If the patient got the jab through the hospital, it's recorded as "vaccinated". If through CVS, Walgreens or any other source the "unknown" box must be checked.

What a misleading headline. It should match what the article says "The New York Times has finally accepted that individuals unvaccinated against COVID-19 who previously contracted the virus had “lower rates of infection and hospitalization than those protected by vaccines alone." Of course natural immunity is better than a shot.
