So why the hell wasn’t lumber considered an “essential” business during the pandemic?

Lowe's has been better than home depot on wood prices. I did pay $71 something a sheet for 3/4 plywood and $8 something per 2x4 today. Crazy and they were stacked with wood. Although the plywood was slim pickings.

Lowes is $10 cheaper on a 2x6 x16' treated.
