I was in San Antonio Texas when the first In & Out opened there, and it was just like you described.
Long lines and cops directing traffic for the first 6 months.
After 6 months most of the local folks went back to Whataburger, and you could drive right up to the order kiosk.

The Texas whataburger folks are high AF if they think that crap is better. It's okay after a day of racing in the heat and you haven't eaten in 10 hours but it's okay at best.

Besides their beloved whataburger is headquartered in shitcago now.

IN-N-OUT simultaneously opened their first Texas locations in Plano and Allen about eight years ago. The drive in line went down the street three or four blocks for at least two months. Going in the store was like pushing through the crowd of teenage girls at a Taylor Swift concert.

Well it’s incredible how well a company can do by selling very average burgers. Good on them. They really do have an amazing business plan 👍
Their business plan is simple. The company is now run by the founder’s granddaughter, Lynsi Synder. It is a privately held company with no franchises. They have not changed their menu and keep it simple. You can get lunch for six bucks with fresh ingredients served by clean cut young people who start at 14 bucks an hour. They can advance to store manager and make six figures. It’s the only fast food hamburger I will eat.

Lived in Hong Kong in ‘12. To maintain their intellectual property rights in Asia, In-N-Out would open a temporary store-front operation for a weekend every few years. Must have been over 2,000 people in line, including my 12 and 14 year old kids, and me. Waited about an hour before we bailed. They ran out of burgers shortly thereafter.

Their reputation is world wide.

I live in CO, I’m a fan and am happy.

I love in&out but wouldn’t sit in line like that.
If I see the light be coming out of the lot and into the street I’ll go right across the street to Farmer Boys.
I have long thought the only way In & Out could make it better was to offer bacon, and or green chili👍

In n out to me is below average. Even with a 3x3 I can't taste the meat, I only taste the mustard cheese and pickles.

The one thing I would say In-N-Out Burger has been very good at is consistency and taste from location to location.

Most other chain burger joints I have found consistency to be nonexistent. Some are excellent and others are dog shit.

I can’t believe there’s such emotion over hamburgers. 😂

Maybe try it without mustard, pickles and cheese? 😁
Seriously, ask them for the 3 patties and maybe 2 slices of cheese.
One of the great thing about In n Out is you can order however you want, and they always get it right, 99.9%. Plus the customer service is consistently better than anywhere else.
Usually the line is very long, but it moves fast compared to anywhere else with the same number of cars. Even still, sometimes it is too long and I won’t wait. But there is a reason why it’s so long.

To me the meats flavor is just bland. Kinda like the old Wendy's commercials.

Wheres the beef?

Their employees scare me. They are all just too damn happy all the time and every location is the same.
I keep expecting them to break out in a song and dance routine at any moment. [emoji1]

Same deal at Dutch Bros. They ask too many personal questions when all I want is my freaking coffee.

Daughter lives in Colorado Springs and the line was four hours. She's holding off for a few weeks...
I used to send her a gift card every year for her birthday just to yank her chain.

In and out was around the corner from high school, would buzz over and get lunch, NOT AN OPEN CAMPUS, either. Back in the 80's. Main st. Hesperia. Probably ate at 50+ locations around so cal. From Kearny Mesa to Buttonwillow, Phoenix, Havasu, Prescott, Kingman and Laughlin. Same quality everywhere. Is there better? Yes. With truck parking? Not really. The French fries were actually potatoes just minutes ago...Mc D's were made months ago, lol... and fuck that.

We (the wife and I) would get In and out, Laughlin, launch the boat, buzz up to Davis dam, float and enjoy fresh burgers and fries on the water.

I just might like In And Out.

My buddy owns the bakery business that provides their buns for decades. His comments about them as a client are awesome.
Very true. A family friend has been the framing contractor for them for close to 20 years. He’s damn near built most of their stores. He has nothing but awesome things to say about their relationship.

Just opened Two New Locations One in Aurora, Colorado and the other in Colorado Springs. The lines and wait times were between 12-14 Hours and Police were called because of massive traffic jams. This is all without advance advertising, because of the expected crowds. Word of mouth spread quickly after the land was purchased.
The Company plans 7 more Locations in Colorado. What a Company and business plan. I have heard several stories they Promote from within and a young Boy or Gal that starts early and stays with the Company Life is Good!!

I've mentioned this before but long ago we had a neighbor that managed 2 locations. Back then they were working managers with long hours. Manager was in the workstation rotation. Dunno about now.

The Snyders told him if he stuck with them he'll do better than any college education would produce for him. He did and did well. Conscientious and motivated.

He and his wife were so envious of us moving away from a crowded apt building to a $48K house I bought with $O down VA loan. It was their dream to do the same. Two of the most fantastic, genuine people I've ever known.

Back then if you ordered a double double they treated you like a Kennedy. You were someone important.;)

I like them. But wouldn't wait more then 10 minutes for them. I skipped the one in Oregon off the I5 because the line was too long. The one in Redding wasn't very busy, ate there and it was good. Hope they open more along the I5 in Washington, Oregon and California. I like driving to Vegas and LA from here. They are the best food on that route. Ok in Corning there is an Indian casino that has an awesome buffet. But for fast service In-N-Out is the best value on that drive.

Both of my kids worked for them through High school and college. They work with the employees school and personnel schedules. My father in law retired from the original warehouse, loved working there.

You fuckers got me hungry I am going at 1030😁

I have family friends in SD and their kids grew up knowing that I am always willing to go to In-N-Out. It has turned into a little game of going first thing in the morning the day I get into town. When little one of kids asked why we were going so early. I told them I want to be customer #1. After that is was always “uncle Tim are we going to In-N-Out to get #1? Kids are in college now and one of them sent me a #1 ticket. However it was in the middle of the day and paid by someone else.

The #1 ticket has been elusive. LOL

For all the haters, here is why In & Out does so well:

They get your order right, every single time.

When it's busy, they send people out to the drive-through line to actually take your order, not just guess what you're trying to order through some shitty ass 1985 technology speaker.

When I ask for Chili Peppers, salt, and pepper, they give me three (or more) salt and peppers, and ask me how many Chilis I want.

And every single time I get that brown box, it's correct, and I can enjoy my lunch without wanting to strangle some douchebag fast food employee that only gave me one packet of hot sauce when I asked for a bunch.

And one more thing.... when you order special stuff, they don't pretend like they don't know what you're talking about and make you repeat it. They know what the fuck you are ordering, and again, they get it right.

If you really don't like the food, then that's fine. But at least you know you're going to get what you order, and not have to go park and walk inside the restaurant to pick up what they "forgot" to put in the bag.

Know a guy who worked there all through college at UCI... says super clean operation and they actually paid well to college kids.

These threads always make me laugh.

It’s great for a $3 burger.

We’re not talking about Michelin Star fine dining fer chrissakes.

Waiting in a long-ass line for a $3 burger is ridiculous.

Exactly what I was going to say. It's not that they're fantastic burgers & fries, it's that they're reliably good food & service & you get what you expected almost all the time.

In Canada my favorite fast food burger is a bacon cheeseburger from Fatburger. Its pricey, but very good. Bonus they have a liquor license and serve, beer, wine and mixed drinks.

When I Googled In and Out today to find how many locations they had, ( about 340 as of last year) I saw a link titled, Does In and Out really have the worlds worst Fries? 😁
