So my son comes outside into the garage to tell me that he lost $5 last night at his Baseball game to a friend from his class that was on the opposite team. They are in 4th grade by the way. I just laughed and said "How did it feel to lose 5 bucks?" He said it sucks and I said then don't bet on things like that anymore ok? Left it at that, quick easy lesson I thought.

I go inside and the wife it livid with him about it and pissed I laughed it off. How would you handle the situation?

My son's team sucks btw and the other team was one of the better teams in the league....he needs to learn to make bets he can win :)

I would make sure he doesn't bet again. Kids need to know the meaning of $1, and how hard it is to work for it.

Make sure he understands he needs to pay up out of his own kiddie.

Vegas is a good example of betting.
Explain to him that in the history of the town - no one has ever seen a brinks truck bringing money into a casino.

I was taught to pay your debts. So pay up and hopefully he learned a lesson at a young age , life is about learning.

Think you handled jus fine. , with respect, your wife a little over board , but we all know how moms are.

You handled it right. Maybe some reinforcement later when hehe wants something , ask him if he wishes he still had that 5 bucks. II remember betting as a kid betting , don't think I ever paid up though, hard to get your hands on a million bucks when your 10. I still bet occasionally ,only with the wife lol.

I think you handled it right, maybe just a little more talk about the bad side of gambling and where it could take you and being responsible with your money when it comes to gambling.

Wait til your kid starts paying stupid money for stupid shit at school...lol. Got one son that paid $20 for a Fidget Spinner, the other son got caught selling Juul pods for $10 each. Smart of my one kid to be selling stupid shit to the stupid kids but my stupid kid got caught. It's a freakin' underground mafia in schools around my area. Hell, one of my kids was selling Snickers candy bars at school for $2 a piece.

On the other hand, one of my kids bought some rare Pokemon cards for cheap, I personally reached out to the Dad and reversed that transaction. Just hoping for some future karma on that deal.

I'd venture to say that your kid probably accepted a challenge rather than making an honest bet. A dare so to speak....

Yup, my first question would have been "where'd you get the $5?"

Let your son know that it may seem harmless but gambling can become an addiction...

My Mom had a gambling addiction till the day she died. Back in the day she would pull us out of school so she could go to the track. To keep our attention she would ask us what number we would like for the next race and make a small bet for us.

I started playing football cards when I was in the 3rd grade how is that possible you ask??? My parents had a friend (George) back in the 60's - 70's that owned a print shop. I saw him on the six o clock news one night. Damn George was pulling in over 500k every weekend back in the early 70's out of that little print shop.

I remember as a kid making a $5 bet with a neighbor (Jens List) on the 74 Notre Dame USC football game. I took Notre Dame and was looking pretty good at half time. Jens didn't seemed worried (he was a business owner) he said SC would come back and win the game and they did. When I went to give Jens his money he said he just wanted to give me a taste of losing and later gave me my $5 bucks back. Jens and his Double Bar $ Ranch later became a household name at Los Alamitos Race Track.

Before I new it I was hooked on betting and had an addiction that I found out is hard to break.

I eventually found something bigger, the stock market. Money was easy to make during the late 90's and early 2000's, It was a crazy time. My biggest one day payday in the market was $20k on a stock called Rambus. I bought 20k in shares before the close of the market and the stock doubled in after hours trading and sold the next morning. Then I got into a bind buying stocks on margin, at one time I had over 50k on margin. Then all of a sudden the bubble burst. My all time biggest loss was with a company called Exodus and that wasn't the only loser I ended up with. Imagine losing your life savings and then try to figure out how your going to tell your wife your broke. Outside of having a 401k I haven't bought a stock since...

Every decision you make in life is a gamble of some sort or another. Might as well teach him how to do it and understand when the odds are in his favor.

A few months back I had lotto tickets to check, so went into the separate from the store Walmart lotto center. A bunch of kids, maybe 10 years old in playing scratch and win tickets. They took up the machine to check the tickets. I said something to the old guy behind the counter, kids are not supposed to play lotto tickets. He said: Its ok! I ended up complaining to Walmart who couldn't do anything because they rent the lotto center space. So we complained to the lotto commission.................. Id be mad if a store was letting your kid play lotto tickets. Gambling amongst kids teaches valuable life lessons, its like playing cops and robbers.

Haha ! No kidding right.

At that age my "income" was divided into 4 chunks - all grueling.

" allowance" worked its way from 5 -20 bones a week- then back down to 0 when I earned money (not fair i cried - "grow up" I heard back) .
Summer earnings- lawn mowing in summer, de-tasseling corn, splitting and stacking wood 25-30 bones a cord. (a real cord not some namby pamby city boy " face cord")
Winter earnings - shoveling /blowing snow
Special job - driving fence posts on farm type stuff

I worked too hard to gamble it away.

Simple. Show him a picture of the Las Vegas Strip. Gambling is never a good thing. Gambling on sports is the worst.

BTW i gamble when in vegas...

I think you handled it right....I would 100% make sure he paid up and than have a talk that betting is gambling and can be fun and a terrible idea at the same time.

My son and I play around and we will bet $1 when watching football or basketball. I win like 75% of the time because he doesn't know shit yet and always picks the team that is currently winning...haha (I always sneak his $$$ back into his piggy bank)

He has gotten to the point where he absolutely knows what a dollar is and usually doesn't like to bet anymore...lol (I tried to get him to bet the OKC Utah basketball game the other night when OKC was up by 10 but he passed....I knew Utah was going to smoke them;):D)

I think your approach of calmly telling your son not to bet on things like that anymore is a good one. It's important to teach children about responsible decision-making and the potential consequences of their actions, including gambling. Maybe you can also use this as an opportunity to talk to your son about the risks of gambling and why it's not a good habit to get into.

My son (11) loves playing LCR, over New Years we were at Ocotillo RV Resort and had a game going with about 35 people and 1 guy thru $100 in the pot for the hell of it. Seth was one of the last 3 that were battling, then down to 2, he had $3 to the other $1 well he ended up losing. He wasn't happy, but only to us, because "he was so close to winning $205" I told him yea but you only lost $3 to have an hour or so of fun with friends.

Indian Casinos were 18 to gamble (may still be) and on most the cruise ships they could drink and gamble at 18 Y.O. too.
Our girls got bored with the BF's gambling.
It's all they ever wanted to do and finally the girls had enough.

If he didn’t like losing $5 he understands the meaning of a dollar. Hopefully losing early teaches him wether gambling is for him or not, I know quite a few adults who love it.
I asked a guy a work how his day at the track was and he said “you know it’s a bad day when you win ten grand on a race and still lose money”. He’s worth hundreds of millions to put it into perspective.

“ i’ll bet you all my money you’re wrong, I didn’t touch it!”
-my 8 year old son

“sure you want to make that bet”?
-me

“yes, you’re wrong!”
-son

“here is the security video of you breaking it, let’s go collect all your money”
- me

Sometimes losing is the best lesson. I took his life savings $18 because he lied and then bet on his lie.

IMO - all the talk of “gambling problem” on this simple $5 bet….. is silly… he lost. That pretty much will squash any other betting. Now if he won, that would be a slight difference. As it could create more bets. I would simply keep the conversation open and none confrontation. So he would be willing to bring up any other bets.

I wouldn’t get into the life of gambling family inheritance away with a 4th grader.

If he doesn't learn how to bet now you can wait till he's a little older and then tell him to start betting Blow Job's. Shouldn't take him very long to figure out what king of gambler he wants to be. :D

That’s funny stuff.

Along those lines, my grandson’s junior high (he’s in seventh grade) gave away bananas one day while he happened to be on a break, so he grabbed a bunch. He then got busted for selling them to kids who were unaware of the giveaway. His parents handled it, and I don’t think he’ll try to pull anything like that again. Though I agree he shouldn’t cross moral lines, I’m also thinking he’s a natural entrepreneur. 😂

Hell, I went from selling greeting cards door-to-door at about 10 years old (behind my parents’ backs), to delivering newspapers at 12, to selling weed in high school (yeah, I was a little shit). But I like to think it was just my entrepreneurial nature coming through. I went on to operate a legitimate wholesale business a few years after graduating from high school, ultimately selling it to a corporate entity (didn’t make us rich, but we’re more than comfortable). I’m hoping my grandson will skip the weed part and move directly to the legit business.

By the way, you did good on the Pokémon deal. 👍

I see it is an old post, but brings back some good memories. My Father has been gone for 18 years. As a young kid my Father paid me to do some work around our gas station. He let me play cards with his friends. I lost my money. He always laughed and said it was a good lesson that I cried when I lost my money. Played a lot of cards with my friends and lost a couple dollars for entertainment. But refuse to gamble at the Indians casinos and donate my hard earned money to them. Yep, my Father was a pretty smart guy.

Mid 90's walking thru some casino in Laughlin (headed back home from Powell) and my lil brother maybe 8yrs old found a quarter. Dad decided it might be a good life lesson, and offered to put it in one of the slot machines for him... Gambling takes your money yadda yadda yadda.

Damn thing hit for like $50!

My best friend and his boss had a problem with gambling for a while. One Friday they left Corona for Laughlin. Arrived around dinner time and started in gambling right away. They both lost so much money they couldn't afford a room and had to make the drive back home the same night. For years my buddy was married to a girl who dealt cards in Elsinore. Heck, he was sitting in on the family poker games when he was very young, and so that may have had something to do with his later struggles with gambling.
Now he gets that rush from day trading, but over time he has gotten very good at that.

I’d get him a Robinhood app, and let him really learn the in’s and out’s of gambling. 😛
