Finally found a car that I was good with, 2003 Cadillac Seville STS, loaded with 58K on the clock. Clean is an understatement, right in my budget for what I wanted to spend. Knowing how I am, I drive a car for 6 mos to a year and sell it, usually make a few schuckles and move on. Picked it up Saturday morning at 9, drove right to the smog place and was told NO-PASS, car wasn't ready and the check engine light wouldn't come on. Mechanic said no biggie, drive the car on the freeway for 30-50 miles and it should be ready to test, BUT the check engine light must be fixed in order to pass. Since I was heading to Seal Beach for St. Baldrick's I decide to leave it till Monday and drop it at Mtn. View Chevrolet for repairs. Dropped it yesterday along with the following items I wanted checked out.

#1.) Smog Issue, figure check engine light deal
#2.) I may have smelled anti-freeze while the hood was up at the smog ck so I wanted a check of the cooling system
#3.) LR Brake light out, replace bulb
#4.) When coming to a slow stop, sounds like clicking coming from the LF

I get a call from my service writer a few hours later with info re-smog/ck engine light, it could be a bulb or the entire mirrored cluster, price $350.00-$1200.00, nothing wrong with cooling system, BUT the water pump maybe sweating, LR bulb $10.00 installed and the front brakes are shot, that's the clicking noise I hear.

The only thing that concerns me is the smog deal, I call the man I bought the car from and explain to him that the car won't pass smog(CA law/DMV law, seller responsible for car passing smog), he says, "Phil, I don't want to make waves and I want you happy, would you like your money back?" I said I'd rather keep the car but it would be up to him if he wanted to fix the car, he said NO-PROBLEM but could I take it to his mechanic Wilson-Bell in Rancho? I said let's see what WB says and I'll leave it up to you if you want to fix it at your cost or just give me my money back, so I dropped the car at WB last night and will wait to hear.

While I was there I start talking to the owner about my other issues, he said he'd check the car out AGAIN, I said AGAIN, he says ya, it was just here 3-22-16 for a gasket replacement and the owner had him do what he always does when it's in for service, check the car top to bottom, front to back.

He went on to explain how the owner is crazy about his cars, ANYTHING wrong gets fixed, doesn't matter the cost, takes me in the office and pulls the service records on this Cadillac and shows me. He says, "if I missed the front brake issues when I checked the car 3-22-16, I'll do the job for free". I can't wait to hear if Mtn. View is pulling one on me, heads will fuckin roll if that's the case.

I'll keep ya'll posted on what happens.

Chances are good it's simple pimple......58k on a 13 yr old car ain't much at all. Seals/gaskets may be your biggest concern going forward with the low usage.

Either way, that sounds like he's a pretty damn legit mechanic. If Mtn. View is trying to pull one over on you, at it it seems like you may have found a replacement for them.

One would think that "checking the brakes" would be high on the list for any thorough inspection...:hmm
I'd give them a shot, at this point you've got nothing to lose

most clusters are LED bulbs these days (even my $1k 03 focus was a led lit cluster) and they rarely go bad. the previous owner of my focus put a piece of electrical tape over the light and cleared the ECU codes so when i ran my code scanner i saw no codes and then when i took it to be smogged it obviously had a CEL. also it failed because they need to see the CEL come on at start, and then turn off.

i hope that they're not trying to cover up an issue. the fact that its not "smog ready" is a red flag to me. the smog guy said to drive to for a while... this means the smog checks arent in a ready state and it hasnt completed its drive cycles.. because the ECU was reset, best case its just because of a dead battery...

the only way you're gonna know is to drive it around for a few, wait for the drive cycles to complete and see which system is at fault and go from there.

i personally use an ELM-327 bluetooth odbii dongle ($12..) and an android phone with torque pro to do all of my live view, etc. check out short fuel trims, long term trims, and o2 pulse's. you'll know in 20 seconds how the car is REALLY performing well versus compensating for a problem before you start throwing parts at it.

Manifold gasket just replaced on 3-22-16, all others were fine per WB.

Funny thing is, new front struts and other work done 7-13-13, BUT only 5200 miles ago, per WB, brakes were fine then, NO WAY he wore out the breaks in that amount of miles. They are checking that also.

WB hooked up a chinga under the dash and it read that the car was ready for smog, says could take 2 miles or more to reset, the bulb is the issue, he swears he saw it on when the car was there 3-22-16, now it's just getting the bulb on.

I can get it smogged without the CK engine light deal BUT I don't want to push this off to anyone else down the road.

This repair is up to the seller, if he does it great if not I get the $$$$ back.

Have not heard as of yet from WB, if I don't hear by tomorrow I'm gonna check on an update. The seller has the option, he'll either fix it or refund my money, I do like the car though.

So the ck engine light bulb is inside the cluster, not cheap, it will cost the seller $800.00 which he has no problem paying for. I have given him the option of unwinding the deal or doing what he's comfortable with. The car is great so I was happy to hear him say no problem paying for that repair. WB will update me on the brake issue, I told him I'd pay for that even though he made that comment, he said cool and said he'd do the front brakes for $150.00 complete job which I thought was very fair.

More updates if anything changes.

Hey check with the guy who does all the cluster work on the GM trucks. Fixed the step motor issues and such. Maybe he could fix it. Hopefully it's just the bulb.

When he did the step motors on my Suburban it was like an extra 30 or 40 bucks to replace all the light bulbs too so they were all new.

Guys name is Al. Several threads in here. 714-240-5225

I was about 160 or something to completely redo my cluster with new motors and light bulbs.

That's just what I was thinking. It should just be a soldered in LED. Just as easy or easier to change as a stepper motor.

I called him Monday and spoke with him, I was trying to help this guy out if possible, he said they don't work on the mirrored clusters and Cadillacs.

When I was at the dealership last night I told Ed the service writer I needed a rental, he said this isn't even your truck, I said ya but I'm driving it so get me a car, he says go tell the boss you need a car off the lot, I walk in and Adrian the GM says take any new Sonic on the lot, I'm like WTF, will I fit in it? He says not my problem, LOL. Well it's plenty big but what a slug. Oh it does have a back up camera.

So the LED lights on the cluster are all fixed and the sellers part is done, he still asked if I'd like my money back, he's a nice guy but I know why, he has 3 other people that stopped and looked at the car while it was being repaired in the event I said ya let's unwind the deal. So now WB is checking the brakes for me and will do the job if needed.

Maybe some brain-e-acks here can help, the drivers power seat worked fine for the day I had it, then it just stopped, can it be a fuse, or is it the motor?

When I would move the drivers seat all the way back in the my wifes old Ford Edge the harness would pull off and the seat would go dead.

There should be several motors in there, I would think it's doubtful they all failed at the same time.
Probably a connector or something, methinks...?

So the car is smogged finally, just had to drive it till the computer cleared out, front brakes are done, gets detailed today, calling a mobile dent guy for a small dent in the LR door then gonna tackle the drivers seat deal. Spoke with a specialist and he said basically the same as Pronstar did so hoping it's no big deal.
