Friend and I bought a 73 Hallett. Can't believe I'm about to do this again..... at least all I have to worry about on this one is the engine and drive train. Cosmetics and trailer is on him.

It came with everything except a motor. Here we go! Budget build and flip with some fun in between is the plan

Cool !
Where do you find these little gems in the rough ?

Found this one in Beaumont, 5 hour drive there, 5 hours back. Guy was super cool though. The boat was exactly as it was described down to every flaw with pictures. Cash for title swap and we were on our way. Craigslist success story.

My first boat was a 1969 19.5 Hallett jet, from what I can see, it's very similar. Good luck.

This one has all Hallcraft running gear with an in/out only. Im considering installing a velvet drive to make it a little easier to drive but haven't decided yet.

You pulled the trigger quicker. I saw this float on a sight requesting transport cost from Beaumont Tx to Flagstaff Az.

You were one of about 200 lol, he had 4 guys lined up behind us just for today and the weather was shit. We had to road prep it in the mud 😟

The bones are good but the paint should really be stripped off and redone. We don't know how far were gonna take it yet. Getting it driving is first priority.

I'll let you know as soon as its for sale😇😜🤑

Damn Breck!!!! You're gonna need a bigger yard......

why? when I have friends with yards?! 😂

also, my buddy and boat partner has his heart set on a 4150 style fabricated scoop for the dual carbs. does anybody have one?? If I can't find one for a reasonable price, I'm leaning towards twin vstacks

Keep it OG. You going with headers?
Old flats with giant shotgun scoops and wings just look stupid.
Old school short v stacks are cool.

We will be using the Hooker wet injected headers that came with the boat. It will be mostly oldschool with twin Holley 600s. It will have a Delco EST ignition system and be fed by a Bravo water pump. We have decided to use all the original Hallcraft running gear and give up on a reverse for now.The only thing we sprung big money for was the tunnel ram/carbs and a Comp Cams "Thumper" hydraulic cam kit. I am assembling it with 9.25:1 Forged pistons but otherwise a stock rotating assembly. Pretty much the rest of it is all stuff either him or I (mostly me) have had lying around and were putting together a boat out of spare parts.

Fabricated SS carb scoop and some saddle tanks are still on the wishlist of anybody has anything lying around.

We haven't decided on a final colorscheme yet but are planning on keeping the main body green. We're strongly considering something with hockey sticks though.

Any input or ideas from the inmates is welcome so long as it doesn't involve fuel injection. Those are dirty words here 😁

Hockey sticks are for jet boats….lol

what did I say about fuel injection?!!! 😡🤣

Also, another part showed up today😁

Comp Cams "Extreme Marine" kit.
cam, lifters, springs, retainers, double row timing set. and I will be using a set of Skorpion 1.6 aluminum roller rockers I have lying around so long as the clearance is there.

guess what I was able to wrangle up tonight. picked me up a good pair of used LS6/7 heads and a complete set of Scorpion 1.7 Aluminum roller rockers for the low low price of free ninety free for this budget ballin' project!

I guess sometimes it pays off to have a friend or two 😁

And if any of yall are wondering how I got this free short block. Somebody had an oopsy a while back and had to short block a Carver. They gave me this engine so they didnt have to dispose of it.

Hey LAM! its my first day kind of back on my feet. The doc ordered me back into regular shoes and to start putting some weight back on my foot. he says I need to start walking around "as pain allows" so that it will heal properly but to only wear flat shoes and stay on paved surfaces for now. So, today Im back in the shop playing with the Hallett engine.

I didnt get a whole lot done, but I pressed the oil pickup into the oil pump amd got it installed, I got the fuel pump pushrod installed, and I got both the heads torn down.

🤔 i am going to have to paint them to use them. the engine color scheme is green gold and silver. but they are aweful nice lol
forgive me if i missed it but looking at the first pics of boat posted, the mounts look to be for a flywheel forward mounting. the oil pump pickup is the last pics is not. :(

Im running a shallow 9 qt pan that is baffled. wake boats have used standard truck pans for decades and have been fine. My pan will be more than adequate.

Wow nice project there!
How did you find the block? I’m tying t find a BBC 4 bolt main block to start putting together.

it was a take out from a 1980s Carver. somebody dropped a bolt down the intake and they ended up short blocking it. my engine guys out in Tyler still let you spec a 4 bolt main block. theyll do semi-custom build to order short blocks and long blocks.

Im hoping everybody had a great Labor Day Weekend. It hurt me terribly to have to decline invite after invite out on friends boats this weekend because of this damned foot. Just a few more weeks though. Anyway, being stuck at home, I made some great progress on the Hallett engine. Get ready for a photo dump.

First I started by stripping all the valvetrain from the heads. This proved to be much harder than anticipated as many of the keepers were being extremely lets call it stubborn.
20220903_135710.jpg

Then I proceeded with the poor mans valve job. I probably could have gotten away with leaving the valves as was but I had to take the heads apart anyway to install the heavier valve springs that came with the cam I selected for the engine. It is a Comp Cams "Thumper" If I hadnt already mentioned it above.
20220903_153723.jpg

Just the valve lapping alone took me over 2 hours, not to mention all the time spent in head clean up. This is the end result before reassembly. Notice the fresh lookong valve seats.
20220903_171507.jpg

And the valves. There was still plenty of meat where they rest in the seats and there wasnt any tulipping. I did my best to clean them up but the stems did have some caked on carbon I could not get off. Theyre kind of ugly but whats important is taken care of.
20220903_171520.jpg

A before and after shot of a couple of the exhaust valves. I was careful to make sure every valve went back into the exact respective holes as well.
20220903_152257.jpg

Pro tip for reassembly, a little dab of grease on the inside of the keepers helps them stick to the valve stem until your able to release the spring compressor to lock them into place. The new Comp springs came with new retainers and keepers. I still sent a few flying and had to retreive them from across the shop. I recommend safety glasses when doing this 😉
20220903_193434.jpg

Once I got the heads reassembled, I couldnt help myself and mocked up the roller rockers just to look. Im hoping that I wont have any interference issues using these (1.7) over stockers with the bigger came and the dome pistons.
20220903_200829.jpg

I do think I lucked out with those recent free valve covers as I dont think these are going to fit under the stock stamped valve covers
20220905_110208.jpg

Ive been pinching pennies in every place feasible but I did not have a set of head bolts or main bolts for the matter for the engine. One of my splurges were some ARP fasteners.
20220905_111557.jpg

The heads are installed and the rest is pretty self explanatory. but very exciting. Put on some sunglasses before scrolling down.😄

Thanks for following along! Ive given the boat a name given its intended color pallette and the nature of the build (as many spare parts as possible and garage-built vibe from the engine to boat itself) "Pocket Change"

Standby for a soon to be completed engine assembly!

Did you check the valve keeper to guide boss/seal tolerance? Mine needed.100" taken off the top for a .578" lift roller cam for a .040" clearance at full lift.

I have not installed the rest of the valvetrain to check it yet. I know worst case scenario the cam kit is built to work with and clear the pistons with a 1.6 Rocker, but Id really like to use these 1.7s if I can. Im also using a hydraulic flat tappet cam, I dont have the cam card in front of me but the lift I believe is about 0.50
