Within the 70 miles of shoreline on Lake Tahoe lies many boathouses, some old, some remodelled some fairly new, but all unique in their own special way. There is this one particular boat house, that caught my attention because of the history being protected within. Measuring 18? x 60?, this boathouse structure was built in 1903 and originally housed a 50' powerboat named Miduena (My lady), a mid-ship cabin elegant cruiser. As wonderful as Miduena sounds, the interesting cargo (to me) within the boathouse is what currently resides within: an all metal 35? speedboat originally called the Cigarette IV, built by Brewster Auto Body in Long Island for Lord Gordon Hamersley of New York launched in 1926. Originally Hamersley had this speedboat built to compete in the famous race against time with the fastest train in United States called the 'Twentieth Century Limited' from Albany to New York that was won by the speedboat Teaser in 1925. The other ambition that Mr. Hamersley had was to have this speedboat racer capture the Dodge Trophy and Beat R.F. Hoyt's speedboat named Teaser.  This Dura- aluminum boat (Cigarette IV) won the historic 1926 President?s Cup race at the national Speedboat Regatta in New York. President Calvin Coolidge presented the Presidents cup to Gordon Hamersley at the White house naming the Cigarette IV as the world fastest speedboat of all time. In 1937, Californian Stanley Dollar JR purchased the Cigarette IV , sealed it in vaseline and then shipped it by boat to San Francisco.  From San Francisco, it was trucked to Lake Tahoe then the vessel was later renamed ?the Mercury" to compete against rivals Herbert Fleishhacker JR (see earlier post on the pool in SF) and Henry Kaiser Jr. in gentlemen racers at the yearly July lake races held on Lake Tahoe. In the 1937 lake Tahoe Championship race, a broken drive shaft halts Stanley Dollars entry and the Kaiser?s 'Hornet' wins the race.
The next year in the July Lake race events, Stanley Dollar JR, driving the silver hulled dura -aluminum "Mercury" recaptured the Lake Tahoe speedboat racing title in what was described as the most thrilling championship race in years.
Then in 1975, the ?Mercury? was donated to the ?League to save Lake Tahoe? by the Dollar estate and was later gifted to the Sierra State Parks Foundation and the Foundation transferred title for the boat to California State Parks in 1995.
The Dollar Estate at Carnelian Bay became the Dollar Hill and Chinquapin developments. And the Dollar Estate in Walnut Creek is now the Rossmoor retirement community.

CIGARETTE IV STATS
The all-aluminum speedster, Cigarette IV is 35 feet over all, 33 feet on the water line and six feet- six inches beam.  She was constructed with 979 pieces of duraluminum fastened with 14,250
rivets, 7,087 bolts and 238 screws. This 35' vessel weighs in at less than 975 lbs less rigging.   .The original engine was a Curtiss V-12 aircraft engine that produced 625 horsepower. The twelve-cylinder V.1400 
Curtiss motor,built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company of Garden City, is similar to the motor used by Lieutenant Cy Bettis in the airplane with which he won the Pulitzer Trophy in the National Air Races 
at Mitchell Field. The fuel tanks, one fore and one aft, have a capacity of 150 gallons of gasoline, and the fuel consumption is about forty-five gallons per hour. As the boat lay in the water after launching, she had 
cost her owner between $50,000 and $60,000 in 1926.

Originally built in 1935 by Crystal Sugar, the Clarksburg Sugar Mill on the Sacramento River. My dad worked here for 25 years up until the day they closed the doors.

Not long after the tsunami that was generated from the Alaskan earthquake the Eel River flooded and closed off access to the north coast.

The bridge coming into Rio Dell (seen on Guy Fieri's DDD closing credits) and the bridge heading north from Rio Dell with the now dismantled Eel River Sawmill underwater. The building hanging off the edge is still there ironically.

whoa, interesting info. I remember hearing about the Tsunami that hit the west coats and also hit Hawaii (in '64) if I am not mistaken as well leveled Hilo.
Sorry to hear about the economy, a few blows from not only the Tsunami but also the Green mafia.

"The U.S. Army took control of the Presidio in 1846, ?.filling in the marshlands, the Army covered over it and created an airfield.
During World War I the Army constructed numerous temporary buildings on the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition at the Presidio of San Francisco and linked it to Fort Mason
1918 Congress passed Public Law 189 to establish eight "air coast defense stations" and appropriated $1,500,000 for the construction of one of them at the Presidio, to protect San Francisco Bay. The[Army] board chose the former exposition site as much for its sheltered beach to protect seaplane operations as the fact that the infield of its racetrack was already in use as an aviation field.
Originally, Crissy Field was considered ideal for air operations. However, wind and fog often made for poor flying conditions, construction of the Golden Gate Bridge threatened to make local flights more difficult, and the 3,000 foot (910 m) runway was too short for more heavily loaded aircraft. The Army also considered Crissy Field vulnerable to possible enemy ship attacks due to its location on the water's edge of the San Francisco Bay. In 1936, Hamilton Field opened in Marin County, and while Crissy Field ceased to be a first-line air base, air operations continued until the 1970s
After World War II a paved runway replaced the grass landing field and the Sixth Army Flight Detachment used Crissy Field for light utility and passenger planes, and helicopter operations. During the Vietnam war the Army used Crissy Field for liaison flights and MedEvac flights to transport wounded Vietnam soldiers 40 miles from Travis Air Force Base to the Presidio's Letterman Army Hospital, a trip by ambulance on surface roads would take too long and possibly be delayed by traffic into San Francisco. At the end of the Vietnam war in 1974 the Army closed Crissy Field to airplanes, though helicopter operations continued for several years."

if you are traveling east on the San Rafael Bridge and you look north on the Richmond Penninsula, you can barely make out a castle just at waterline against the hillside of Point Molate,, South of Point San Pable and North of the toll bridge was once known as Winehaven.

"Winehaven was a winery in the town of Richmond, California, that held the title of "world's largest winery" for 12 years (1907?1919).[2] It later became a fuel depot for the United States Navy.

After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake left the city in ruins, the California Wine Association moved to Point Molate, a promontory on the east shore of San Pablo Bay, and began construction of Winehaven. At the peak of the season, as many as 400 workers lived here, as all of the California Wine Association's shipments to foreign, coastal and New York markets sailed from the Winehaven dock?shipment capacity was 500,000 gallons (1,892,705 liters) a month, and 40 ships sailed annually for New York alone. The winery was shut down by Prohibition in 1919; and the company sold off its assets to avoid bankruptcy. Winehaven went mostly unused from about 1920 until the late 1930s.

Winehaven today
The Navy bought the 412 acres (167 ha) site in 1941, moved into the winery buildings, and constructed 20 large concrete tanks on the hillsides above for a fuel depot. Thousands of drums of fuel were stored in huge buildings, pipelines were laid, a new pier was built and the old one was eventually removed. The old Winehaven Hotel was pressed into service for a period as barracks and mess hall, and the workers' houses were renovated for the use of naval personnel. The Commanding Officer of the Naval Fuel Depot was assigned the largest house on the bluff overlooking the others, which previously had been the home of the winery superintendent.

Despite the switch from wine to fuel, the historic district remains virtually unaltered from its days as a winery. There are 35 buildings in the National Register historic district built between 1907 and 1919, the most notable being the castle-like Winehaven Building adorned with crenellated parapet and corner turrets. Also within the district is the Winemaster's House (Building 60), which became the Commanding Officer's residence, and the Village of Point Molate, a row of turn-of-the-century cottages used to house Winehaven and military families. The Navy continued to operate the fuel depot during the Korean War and Vietnam War until it was decommissioned in 1995."

The Carson Mansion in Eureka built in 1884-85. William Carson is quoted as saying about his Mansion: “…if I build it poorly, they would say that I was a damned miser; if I build it expensively, they will say I'm a show off; guess I'll just build it to suit myself.”

The pink house is named The Pink Lady and was built for Carson's son as a wedding present in 1889.
