Howard GN 20', DOES ANYONE HAVE ONE OR ANY PIC's you can post up. Was a popular boat at Arrowhead in the early 70's ski-racing.

Are you talking about the 19' Schiada / Howard? or was there a different boat?

No there is a 20'. I think the first one was all wood in 67. Then Howard made the mold and knocked out quite a few. I'm surprised with all of your history you haven't run across one before.:D:D:D

If you browse around this page on Boost Power's website, you will see many of the old Arrowhead ski boats. Including a few 20s.:thumbsup

http://boostpower.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=128_114
There are many pages of pics. Check the old Hallett on page 2

That A-12 20' Schiada now has a NA Brummett engine. It sold a while back on Boat Trader. It is still a very clean boat. I think that is Bill Johnson's old boat from the 80's. One of the first Race Aero turbo set-ups at Arrowhead.

No. I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you. :skull I almost bought a 20 Howard GN and I compared the pics the guy sent me to my friends Rush. I was then told by someone they were the same bottom. :thumbsup

I've been told (not by Rush but by others) Rush started with this hull (or at least the bottom) when he built his GN mold. He may have added two strakes to the bottom, I think the Howard GN has four strakes and the Rush has six (?).

I am friends with the guy who has that 20 Howard for sale up in Tahoe. I spoke to him last night. He said he did talk to Grier and that the bottom is very simalar. He did make some little changes though. These things have a 5 degree bottom. Pretty flat.

I'm not sure if this Howard is a 19 or 20 but it was on Los Angeles Craigslist over a year ago. I really dug it so I saved the photos, even though they're too small. It's a late 70's v-drive. :D

Just a bit of trivia. The Howard 20 GN seen in the photos (SC 47) was owned and driven by Don McCormick from Oklahoma. In its day, one of the most dominate marathon boats on record with Keith Black Hemi Chrysler power. In ski racing, Bob Dyer from Phoenix also had a very fast Howard 20 with supercharged Keith Black Hemi power. The 19-foot vee that Howard sold (and SKV also had a version of it too) was originally built by Len Schiada (one of the last projects Len completed at his Gardena location before he passed). The first 19 Schiada was built and sold to Dick Colburn. Dick used it for both ski racing and occasional marathons. Jim Hart and his son Bert, both employees of Schiada and excellent plug makers, did most of the labor.

From 1990 to 2000 we owned what is referred to as a Howard 20' GN. The orange and white photos posted earlier are clear shots of this design. I have a "period" Howard brochure that features a wood decked 20' GN set up for ski racing. The name on the transom is "Phoenix" with the #112 on the side. Inside the brochure the same hull design is described as a "20' Semi-Vee." The text refers to its marathon racing heritage and I believe I have seen reference to Howard GN's of this design winning the national championship in the late 60's or early 70's. It may well be the SC 47 boat shown earlier. The brochure also shows this hull as a "20' Wood Deck" in either v-drive or jet as well as a "20' Mini- Cruiser." I am not sure if these hulls were ever marketed as "GN's by Howard but they certainly were successfull on the GN racing circuit. If anyone would like copies on the brochure photos I would be happy to scan and e-mail if you send me your address.

We were at Parker several years ago with our boat and Grier was there with his Howard 20' that he used as the "plug" to make the original Rush GN. It is wood decked and features a "bubble type deck". He told me that the hull was essentially the same as the Howard but he added 12'' to the lenghth in the area of the kick board forward of the driver. Later he modified the bottom by adding a "delta pad" that he claimed did wonders for the speed and handleing.

Our boat was originally delivered with a fiber glass engine cover [long since discarded by the guy we bought it from] and I have seen one wood decked one with a wood engine hatch. I stopped by the old Belflower location in the early 90's and the mold was out in the back. I also heard through the vine that is was destroyed. These are really great hulls.

Supposedly Gene took the mold to the dump, he said they hadn't been made in a long time and it was taken up space. Yes there was a fiberglass hatch cover to go with them if you wanted one. I had never seen the 20' mini cruiser before, very rare.:thumbsup

Gene (Raysonman) sent me scanned images of the Howard brochure he was talking about. Here is the wood-decked 20' GN on the cover.
