Just a reminder to please put your phones down while driving. A kid was riding his bike this afternoon in front of our house and got hit by a car that was speeding through our neighborhood. Thankfully, he will be okay, but it was truly awful to try to comfort him as he cried for his Dad. Poor lil guy was in so much pain [emoji17] Our camera footage shows the car going about 40mph and didn't even attempt to slow down until after he threw the kid 6-8 feet. So disturbing to watch [emoji17][emoji20] Anyway, I'm guilty of using my phone while driving too, so this was a wakeup call for me as well... no more.

I'd be equally pissed about someone driving 40 m.p.h. through my neighborhood. Speaking as someone who has had a car drive through their house...if I see someone driving 40 I'm picking up a rock or whatever is nearby and chucking it at them. Hopefully the boy will be ok and you will be too...that kind of stuff is hard to unsee.

Couldn’t agree more DB. We have a rule in our household that goes out to all of our family. No texting or talking on the phone while driving with our kids in the car. My wife and I won’t use the phone while driving with or without passengers either. It’s either hands free, or we pull over. I’ve seen way too many deaths from phone use while driving.

Thanks Greg, I appreciate it. I am definitely shaken up by everything that happened. Just thankful for the news that he will be okay. I guess the guy driving got what was coming to him by being reckless.

...you should add to that rule to include "while sharing the road with others"

On a side note, I wonder how much the NAV systems contribute to accidents. I don't own a vehicle new enough to have one, so I typically just bring up whatever on my phone on a dash mount but find that it still takes my eyes off the road for longer than I'm comfortable with, so I pull over a lot to see where I'm at if its somewhere unfamiliar. I tried texting a few times years ago when I got my smartphone, but gave up long before they made a law against it because I couldn't hit the right buttons. Maybe these are folks that learned to drive with a phone in their hand so they don't know any other way?

The real problem is that new phone tech turns everyone into zombies. I see 40-70+ year olds texting, reading texts, facebooking, wtf else while driving constantly.

Don't even start about new teen drivers...I am firmly convinced that everyone is paying off the DVM tester.

Point is that no one is taught that they are in control of a deadly 3000lb+ missile and that their ONLY task is to CONTROL IT.

You are not to eat/read/text/talk on the phone/ play games or WHATEVER is DISTRACTING YOU.

Makes me furious that people do not take that responsibility seriously.

IMO there needs to be extreme punishment for anyone caught using their phone while driving. Like loose your license for 2 years first offense. Second is 5 years. 3rd permanently revoked.

THIS!!!

My wife gets mad because I'm always saying this in the car.

DRIVE THE DAMN CAR!!!! That's it!!

It's not time to talk, text, read, watch porn like I saw some dude doing the other day, shave makeup or whatever else.

Society uses time in the car to do everything but drive the car!!!

Hopefully the kiddo makes a full recovery. Shitty to be playing around outside in your neighborhood, and this happens.

I get people speeding down our street all the time..... we have a little land between all neighbors, so some people think they found a "shortcut", but really, this is our neighborhood. Not to mention the streets are a zoo out there! I always see people driving erratic / crazy all the time... and I only commute a few miles to and from work.

People are paying less attention to the road and the new cars are reinforcing that behavior making it easier for them to pay less attention by "alerting" them when a car is slowing down or correcting the steering wheel when drifting from lane to lane . I can not wait for self driving cars because distracted driving isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Hopefully the kid makes a full recovery. My mom always told me to look 3 times before crossing the road and that was before texting and driving was a thing.

More than once I've seen contractors in vans with a phone on a shoulder, taking a note, and driving with their knee.....It's not one group or age doing this stuff, it's everybody.

My contractor was on the phone and completely cut off some dude pulling up to my jobsite.

Dude pulled up behind contractor and got out of the car. He would have given Shaq a run for his money...my contractor is a 5’3” Hispanic dude, was apologizing profusely and just hoping he didn’t get his ass beat.

The rest of us thought it was hilarious [emoji1787]

I say almost everyday, "People get behind the wheel and do everything except concentrate on driving." It's crazy. Many times I will be 2,3 or 4 cars back at a red light with 2 lanes going the same way. The light turns green and no one goes. I honk my horn and all these idiots heads go from looking down to looking up. "I see idiots driving everywhere!!!"

Cheers, Steve

So am I the only one wondering why the video hasn’t been posted yet?
Probably nobody needs to or wants to see a video of a kid being hit by a car. WTF is wrong with you?

Here's a fun one (nobody hurt) from the other day here in Long Beach...hope it gets your rocks off....

Should probably consider doing the same to this thread. Video of a man actually doing.

You're upset by a post that contains a link one has to intentionally click to go to a page where they then have to click a video to watch a video of a daredevil crashing 200 yards away, but you wanted a video of a child being hit by a speeding car and flung like a ragdoll into the air to be posted directly on here?

Yeah, okay...

I’m not upset. You’re upset. I’d explain why you’re upset but then I’m sure you’d just ban me. ;)

You explained why you didn’t post it and that’s fine. My comment was like a “this thread is worthless without pics” comment but your reply to my upset-ness shows a little...let’s say, hypocrisy as I don’t see a difference and think the the loss of a life is much worse.

You should check the thread again. It’s posted directly in the thread so that argument is gone.

Saw two accidents last week.. Girl was getting on the 5 freeway @ Manchester. Didn't even stop [on her own] before she plowed into the stopped car in front of her... lane right next to me... saw the whole thing. When she rear ended the white BMW, I saw her phone fly out of her hand and smack her windshield.

Second one, 5 south @ Carlsbad Village Drive. Guy in a big black lifted jeep moved out of his lane right into the side of a little Honda Civic.

People have enough trouble with the basic coordination to walk and chew gum at the same time... let alone driving.

Yesterday I was driving on the 60 MPH four lane divided highway going to my rental property, and a car going about 40 swerved from the right lane into my path. I switched lanes and drove around him, and could see he was texting. There were also three kids in the car.

About a mile later, back in the left lane, I stopped at a red light and he pulled up beside me, and he was still texting. I rolled down the passenger side window and honked, and he rolled down his window.

Even though there were kids in the car, I was pissed. He was risking their lives and that of others.

So...I proceeded to give him a loud MFing. It pissed me off even more when I saw he was over 40. What an irresponsible idiot, texting while driving like a brainless 17 year old girl.

Here are some stories and statistics on texting while driving:

TEXTING AND DRIVING CRASHES FACTS AND STATISTICS

FEBRUARY 19, 2019 • TEENDRIVEADMIN
Texting while driving is more of a problem now than ever, as 69 percent of U.S. drivers between the ages of 18 and 64 admitted to using their cell phone while driving during the previous month. Since texting increases the likelihood of a crash by 23 times, it’s a habit that must be stopped, across age groups and geographic locations alike.

Below, learn about some of the most astounding horror stories involving texting and driving, understand the texting and driving crashes facts and statistics surrounding this issue, and gain insight into how you can stop your teen from participating in this dangerous practice.

Texting And Driving Horror Stories

While it’s easy to turn a blind eye to the horror stories surrounding texting and driving, the truth remains: these horrors could happen to anyone. The following stories are capable of rocking any driver to their core, and they should be enough to deter any driver from daring to glance at their phone as they sit behind the wheel ever again.

Story #1: Natasha Boggs
In May of 2017, Ohio woman Natasha Boggs, 25, killed two 14-year-old girls and severely injured a 15-year-old boy when she was texting and driving. Boggs drove over the marked lanes on the side of the road and hit the teens. The driver pleaded guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter, vehicular assault, and attempted tampering with evidence.

Story #2: Driver Killed 13 In Texting And Driving Crash

A driver of a pickup truck killed a whopping 13 individuals in a Texas crash in the spring of 2017. 20-year-old Jack Dillon Young was behind the wheel of his truck and was texting while driving, causing him to cross the center line several times. Ultimately, Young’s negligence led to a crash with a mini-bus, killing 12 passengers on the site of the crash and leaving one to perish after being transported to the nearest hospital.

Story #3: Keith Furne

In this final story, Keith Furne played a part in setting the example that a phone can be considered a deadly weapon. While behind the wheel in 2016, Furne was texting and smashed his car into the back of another vehicle. This crash resulted in the death of two teenagers and severe injuries of another. Two others were in the car and were injured, however they each made a full recovery. As a result of this crash, Furne has been sentenced to ten years in jail.

Besides the heartbreaking and untimely deaths that these stories have in common, they also share the fact that these deaths were caused by texting and driving, making them completely preventable.

Texting And Driving Facts And Statistics

As if the above-listed stories weren’t enough to inspire fear around texting and driving, the below-listed facts will really drive the point home:
  • 40 percent of teens state that they’ve been in the car with a driver who used a cell phone in a way that put them in some kind of danger.
  • While the maximum amount of time a driver can safely divert their attention from the road from is two seconds, it takes a driver five seconds – on average – to send a text message.
  • It only takes three seconds for a crash to occur after a driver becomes distracted by their cell phone or anything else.
  • The United States Department of Transportation reported the cell phones are involved in a whopping 1.6 million auto crashes each year, causing half a million injuries and prompting 6,000 deaths annually.
  • Texting while driving is even more dangerous than driving while under the influence of alcohol. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute reports that texting while driving is six times more likely to cause a crash than intoxication. Someone texting while driving mimics the driving ability of someone who consumed four beers in an hour.
  • 26 percent of all motor vehicle crashes are related to the use of cell phones.
  • Each day, 11 teens die in crashes caused by texting and driving.
  • 2.35 million people in the US are injured or disabled by car crashes every year. More than 330,000 of these crashes that cause severe injury are caused by texting and driving.

To be fair to the Jeep guy...it’s kinda hard to keep lifted jeeps pointed in a straight line sometimes.

I read this more as a comment on our current societal trend of recording everything and plastering it all over the internet, then CC actually wanting to see a child get hit by a car. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong?

Actually you’re right. Remember when this site had the emoji of “this thread is worthless without pics”? Guess that was a pretty douche emoji. lol
