My commute to work takes me past Bergeron's shop in Mesa and I saw what appeared to be a 26-28ft mod vp bare hull with fresh all white gel. Can anyone think of what this might be? I'll try to get a picture on my way home.

The 29 Cobra and the 26 Stoker are the only two big mod VPs I can think of. I was always curious how the cobra ran?

You probably saw a 26 stoker. There was one at pirates this weekend with twin outboards

Is anyone laying these up again? Or does it sound like someone doing a full restore?

You probably saw a restore. The one at pirates was red etc.

I’m sure you could get one laid up if you wanted, would take a little leg work though. Eliminator used to lay them up for Stoker

Leg work meaning Money, phone calls, visits to Shops, all of the above??

I would've just called Eliminator and see what it would take.. LOL

The 26 molds were destroyed years ago.

But after hearing this, I'm guessing you probably aren't gonna get a stoker.. LOL

Cobra makes a 29 Mod VP that looks 10 times better than the stoker anyways.

To your point, it will just take more calls and legwork for someone that wants one. :)

Stoker built a few 26 footers.

You said a large all-white Mod VP hull and this was the first one that popped into my head. Roarke Summerford built a couple of these and then the molds went to Charger up in Canada. I don't know if they are still in use. A pretty rare bird so I doubt this was the hull you saw. It is a 20 ft mod tunnel...this one just happens to be owned by Joe Abellera. Nice river rocket!

You have been in one of the two they built? I have always wanted to go run one.

I don’t remember the exact number but I want to say it was 12 or 14were built. He was going to retool the deck and make it like a 224 deck but it never happened.

I have been in 2 different 26s . My family almost bought one way back when. And then I almost bought one years ago. I really hope to find one one day and restore it.

The one at Pirates this past weekend was a 22 with twins not a 26

That’s makes more sense normally when the 26 is on the water he posts pics on the stoker Facebook page.

Out of curiosity, what exactly makes a mod vp, a mod vp? Is it simply a v Hull with tunnels? Is a cheetah stiletto a mod vp, or just a tunnel?

In a nutshell it would be a v bottom with tunnels. The center sponson on a mod vp is lower than the outers. Where a cat the center sponson is higher than the outers

In the day APBA had a outboard class called V Pleasure thus VP. When tunnels came into play with center pod being the lowest part of bottom Mod VP class was born (modified v pleasure). The v class was obsolete from that point on.
Fred Bowden and I ran center pod Taylor tunnels (Taylor tunnel was splash of Sleek Craft Aristocrat) the year before Mod VP was officially a class, but was legal in VP due to the center bottom being lowest point.
This is where the term Mod VP comes from.

I wonder if this is Dave Poole's boat out of IL? A few years ago (2013) I had my eye on one for sale on screamandfly and Eric Colby the magazine writer bought it before I got home from a work trip. I believe Eric's now has twin 2.5's on it, and if he still has it, it resides in New England. That is where it was for sale previously as well. After speaking with Dave Poole when I was interested in buying the NE boat, he had a lot of praise for how rough of water it would handle. What attracted me to it was the ModVP factor, interior size, as well as the graphics. Since I didn't end up with the Stoker, I turned my quest to find a 23 Daytona, and that led me to the StressEliminator.

In 1984, I rode with John Stoker in a 26 a couple of day prior to the Enduro. Boat had twin 2.6 Evinrude cross flows, engines were not mounted vertical, they were canted inward so the gearcases met the outer edges of the center pod, OMC's were to wide. Boat ran 91

I was with the crew at Cobra when the first 290 Venom was run. The boat featured an open bow with seats and built in coolers in the cuddy. Twin canopy cockpit looked fast just sitting on the water. The hull ran like a train on the rails, no bow rise getting on plane, smooth and felt great. Less than a dozen built would be my guess just before the market tanked at what maybe could of been a prime of the boating industry then.

Looks to me like it’s a 22 stoker. The 26 is a big bitch On the trailer. My guess is a 22 old deck not a 224.

I’ve always liked the look of them, any idea how they performed speed wise?

You would be correct sir...thank you for confirming my earlier post! This pic is my tunnel running in VP class pre dating Mod VP.

That boat is bad ass! I wonder why Cobra doesn’t make more of them.

The "windshield" area looks too angled back for a stoker. I'm guessing an Eliminator Edge.

I don't think that's a 22 in that pic. that trailer is way beefier than that of a 22. and the boat's taller
