I really like the 2.0. It has alot of pep over the 3.6 and not far behind the 392. Around town 17 mpg and climbing. Drove it from California to Havasu 16mpg on 37 stock 410's. I'm going to put 488's in it.
2.0 vs 392 about 200 less hp and torque. Now if we are talking a 4XE then the numbers are pretty close.

I have a rubicon 4XE wrangler, a ‘24 392 wrangler and a northstar ranger crew. Ya only live once lol

Sorry, but offroading in a jeep is for old people. I don't get the attraction to rock crawling either. I like bombing through the desert at warp speed and blasting through the whoops at 60 plus. I guess I haven't gotten over my need for speed.
Or mid life crisis 🙃

Pistol Pete once said "Rock Crawling is like masturbation; no fun to watch".

I used to love rock crawling, but I was drunk most of the time. Rock crawling done right is poor people driving junk over stupid shit. I never understand fully built new Wranglers rock crawling. Buying a clapped out $6k POS and doing stupid shit is super fun. Smashing your super nice Wrangler sucks, I've done both. There is something special about intentionally crashing a car, it is just rad. Even better when you are 12 deep in a cooler full of CLs. Don't believe the hype, drunk driving is a party.

Having a vehicle that can go fast in the desert, drive over rocks and get you back on the highway is the perfect OHV. Well maybe that and a mid 80s CR500.

I like the weight, size and performance of a modern UTV, but I don't like the storage, noise and plastic. I'm old I guess.
In my opinion, what it comes down to, is getting the same type of vehicle your friends have.

This is 100% accurate. It really does not matter what you have if you don't have friends with the same type of vehicle. Or if you don't have friends.

I miss Pistol and his antics both in person and online. He was super fun to race with and hang out in the desert. VIVA PISTOL PETE

Then sold it for $4500 in 2015

I bought the budget model Defender. No AC or heat. Prices have come way down on the used market. The limited model would be nice. But at the time they were 35k otd.

It works good for its purpose. I use at as a 3rd golf cart. Waverunner launch vehicle. Shuttle to the top of the dunes. Recovery vehicle and to haul the dirtbikes to the flats. It fits in a conex which is nice.

You can go that speed in a jeep but it costs as much as two side by sides to build it. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Bingo. I have an "Ftoy" (not a real hendrix ftoy, just something we slapped together in ~2 weeks with a clapped out yota), and its amazing how much fun you can have as you well know. Its by far the most impressive thing you can do, vehicle wise, with ~5K$. Its not fast. Its not pretty. But it goes 99% of the same places my buddies with jimmys buggys, rock lizards, etc can go. Its also boring as FFFFFF to watch someone else.

However, once my friend group stopped drinking as much, nobody wants to go rock crawling anymore. I have recently realized it was just an avenue to hang out and drink but with an excuse. Its amazing the good times that can happen with a few silver cokes and half a dozen beaters in the middle of the desert.

@pwerwagn Yup, spot on. The crowd you hang out with usually dictates whether you're a flat billed wearing bad ass get there as fast as you can affliction wearing MthrF'er, or just flip flop Hawaiian button up and jort wearing just enjoying the view MthrF'er. 🤣 Either way is good as long as you're enjoying the time with family and friends.

Due to some recent health issues I unfortunately have to hang up my Harley riding of 20+ years and selling two bikes. Searching for a new hobby and have really been looking at the Jeep thing. I don't care about hauling ass in the dez as a SXS is capable of. The idea of off-roading/exploring and doing some forest trails has sparked some interest. Being able to drive it on the street in CA is a bonus too.

My question for you Jeep guys is the pricing seems to be all over the place. I would like a newer one but would rather find something already done with all the good stuff. Opinions on the Gladiator vs a regular Rubicon? Is the ECO diesel good or something to stay away from?

I saw this Gladiator for example but price seems steep compared to others? Are the mods worth the extra? 31k mi and he is asking 54k.

Definitely has some nice parts on it. I have heard mixed things about the Eco diesel, my dad had one in a Grand Cherokee and had nothing but problems with it, mainly with the emissions. Some love it and others not so much. A Gladiator on 40's should be able to get you where you want to go. On the trails the only drawback I have seen with them in more stock form is departure angle and the bed hanging up or scraping on steep obstacles, I followed one in Moab and he was constantly scraping. 40's will help on that tho 😁

Proceed at your own risk, but I had a 2021 Gladiator Rubi Eco Diesel... same sort of setup.. about 30K in upgrades... The fuel pump detonated about 9K miles in and spent 250 days out of the 500 I owned it in the shop trying to get it back to nomalcy.. they replaced everything after the failure and it never ran right ever again as there was likely irreparable harm to whole fuel system. They ended up writing us a check for 92K (Lemon law) full cost of jeep and upgrades. Definitely leery of that Dodge/Jeep/Ram eco diesel...

Prior to that I had the e torque 2.0 in a 2 door JL rubi great motor; prior to that JK with the v6 good motor; as well great motor is the 4.0 6 in the TJ.... Personally I like the TJ the best for farting around Parker/Havasu...

LOL I've had the Corvette part covered for 10 years as well. Guess I started young! Really going to miss the Harleys but probably for the better honestly the way people drive now days.

Good to know thanks for the info. The Gladiator set up is nice but skeptical of that Eco Diesel.

My nephew has a 2021 JL Rubicon v6 with 12k mi fully loaded and super clean. Has a small basic lift/shocks with 35's, winch bumper and few other minor mods. He will take $39k for it. Thinking going this route and would have some extra $ to upgrade shocks and other suspension upgrades.

That price sounds about right for the current pricing. I'm not too privy on the new models out there, but I'd keep it simple. The 4dr's will provide you with a ton more room and options for longer adventure type traveling. It will also handle a bit better on the road. Longer means you will need a slightly bigger tire to account for the wheel base difference if you get into some climby type wheeling. It's got it's pro's a cons. We went to Moab and rented a Rubi on 32" tires with a 2" lift. It would crawl just about anything I pointed it at (I wasn't trying to kill every obsticle) so in perspective, you do not need a highly modified rig on 40"+ tires to go out and have a ton of fun.

I'm trying to talk the wife into either a new 4dr Bronco or Newer (2016 and up) Jeep on 35's. For the type of wheeling we would enjoy together, either one of those would be perfect. My only draw back at the moment is I believe the Bronco's are still too early in production to really know all the kinks. Luckily, my current budget is preventing me from pulling the trigger so that R&D time is on my side. 🤣

Whatever you get, just get out there and use it.

Stock or mild Rubi's will surprise you with what they will do! I did a 3.5" Metalcloak with Fox2.0's on our 392 with 37's. For the wheeling I like to do without my Wife punching me in the arm it was more than capable. The next one I will probably get a Rubi with the XR package and leave it alone, 2" lift and 35's factory is plenty. Famous last words
