So in addition to my golf cart build which is nearing completion but not quite done, I decided to start on one of my small boats.

A friend of mine gave me this boat about a year ago in exchange for resealing a bravo3 for him. It literally cost me the price of a seal kit and a few hours labor but the engine had a knock in it.

As luck had it, I had a boat come in a couple months later with a near identical engine with a cracked engine block but a good rotating assembly where the owner elected for a new engine. I paid the core penalty to keep the engine and as of tonight am in the process of marrying the 2 engines together to make a functional boat out of it. We shall she how it goes as I'm rolling some dice on the success of the marriage.

Yep. So far I'm about $400 into it. I'm hoping I can be into the boat for under $2000 at which point I'll either utilize it as a work boat or flip it.

I'm running the Vortec heads that came off of the cracked block engine and am gonna slap a 4bbl Weber on it.

I have not quite pinpointed the water source yet but I still have yet to split the exhaust manifolds. It could have also been wake surge or overheat due to this bad tstat

Exhaust was free and clear. It's starting to look like previous owner wake surged the boat and continued trying to start it until he broke it.

Vortec heads do not like heat at all. Get them a little hot and they crack.

Either way those heads are gone! Only thing that was kept from the original motor was the block, pistons, and bolt ons. Everything else is from my cracked engine

Sleeper engine is the name of the game. 600cfm Weber on top of the Edelbrock performer intake. I had the Weber collecting dust and cobb webs sitting on a shelf and threw a kit in it. Total money spent to date: $800

Edit/update: while waiting for paint to dry (rather than watching it), I was doing some research. And though Mercruiser did, Volvo Penta never offered a 4bbl 4.3L. All stats show this engine should be worth about 225hp/270ft.lb. of tq. A good little hot rod for an 18ft runabout

First fire on the engine tonight! sorry no video but she was a screamer. sleeper engine for sure. I turned back the idle mixture screws to 1.25 turns out and set base timing at 12degrees. She seams to be happy there. Also cleaned up the inside and rebuilt the rear seat bench in the last couple days. I made some repair stitches to some of the seats which are noticeable when looking for them but the vinyl was too rigid to allow for me to deskin the seats and put them on the machine so my hand stitches will have to do. I still plan on recovering the engine hatch cover tho. I was also just given a complete dual zone Polk stereo system for the boat that was a take out of a Cantius. I'm not sure if I want to install it in this boat as the stereo is probably worth as much as the boat itself. Anyway.... some before photos

Maiden voyage tonight just on a whim. Everything actually went well surprisingly and she runs like a scalded ass dog, especially once you get her up over 2500rpm. Oh and also a new personal best. 5lb large mouth, cuz you know when you lake test a boat you need to put it in real world scenarios and shit.

Not too shabby for a $1000 boat

Generally I do too but I was going for that completely stock look and Volvo likes to paint their carburetors, so does Merc for that matter..

got a buddy who has a bad ass skater but also has a old 22' mariah for running around the river and local lakes in. he will tell you he has more fun out tooling around in that beater than the skater. he might sing a different song around the skater crowd tho..lol

*don't be surprised if you end up spending a lot of time out on that old sunbird

I know exactly what you mean. The best times I've had were on my old beater center console with my 115 carbed Johnson. I still regret selling that one
