That’s as far as I got last weekend. I bought the house end of last summer it’s a bhc beauty up in sunridge. This shouldn’t be super hard. I’m taking out the old tub/shower combo as it has cracks and is flexing pretty bad and I told my gf I would make the master suite nice and new for her. So the plan is to convert to a tile shower.

I’m widening the shower footprint by removing two rows of tile as there is a pretty big gap between the toilet and tub. I have some help from my boat partner and his brother to supervise me and right now he said he would move the water and do the piping. He also has a tile guy who he says will come out from SoCal in exchange for some vacation use of the home and some $$. Hopefully that works out.

So back out this weekend to finish the demo and do a little framing work. I’ll do a short video walk through before proceeding. Oh I guess I have to move the drain so I need to break some concrete fml this is getting hard. It looks like I can rent a breaker at Home Depot for 4 hours.

Added a pic of the vanity I did last fall as part of the upgrade I think I was in it about $1100-1200 on that after picking a returned one from lowes was only $750. I shoved a 60inch vanity in a 59inch opening what a bitch that was.

Sorry No video I borrowed a sawzall and demo’d it pretty quickly. So I guess it’s suppose to be 2” drain but that’s not gonna happen and I’ll have to move it over a couple inches. Will need some extra framing where the drywall transitions to the cement board and need to figure out where to put the cutouts after the water is plumbed. I’m switching the shower head to the opposite side if my buddy agrees to do it. Back in two weeks.

Looks good. I cut the edges on my oversized vanity with a diamond blade and it worked out ok. Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Also hoping things slow down so I can do something with my lot up there in Sunridge.

Guy has been building a house two doors down. He has been at the job site all day saturday and sunday last two weekends...I wonder if he is an owner builder to be working that hard all weekend long. I will go talk to him next time I go out there. The other house at the bottom of Mccormick sat as just a frame for months but recently got stucco'd, roof and windows so its moving along. Tons of lots changed hands with not much construction happening overall. I am also working on getting replacement windows and adding a new patio door where a wall now sits will open up the view out the back of the house.

Slow progress. I chipped out two rows of floor tiles to widen the shower footprint. Removed all insulation and cleaned up. The drain line upon closer inspection was 2” and I bought all my parts for this. I did a little planning for cutouts and water lines. Friend with nail gun is going to help with the next step. Went out on the lake both days so not much activity.

neighbor building house wasn’t there this time just a sub was working Saturday so didn’t get to see what he doing

framed it out this weekend put a couple cutouts and added the rough in valve. Moved the drain over. I didn’t put it dead center it’s just how it turned out. Estimated labor time was about 10-12 hours. I had a lot of help so it’s not really DIY but no labor cost yet. Sitting at about $600 right now. Fixture was $200 plus wood and more misc stuff

Bathrooms are fun. Small enough to handle but still can get out of hand. Finished our last one in 2020. Learned a ton, and was very thankful for my contractor friends who helped me through the plumbing and electrical. Always better when you can accomplish completion and look back at what you did.

I might be too late but have you looked at something like this
We put shower valve on one side and head on the other.
Yes I’m moving the shower head to the opposite side of the valve also. My friend told me to do a half wall but I’m using a nice piece of fixed glass instead. Also installing a shower seat. Originally thought I could stay around 2k ish in material now looks to be 3k. My buddy is trying to get a tile guy to come out and finish his bathroom and I’m trying to catch up to him and get the guy to do a 2fer.

Got hit with a covid delay on my shower glass I ordered this week. A couple week delay she didn’t know I was months away from needing it. Took a detour last week and I bought a used swim spa im shipping out next weekend. It will slow down my shower work I’ve got to do some work on the backyard now.

Also bought a shower seat on offer up only $80 it is 36in. Need to make sure there is wood framing where I want to mount it.

Bought this swim spa used had it delivered from San Diego into it about 9k plus I’m having a sub panel added along with the gfci connection. Had to cleanup the backyard to prep for delivery dump run about $80 included bathroom demo stuff hidden costs everywhere on this project.

I purchased some sloping sticks to help slope the shower correctly another $50 for the kit

Finished up the spa and electrical and then got back on the shower last weekend. Added the wood framing for the shower seat and put back some of the insulation and put up a few cement boards. Was using my jigsaw to cut it. Only bought one blade which I bent then I used some other blades I had that wore out before I could even finish a cut. Slow going right now. Hope to finish the water this weekend and the cement board. I received my shower glass last week. It was a couple week delay. I paid $570 for the glass hope it looks nice.

I wanted a marble threshold but my width is now 4.5” not sure how to overcome this I’ll see if I can find a 5” wide piece

Probably need to order tile soon. The electrician I used for my spa said he would hook me up with a tile guy I think I’ll take him up on it.

Diamond blade on a grinder to cut it instead of a jig saw. You waterproof before the cement board went up?

My marble threshold arrived broken in two pieces this week. Son in law helping me this weekend should finish the cement board and move to sloping the floor soon. He offered to do the tile work but he has no experience with it he just got his GC license. This project seems to really drag on. Setting my deadline to start tile by Labor Day

Ready for tile. Need to redo the drain area first I did it wrong I’ve already been told. I’ll fix it and do a leak test this weekend.

Need to buy tile now

Drain is most important part. Post up some pictures of what is wrong and your fix. Make sure it can't move by someone stepping on drain down the road after finished and compromising the redgard seal

I redid the drain area I think it’s good now. Started my tiling I did the niches myself and my son in law did about two rows of tiles. We keep going to the lake instead of working. Next time I’m out I’m going to stay until I finish at least get all the tiling done and can grout another time

As a hotmopper put a plug in that pipe to water test the shower pan part. Fill it up 3 inches let it set for 24hrs. If it holds great move forward if not find out where leak is and fix it.

Finished product. Water pressure was meh need to see if there is some kind of flow restrictor in the shower head. Also water temp seemed not as hot as other shower. Maybe I’ll just boost the water heater setting or it could be cold water getting mixed with the hot at the shower handle.

The biggest fuck up was probably the threshold my marble piece was not wide enough. Not sure how I was so far off with my math. So not enough over hang and the shower side no overhand at all. I wasn’t thrilled with the floor tile it was an online order was suppose to be black/white.

Total cost for materials about 3500 or maybe a little more gonna do a spreadsheet

Okay so I came up with $4400 in receipts but some of the home depot receipts had non shower items on them so I'm giving my best guess of $4100-4200 in material costs. The tile total was about $1150 the glass was $575 the marble threshhold was $220 and the shower fixture was $200. The rest went into other materials and supplies I borrowed a commercial grade tile saw which save me some money. I just forgot I didn't put the shower seat in the cost it was about $100 on offer up and I still need to mount it. Thats the thing about doing this yourself as a non contractor I was really inefficient with my work and was sloppy on parts that I spent extra time on clean up or redoing things etc. God only knows how many man hours I spent I'm gonna guess its in the 100 range.

I have another smaller shower I can do next year. I should ask my GF what she thinks about that. I'm actually thinking about doing the exact same remodel in the other bathroom. New vanity and a tile shower I think i can be a lot more efficient on my second round.

Look at the instructions for the shower fixture. There is a procedure to adjust the water temperature by adjusting the range of movement in the handle valve. Kohler, Delta I know have this feature.

Yes there was a pull and twist plastic knob. I stared at the fixture and the instructions for a few minutes and then the light bulb went on in my head. I went max hot and then had to back it off a few clicks. Also took out the plastic piece that restricted water flow I think it’s a little too much now so I am going to drill a few holes in it and put it back to get it just right. Snowbird coming after Xmas anyway so I’m done.
