Laptop data recovery in OC! HELP!

All,

I have a laptop that went into some infinite "preparing to automatic repair loop"

I took it to a laptop repair shop and they took out the hard drive but couldn't extract the word documents I needed. It even froze up his computer.

He said I would need to take it to a data recovery specialists.

Does anyone know a reputable one?

I called one and they said minimum starting $400 to maximum $1900. Of they can't extract no charge to me.
