to be.

Not to rain on your party, a couple of thoughts.

If your goal is mid 70's, you certainty don't need 300 HP, a 19 ft boat needs to be carefully set up to be safe with HP in that category, done right you'd see 100 if the boat could handle it.

You're setting up a pleasure boat right? You might look into what the capacity plate said for Max HP. Don't exceed it, or you put yourself in a position where your insurance company may decline to cover you. All the liability is on you.

Also look for wood rot in the transom and stringers before you put big Hp on it, any soft spots in the floor? I've had them, they looked solid and then.........good luck and be safe above all

I’ve never seen too many boats where the factory plate matched the HP on the engine. I do understand the liabilities. It’s currently insured with a 220hp and no red flags were raised.
The plate says 160hp.

I’ve removed all of the interior and carpet and the floor is in great shape. This boat will be basically new after I’m done with it. It will never be worth what I put into it but I’ll enjoy it for years.

The Evinrude warranty is definitely appealing to say the least. You just don’t see a lot of them on the river. I’d love to get a Mercury Verado 200 but I’d rather not wait 6-8 months. Plus this boat will be the family wagon and not the weekend racer.

There use to be a couple of 19' Hallett ss's in the ski races. One had a Johnson V8 300 and the other had an old Merc 300. Both were solid boats the ran good at speed.

That’s got to be a wild ride for sure. I had a Hallett Vector and I always wished it had an outboard. A 300hp on that would be awesome!

First off I've put myself and others at risk with over powered boats, but they for the most part were race boats and not one to haul my family around in. a quick internet search will reveal litigation with boats that were overpowered and your insurance company will definitely care, Remember its their job to not spend money defending you. Call your insurance company and tell them you are exceeding the rated capacity of the boat, will you still insure me and would they put that in writing. https://www.boatus.org/study-guide/boat/capacities/

I'd remove items attached to the transom inside and out looking for compromised wood, if it all looks like new wood you're all good.

You don't because the market is dominated by Merc and Yamaha, Evinrude occupies only about 6 Percent of the market.

Boats over 20 ft in length are not placed under such regulation

The Evinrude is 535 lbs. I wouldn't consider that a lightweight 2 stroke. You may not see them in many performance applications due to them not really offering a surfacing lower unit

A friend of mine has a Vector with a 300xs. He's had A LOT of boats. He's had the Vector the longest.

WOT marine just rerigged my vector with a 250xs Optimax.

Kyle, Cole, and Max know their stuff. Kyle just went to France to take care of team USA’s waterski boat. He’s a very humble and knowledgeable person to talk with. He’s one of the few that’s ego does not get in the way. They know their stuff and don’t mess around. [emoji1303][emoji1303]

Sorry just noticed your reply. My brother and his father-in-law actually own the 19 Hallet but I've been in the boat plenty of times. The boat handles the weight of the 300 opti really well. Super confortable boat to ride in. I'll find some pictures and post them on here for you.

Removed the old boat anchor for the repower. I’ve decided to go with a new Evinrude 200HP E-TEC G2. The price is right, you can’t beat the warranty, and the engines are available.

Nice! Do they offer some sort of lower that allows surfacing applications?

Sent from my LM-G710VM using Tapatalk

They come standard with a low water pickup. The side mounts can be blocked off. And the lowers opened up with different grates.

I saw this boat for sale when I was surfing the Internet one evening. It looked like a good deal especially for someone looking to do what you're doing. Thanks for posting up the pics!! Keep us updated on your developments and add some other pics of things you've done. ;)

The Evinrude has been ordered and with a 200hp and a 19’ boat, what’s a good prop size for an all around river runner, 21 or a 23?

I’d start with a 23-24 depending on what prop.

Trophy plus, chopper or fury for all around.

High five if you’re consistently pulling 2-3 skiers at once. Or if you just want a good hole shot.

I run a 21 Laser II on my 18' Lavey with a 200 Merc for family time. When unloaded I run a 26 Ron Hill big ear chopper. I'm leaving a lot on the table I know since I'm spinning that chopper up near 6800, just don't have the cash to go prop testing.

Installed the new Seastar pro 2.0 helm and a MPI steering wheel. Went to Sunset Marine and picked up the new Evinrude 200. My Bobs jack plate finally arrived as well. Before I rig the boat it’s off to Martinez Interior to get a vinyl makeover. This beast will be an almost new boat from head to toe.

I'm running a heavy 21' boat with a 225 opti. Will turn a 24 trophy plus to the rev limiter with 4 on board. Used to run the same prop on a lighter 21' pad vee (Cee Bee Avenger) with a 200EFI, and it would just touch the limiter in perfect conditions. Current boat LOVES a 23" hydromotive quad IV, but needs a bigger pitch when the ballast tanks are empty. Have tried a few 26's and they cant pull me out of the water on a ski... would probably work great solo for longer distance running.

My guess is you will end up in the 24-25" range. Not sure where you are located, but you are welcome to test a few of mine if it works logistically.

I love reviving these older Outboard boats.

Gonna be badass! I'm especially curious how Martinez turns out, because that's my next stop on mine. I will probably model my interior after what you do.

I have a dilemma, to use my jack plate or not. The Gill stand off bracket, Bob’s jack plate, and the Evinrude make for a long boat. What everyone’s thought? Leave the jack plate or mount the engine directly to the stand off bracket?

I know the performance gains from the jack plate but it looks like crap hanging that far off the boat. Plus I mounted the engine two inches above the water pick up. Safe but raised up.

In your application I would mount it initially to the fixed bracket only. Leave some slop in the rigging so if you decide to add the mechanical jackplate you can at a later date. There are 3" mechanicals out there. First spot I would use is even with the keel or a little below depending what the motor mounts line up with. Remember that the Yamaha 220 Special that you pulled off only weighed around 375lbs. If you have a meat hook scale it would be great to get a real weight on your ETEC. Boat is really looking good.

Thank for the advice. I’m on the same page. The lower sits above the transom by two inches above the top water pickup and two inches below the antiventilation plate. The design of the Evinrude’s built in steering makes for the power head to sit real far back. The engine is supposed to weigh between 496 to 541 depending on the shaft and integrated steering. I’d assume somewhere in the middle with a 20” shaft and integrated steering. 518-520 lbs

How does your brothers handle with the 300. I have a promax 300 I'm contemplating putting on it. What prop is he running?
