Hydraulic steering fluid filter

Are you guys running with one of these? I have a 22 Daytona, Chevy 509, mild NA, with dual hydraulic stering and it has an filter that I haven't been able to identify. I need to replace the internal element and can't find a replacement. However, my very experienced mechanic says they are not needed. Are you guys running with one? I know Teague sells one and am considering installing one but wanted to see if anyone has one or something similiar. Here is the one I was looking at:
