My "buddy" Regor and I don't see eye to eye on what a Republican or a RINO is.

I contend that Trump is a man that is not a Republican but ran as one.

No different than Bernie is a Socialist that is listed as an Independent but ran for President as a Democrat.

Found an interesting piece in Newsweek which looks at this subject. I am not a Newsweek fan but the timeline does jive with my recollections.

OSHUA ROBERTS/REUTERS

President Donald Trump delivered a stunning rebuke to Republican leaders Wednesday when he opted to side with the Democrats' plan for a short-term increase in the debt ceiling. In doing so, he returned to the forefront a question that repeatedly surfaced during his campaign for the White House: Is Trump truly a Republican?

It is a question Republicans have been asking both privately and publicly for some time. Indeed, one notable critic, Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, has even written a book about it, titled: Conscience of a Conservative: A Rejection of Destructive Politics and a Return to Principle.

During the 2016 campaign, one of Trump’s chief GOP rivals, Jeb Bush, leveled the accusation that “Mr. Trump doesn’t have a proven conservative record. He was a Democrat longer in the last decade than he was a Republican.”

There is, indeed, some truth to Bush’s contention. Trump’s political allegiance has flipped repeatedly during his time in the public eye.

In 1987, the year his famed book The Art of the Deal was released, Trump registered as a Republican in New York, according to Politifact. The following year, he even floated the idea of running for the party's presidential nomination. Yet, despite his stated allegiance to the GOP, Trump donated more money to Democrats than Republicans between 1989 and 2009.

Further demonstrating his political promiscuity, Trump turned his back on both major parties in 1989 by registering as an independent. In 2000, he mounted his first actual run for president, as a candidate for the Reform Party. Despite an early withdrawal from the contest, he won the party’s primary in California.

Trump’s allegiance switched again in 2001, when he registered as a Democrat. Speaking in 2004, Trump shed some light on his rationale.

“In many cases, I probably identify more as Democrat,” Trump said in an interview with CNN. “It just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans. Now, it shouldn't be that way. But if you go back, I mean it just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats.... But certainly we had some very good economies under Democrats, as well as Republicans. But we've had some pretty bad disasters under the Republicans.”

Trump has previously voiced support for some traditionally liberal policies, too. In his 2000 book The America We Deserve, Trump advocated for a policy even many Democrats have failed to back.

“We must have universal health care,” he wrote. “I'm a conservative on most issues but a liberal on this one. We should not hear so many stories of families ruined by health care expenses.”

But before long, Trump was turning once again. In 2009, less than a year after Barack Obama’s election win, he had switched back to the Republican Party. That would last for just two years, however, before the real-estate magnate registered as an independent in order to leave his options open for a third-party run in the 2012 election. As it turned out, Trump returned to the GOP fold just a few months later and endorsed Republican candidate Mitt Romney in his losing battle against Obama.

Since that time, Trump has been a reliable and prolific donator to the GOP. He has not, though, been a reliable follower of the party line. During the 2016 campaign, he frequently launched vociferous attacks against his Republican primary opponents, the Republican leadership and past Republican presidents. He also refused to rule out running as an independent if he failed to secure the Republican nomination.

Republicans would swallow their unease about Trump after he unexpectedly won them back control of the White House. But now, after weeks of increasing criticism of the Republican leadership and vulnerable 2018 incumbents such as Senators Jeff Flake and Dean Heller, Trump is flirting with Democrats in a way many in the GOP always feared.

You can't label Trump as anything except a.........................pain in the establishment's ass.

Never in our history have we had a President face more opposition than what Trump has and it will take not only his Presidency, but many more to right this ship. We sent him to that shit hole to shake it up and that he's done.

This little "two-party system" wink wink status quo has failed the people.

I'll judge the Don at the end of four years and then again after another four. :D

It doesn't matter to me. As long as he delivers on illegal immigrants, the wall, repeal of Obama administration regulations, and support for business via tax relief and other methods, he'll have my support.

Oh, and one I forgot. Investigation and prosecution of Bill and Hillary Clinton for running a $2B pay to play scheme.

After the last 20 years i'm not even sure what a real Republican looks like....
And beyond the Party, it has to be ascertained whether Conservative or Liberal and drill that down on the topic/issue the distinction applies to.

I've come to a fairly strong opinion that the more our society tries to pigeon hole everything and everyone, the more the differences are accentuated.

The 2 party system has become a game to be won, more than a process to elect the most qualified person(s) to deal with a huge variety of issues. Our politicians bullshit us at best, and lie to us at worst, to gain office. From that point on it's become second nature to them to do as the the party dictates more so than what is right for those whom elected them. Hard to find Congressional members that honestly act autonomous to the Party.

If I had to pick between the two, I'd say democrat. He says things to play to a conservative base but his actions have done little to support it.

I think he is basically an independent but no independent would ever win so he sided with the Republicans and won. His stance on various things range across the board and could be viewed Dem or Rep as many "soft" democratic or "soft" republican presidents have done in the past. I've said from the beginning he SHOULD have been the president to bring the most bi-partisanship ever since his stance on various things could be viewed as favorable to both sides. Instead the whole fuckin thing is a witch hunt and monkey fuck because liberals just detest him. Oh well, 3 more years and they'll get their shot again. Get Opera primed and we'll see Trump do his second term :D

Great article on how the circus continues to be all that's covered while shit is getting done unnoticed behind the scenes...The old bait and switch.

Good read written by a self proclaimed trump hater.

That's the thing, Hillary evokes the same response from the conservatives in the PRF. He won on the "anyone but Hillary" ticket.

I absolutely agree with this. I think that was definitely a portion of his win. But in the end, take away all the media circus and he's actually doing a good job.

include some liberals in that as well. My Parents, lifelong Dems, union officers etc, gritted their teeth and voted for Trump as the lessor of two evils. They just saw Hillary as too corrupt. They still don't like Trump much, but admit he's doing more good than they expected and would likely vote for him again.

No, of course not. He made it clear from the beginning that the only way he could win was to run as a Republican since Independents just don't cut it & tards were already taken.

Regardless of who said what, it does illustrate the opinions of the majority that run for office.

That debate was beaten to death throughout the O years.......

It's been said in a way that explains a lot. And can go either direction......
"......I never said that low-information voters are stupid. I just said they don't know what they think they know. They are prisoners to the media, which has dumbed them down. Low-information voters can be doctors. Low-information voters can be scientists. They can be among all walks of life. It has nothing to do with IQ. It has to do with what they don't know because of their media sources. Low-information voters are clearly people that don't have all the information available to make a voting choice. That's all they are. And they're all over the place. And most of them do vote Democrat. Most of them did vote for Obama. It's not a comment on their intelligence. It's not that they're stupid or don't understand the issues. They just haven't had it all explained to them."

If he says that about Republicans 20 years ago in public, wonder what he says about Dems in private. Probably not complimentary, but I'm sure they are dumb enough to think it is.

SD, well if that image is Correct... then you must be voting for TRUMP in 3 years... cause our economy is the BEST its been in many years...

it's OK.....we welcome EVERYONE!!! Jump on the Trump Train.....
I've always voted for which candidate I felt was better. I don't subscribe to a "Party", like many of us labeled "Tards". It's not your fault you can't understand this. I know how quickly the Fab 5ers ram the Kool Aid stick down your gizzards as soon as you enter the P&G. So with that if your Game Show Host does half of what Nobel Peace prize winning, 2 Term President of the United States Barrack Obama did for the economy I might give him my vote?:)
