I signed up here on May 18th '09 or so.. The " if "you're" old, you remember this post earlier today got me thinking of this fun day in Portland when this thing went off.. Truly amazing power that was created when it happened.. Day to night some said, the blast knocked down millions of board feet of timber..like toothpicks.. It traveled 300 miles an hour and went out almost 17 miles...oh yeah, it was only about 350 degrees in the shockwave... I was 21.

I remember it.... My elementary school had some ash from the eruption on the fields a few days later. Few years later in grade seven my class did its end of year camping trip there and we saw what was left first hand.

I was in high school in the bay area when it happened. I don't really remember when it happening ( I was too busy taking care of my munchies at Jack in the box) but I was given a small baggie of ash that I still have. :D

I still have vivid memories of the day . Was at work and thought a nasty storm was rolling in . By the time our shift ended at 4 it was dark as night outside. We only got an inch or so of ash but a little to the south they had six inches on the ground.
We drove up in the late 80s to see it and scope is unimaginable, trees for miles laid flat like combing your hair out of the shower.

I was stationed at Castle AFB, we had a lot of our aircraft flying in region at altitude. Days later after performing post flight inspections, we were pulling non pressurized exterior panel and started to find pockets of ash. All aircraft that flew within so many miles were grounded, all exterior panes had to be removed and washed and rinsed.

Lived in Battle Ground Wa at the time. (35 or so miles to the SW) Just barely heard the eruption that morning. Got out of bed normally and it just looked like a normal cloudy day. When we turned on the TV all hell was breaking loose!!! Was in grade school at the time and we did Volcano drills a few times a week. everybody carried ash masks with them. I mowed lawns to make some ca$h and it was hell with the dust clouds. My dad made me quit as the lawnmower air filters were not all that effective against the ash so the wear and tear was costing more than I was making.

Boating Content: We had a 1978 Kona Daycruiser (460/Berkeley) at the time. There was a mural painted on the transom of that boat on Spirit Lake with St Helens erupting in the background... It sure got some looks fora while after.

In college, and my GF's parents had property on the Mt....I didn't get the problem until later, mud and ash turned a foreest into a wasteland.

Crazy 38 years later you can still absolutely see the results of the explosion from ash lines on trees, mowed down forests still and over 1/4 of spirit lake still filled with trees from the blast. Crazy.

I remember watching a really cool documentary when I was a kid about the people that refused to leave when the area was evacuated.

Oh yea, I was at Washington University and they locked us down for several days. I might still have jar of ash in storage.

I watch the "local" news at 5pm. KCPQ Fox 13 out of Tacoma Washington. They did a segment on the eruption tonight. I was 8 going on 9..... My grade seven trip there was only four years later. I can still remember thinking this is what the after math of a nuclear bomb looks like. It was 1984 and the Russians still a nuclear threat at the height of the cold war............... For campers I bet its still worth the trip to see!

I would love to know the story of the guy water skiing.
That has to be staged, no one within many miles of the lake survived. The lake was half filled with mud and timber

I lived in WA state at the time. Was 15 when it happened. Rode my bike down to the end of the street (Kent, WA), and could see the huge plume!

If it’s not a fake, that looks like it was on Swift or Merlin resivior... Not Spirit lake ( Which was instantly turned into a boiling mud pool 1000’ higher in elevation than before)

Graduated from Kentridge in 1982. I was salmon fishing out of Westport the day of the eruption and knew nothing of it till we got back to port. That was crazy to see, riding horses and dirtbikes in the Moses Lake, Potholes area you were eating ash 5 years later.
Streetlights came on in a bunch of Eastern Wa towns I remember the news telling everyone to put panty hose on the air filter intake of cars.

My family was living in Kennewick Washington when St Helens erupted. I was 6 years old at the time. We drove up a hill at the edge of town to get a good view of the eruption cloud. My mom had straight blonde hair down past her waste. There was so much energy in the air from the blast that her hair stood straight up above her head. Keep in mind we were 225 miles away.

Lived in Redmond Wa. at the time, was 13 yrs old. Just finished my Sunday paper route of 175 papers and on my way home. rounded the corner from Old Redmond road onto 154th Ave. it was an awesome sight. Lucky for us the wind was blowing opposite our direction so we never had any ash fall on us.

We live about an hour north of St. Helens and I was 16 when it blew. I remember sitting with my dad watching for any latest news clip from the reporters in the middle of it. We didn't get any ash but the farm we go pheasant hunting at by the Tri Cities got about 5-6 in. of the stuff.

Our group always spent time in Osoyoos on May long weekends, camping and water skiing. Woke up around 8am by the sound of the eruption. By 12 noon, northerly winds brought tons of ash to the lake. It was so bad, we could hardly see across the lake. We picked up the tents and moved North to Shushwap Lake to finish our trip. Seems like happened just yesterday:eek:
