Why does nobody run the original style baja bug front and rear steel fenders i think they look pretty good

Because the track width and wheelbase are typically drastically modified. In some cases as much as 8” added in length. Nothing would line up

If you’re building a little class 11 car, totally, that’s doable

Wheel base, width and tire size.

My white Baja has a 12" longer wheel base than a stock VW, and is approximately 18" wider, and 35" tires. I could never get any type of stock fender to fit.

My Class 11 car has completely stock fenders, and the maximum tire I can fit is a 7.00X15 which is about 28.5" tall, and the fenders need to massaged to keep them from rubbing too bad.

It’s only sheetmeal and money man. Anything is possible, and if you’re doing a tube chassis it wouldn’t be too wild.

i like all these new LS base long travel bugs out now just wish the body would look a little more at home with the wheel base

Never seen anyone stretch the body to get the wheel wells to match, but I've seen 4 door cars built, and I've seen bodies widened to get a little more room in them.

Stretching a body would be a major undertaking, you would be lengthening the doors, door windows, and quarter panels and windows. Then all of that would be custom glass, custom window regulators etc.... if you wanted to run glass.

Most guys at that point would be using a fiberglass body likely anyways. No ones really going to want to put 10-20k into metal work simply for aesthetics only to have it get thrashed the first time it ends up on its roof.

IF you wanted to go down this road, you'd be best off having someone 3d digitize the body, once its in the computer, you can mock up your stretch and dimensions. Have someone 3d print you some shell molds that you can use to lay up new fiberglass body panels. At least that way if you damage it, you can lay up some new panels.

I have never seen a stretched body bug other than the four seat Manx body. I'm not sure with the travel it would work putting the body closer to the wheels
I have been in a widened body bug. It was nice not to have my shoulders touching the door and passanger at the same time, plus it looks proportional to the wider track of long travel.

I'm assuming the bug body thing is to just get around smog laws in CA?

It is seriously awesome that these guys have figured out a way to make a business out of low volume "custom" molded composite parts. I love seeing businesses like this!

The glass body will be pretty cool. It looks like it's stretched a bit. I don't know if that's good or bad?

So random question, was he fabbing the parts and building the car, or was he just fabbing the parts for you?

Follow up, how far did he get into your build? And who did you move to?

any issues buying pre-fabbed parts from him?

I was toying with the idea of buying pre-fabbed bulkhead/arms/rear arms and cage, and just doing it myself. I've heard obviously his timelines are blown way out.

i would buy the tabzone kits before his stuff. theres other fab places that sell kits as well, i dont have the info handy, but they are on instagram.

Got ya, ya I’ll have to do some homework and see who all is making some kits.

I’d like to find something that has a track record so I don’t have to do a ton of geometry redesigns after I realize my initial plans were shit. At this stage in my life I get such little time to use my shit I want it to work well.

Let me clear this up…


Mosebilt is still building me a chassis. Per the invoice it was supposed to be started in June and take 60 days. Technically it isn’t even behind until Sept 1.

Please don’t bash Mosebilt until they have the opportunity to do as they promised. He could have it done on time, who knows.He has been extremely responsive to all my questions.

I will build whichever chassis is done first and sell the other. Shoot me a PM if you’re looking for one.

Motor is done. Pickup next week.

John is a good dude, and creative with what he builds, but I think he sometimes takes on a little more than he should. If he could focus his attention, and maintain a decent timeline, he could do pretty well in that industry. I thought his Covid pricing on the chassis was decent for what you got.

I'm excited to see what you come up with and looking forward to following your build. Thank you for the updates!
