Brought the grandkids down to SD for 4 days. Did the typical Sea World on Wed, Zoo on Tue and the USS Midway today being everyone's favorite so far. My FIL was ex Navy and worked as a planner at the LB Navy Shipyard until he retired/closed in 1996. I've been on deck of the USS Missouri when they mothbald it in the 90's and my daughter even sat in the captions chair. They had removed/replaced the teak deck on the Missouri during that time a d gave out about 3-4" long pieces of the old deck that were hot stamped "USS MISSOURI". I still have several of those stashed away for my grandson.
Anyway heres some pics from today.

I don't know how those sailors could survive below deck. We were down there in their quarters for about 20min and I was getting claustrophobic as hell.

Midway is very cool.
It's one thing to see them from land or on TV, quite another to walk the deck and thinking about being at sea and noticing no freeboard or guard rails...

Being a SD local that is one of my sons favorite daddy/son day. We do the midway, then the Maritime tours on harbor drive where you can tour an old sub, merchant ship etc. We also love the San Diego bay tours, there is a north and south tour and both are very informative, bar on board for beers and ya gotta hit the patriot jet boat ride (pretty impressive actually)

When my son was a Boy Scout many years ago his troop and had a sleep over on the ship. We slept on the deck underneath one of the planes. Seemed like an awesome idea. I have never been colder in my life! It was a pretty incredible tour and experience though.

Been on that ship allot. Did allot of the acrylic displays for them. Also have been building fake lifeboat pods to try to fill in the blanks for them,
When the Navy donated the ship it didn't have allot of the lifeboat pods so we made a mold and have been slowly replenishing them.

Went down there on our engagement trip at the beginning of the year and the USS Midway was one of our stops. We enjoyed it a lot, when our kids are a little older we will definitely be going back!

My employer did all the A/C for those spaces and other spaces on the ship. Spent a few weeks working on board. Good to hear it worked out. 😂. It’s an amazing museum and good time to take the tour.

I have a close friend that flew A4 Skyhawks and then F4 Phantoms off of her during Vietnam and my Cousin was a plane captain on a E4 Prowler during Operation desert storm in 91 , Great old ship , My Dad was a photographer on the Big O and is in some sense walking around on the flight deck in the movie Bridges over Toko Ri . Those ships certainly served our beloved country well.

Damn. Just mentioned this earlier in another thread. Need to go back and see the last few sections we missed. Do they still have the 360 rides? Go in and spin around fighting jet things?

My grandpa served on the Midway. We were extremely fortunate to have been able to tour it with him as our guide before he passed. You hear the stories but it means a lot more when you see the real life place it occurred.

If your ever in Groton Connecticut go take the Nautilus submarine tour. I have no idea how those guys spent months in that tiny thing, I started to freak out just on the tour. Different times, the Karen’s of today could never do that.

During the Vietnam evacuation I remember seeing film of helicopters being pushed off the Midway into the ocean to make more room ....... definitely a cool experience to walk around on the Midways flight deck

Yes but the line was long so we passed on the opportunity.

Looks like a good time with the fam. The kid looks pumped!

@ONE-A-DAY if you haven’t already, read Blind Man’s Bluff. Couldn’t put that book down. It’s why seeing the Nautilus in person is on my list 👌🏽
