Love these threads.
@RiverDave - make sure you wake you early and get into Yellowstone before traffic becomes a PIA @ gate and on main roads! We were inside the park by 7am each day and most days had breakfast burritos that we warmed in the engine bay while driving from RV to stop 1.

if you go through Jackson, don't miss the gunfight. It is starting up again as of today.
My friends 'set me up' and didn't tell me why we were lingering around, and guys started arguing and they draw guns and...I nearly ...well...you know.
<edit> the spectacle did not seem staged at all, this was back in the early 90's. luckily others were in the know and calm, so I watched calmly but in awe<edit>

Also, Pinky G's for Pizza. It is AWESOME.
lastly, the million dollar cowboy bar. On that same trip, we are in $M cowboy bar (before our lingering session) and in from outside, in silhouette, walks a guy with sidearm in full chaps and duster, like 6'4"

Kinda shitty pics but I just woke up and haven’t moved 10’ from the motorhome yet.. between all the driving and amusement park etc I was pretty worn out. The weather was literally freezing last night and cold AF this am (we didn’t bring a lot of cold weather gear) so today was sleep in bed lazy day.. kids had donuts and milk for breakfast.. lol

Valley View RV Park here’s where we are at

I’m gonna take a shower and go unload the TOAD and we are off just cruising around and seeing what’s what. We will plan our next 3-5 days here today.

open to suggestions from the experts!

What a great birthday! I am so glad the kids are going to get to experience Yellowstone. It is an absolutely amazing place. I'm looking forward to getting to go again this summer, but we will be camping about 1.5 hours away for 6 weeks, so we plan to go a couple of times for day trips and get to actually do some hiking this time and skip the traditional tourist spots.

Both you and RD need to check out Yellowstone Lake when you're there. It's thirty miles long if memory serves. There is lookout point that has an absolutely amazing view. 👍

Kinna sucks you're so close to the best sand dunes in the nation, without any toys. Maybe they have something to rent? Might be worth a call or two.

I think this is a must see too?

that kind of F’s everything.
almost 100% of the things to see require walking/hiking. Our first trip was all the main places and we averaged 6 miles of walking a day.

I enjoyed the grand canyon of Yellowstone and upper and tower falls area (northeast side of Yellowstone).

areas we enjoyed the most
- Canyon Village
- Mammoth hot springs
- tower

Apparently there is a half marathon happening in Yellowstone this weekend, a friend of mine is running it.

I would prepare for potentially higher than usual crowds.

So against the advice of getting up early. We went over to west Yellowstone and I told Stacy “wel let’s just get the pass now so we don’t have to deal with it in the morning”. There was one car in front of us..

so then I asked the lady “what do ya think we could see real quick?” We entered the park at 2:30-3:00’ish?

we saw several hundred bison.. multiple times, herds far away. Individuals up close, and then herds really up close.. lol.
We saw so many Geysers that the kids said they don’t care if they ever see one again. We saw paint pots, and a whole bunch of stuff..

This is 5hours with no plan in Yellowstone

So apparently when you to old faithful around 5:00 pm on a Friday nobody is there.. lol

I went into the gift shop and asked the lady early am or evening? She said place is packed in the early am till the afternoon and the park empty’s out in the late afternoon.

FYI it’s 9:41 right now pm and it’s still light out. 😳 (These pics were taken earlier today.). Jist saying there’s no reason to rush leaving Yellowstone in the summer. We are sitting down for dinner right now at 9:40

This is where I parked at old faithful. I took a pic of old faithful, my parking spot and the lodge deal.. the parking lots we drove through to get to this one were huge and empty.

On the way home we saw Elk / Deer and my kids said if we say the word Bison one more time they won’t go back.. lol. We had a heard run past us for what seemed like 20 minutes.. it was one of the coolest things I have seen.

then we had another group a few miles later.. then another lol. You get the idea.

Apparently they all go home for dinner at around 8:00-8:30’ish? Not sure

So far everything has been amazing except the Three Bear restaurant.. I’d pass on that if I was you guys. Steak sucked / spaghetti sucked / potatoes sucked.. etc 🤨

Pretty stoked on our first day here though!
Dave, if you are in west Yellowstone and looking for steak and potatoes, head north to High Country Tavern, formerly Einos Tavern. It is on Hebgen Lake straight north of town, 191 to 287 west. When it was Eino's, you would pick a steak out of the cooler and she would heat up cheese potatoes while you grilled the steak and had a beer.

Since hiking is out, it would make a nice loop with plenty of scenery of Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake. You could keep heading west to 87, take that south to Island Park. Then come back over the continental divide by Two Top Mountain back to West Yellowstone.

That’s awesome. It wa smithing like that’s when we were there. Packed to the gills. We had to make reservations to have a seat at the bar. Would be awesome to have the place to yourselves like that.

No they won't. LoL

Mine don't. If I didn't have the pics, they would have never known they were there! I went as a kid and don't remember a single thing about it. 😝

My kids DO remember the Glamis trips though. They were a bit older by then. Seems like mine don't remember much before 10?

Take lots of pics!!!

The bison thing is quite terrifying on a bike…..if you listen closely you can hear me shitting my pants

plus if a Buffalo ends your life while on a Harley you reach legend status. Lol

Oh boy.... these things.... I was in Two Harbors on Catalina Island and one came down from hill to get soaked by a water sprinkler by the bar. Some teenage boy got a bit too close for a pic and got gored and medi vac outta there. Heard they get a bit testy when cubs are around. I was maybe 70' from it and man was it a big .... like a freight train.

is that the grand prismatic pool? it is amazing.
Pictures are great memory pokers, but never do the real thing justice...same with yellowstone falls and the canyon...
you are so lucky you got to do this.
don't you find it weird to think you are strolling around on a 43x28mi dormant volcano?

Dave, we did the exact same thing a couple of years ago when we went to Yellowstone. Hit the gate in the afternoon to get the pass and headed down the south loop to old faithful. Got stuck in the middle of a heard of Bison for about an hour. There is a bypass road called Firehole Canyon Rd along the road to Old Faithful that takes you to some amazing waterfalls in Firehole canyon. It was worth the detour to see that. After that bypass, we started looking for the other off the beaten path loops you could take. There are a couple of dirt back roads in the park that are open to travel which allowed us to see more of the park without the crowds. On our third day we hit the gate and headed straight to the south entrance that takes you to Grand Teton National park and into Jackson Hole WY. We started early and had lunch in Jackson Hole then headed back to West Yellowstone on the 22/33 rd out of Jackson. The 33 takes you all the way back to St Anthony's in Idaho, we took the 32 north and it kicked us out just south of West Yellowstone.

this was not the grand prismatic.. that’s on our list to do before we leave. The colors on these though were a lot brighter than come across in the pics

we have an app called “what’s ahead” that literally tells you all the cool shit coming up while you are driving as well as history etc..

We hit the fire hole bypass as well as the Geiser flats and some others.. Stacy got most the pics which I will have to get from her.

Today we skipped Yellowstone and went to the bear / wolf discovery had a great lunch and then jist went off roading for a few hours in the pathfinder out in west Yellowstone! Super relaxing day that was much needed after the non stop hustle of trying to cram too much into a vacation.

Couple pics from the bear wolf deal.. It’s cheap and you can see it all in 20-45 minutes.. educational for the kids and for a good cause.
They also have owls / hawks / eagles / otters etc..

This is the only pic I took of us offroad.. we went 10’ish miles or so out Stage Coach pass. Basically saw a dirt road and turned and then kept going until we had enough then turned left and headed back to the highway.
