X2. Needles is the armpit of the earth anyhow. It makes shitholes look nice. You would think the town wouldn’t chase off the one event that draws people to fill up the motel 6 and Denny’s.

The Blue water would be a better venue. With some exhibition.

Does Billy B now having his shop in Needles have any say in where the event takes place?

I don't think the city of Needles has any control of the sheriffs writing tickets ....... really sucks though, for some reason they started this shit last year

NO doubt about Blue Water is a great option for any event. For future option consider also Havasu Landing.New Hotel/Casino well underway.New Marina is finished, all infrastructure is completed. Not looking for a negative conversation about Indians,it is what it is.This place is going to be a destination.

I heard the road into the landing is pretty bad for towing trailers on?

I've been to darn near every one of them and won't go back next year. It used to be a blast with the boats running and the crowds it drew but not anymore. The $10.00 parking is crazy, phuck 'em.

I had a goodtimes, with everyone and seeing some old friends , time goes by to fast. [emoji106] [emoji106] [emoji106] [emoji202]

Event seem low on participant level and yes the running of boats , that didn't happen , was disappointing from a spectators point of view

10 bucks to get in and 10 bucks to park
You got a wrist ban , I never wore it as it went into my pocket , never asked about it ....

Goodtimes with good friends, old and new = priceless [emoji106] [emoji202]

X2. Needles is the armpit of the earth anyhow. It makes shitholes look nice. You would think the town wouldn’t chase off the one event that draws people to fill up the motel 6 and Denny’s.

The Blue water would be a better venue. With some exhibition.

Thanks to Dave and the RDP community for coming out once again in support and friendship to the Needles RT. 66 boat and car show. This show started as an idea between Billy and and Dick Pyle. They thought it would be fun do something nice for the small town of Needles. They wanted to put on a small show in town and maybe even a parade. It took some time and diligence, but as you all know they succeeded and now we're 10 shows into it.

Here's my view of how things have evolved.

For show number 2, the city expanded the parking lot and made the park nicer. Hell, they let us camp that year. Many launched and ran in front of the crowd. As the years went by and participation grew space became tight, plus the show looked better without the tow vehicles parked in there. Eventually sponsorship's, live entertainment and a golf tournament were added.

The show Teed off early Friday morning continuing at 4 with the rt 66 parade and ending in a street party at the old El Garces hotel. For the non golfers the water was free and many opted for boat rides instead. Saturday was show day. Every year (with good weather) the show seemed to grow.

With that growth it's harder to launch boats. Having to fetch your vehicle from the lot, waiting in a long line to launch and then losing your parking spot or even getting boxed in the lot because there were no parking lot attendants became discouraging. They did add parking attendants this year so that was good.

Last year (2017) the sheriff unexpectedly went from observing to enforcing. This happened with no notice on show day and many of us weren't prepared for that. Billy tried to reason with them and some compromise was reached. That being said, many participants were turned off.

This year I thought the city was going to acquire some sort of permit to legalize everyone...?

I'm guessing here, but I think when Billy found out the city failed to get that permit he tried warning everyone about getting their fire extinguishers and license numbers handled. Charlie with the K-450 is from Washington. His boat hadn't been registered since 1990 and was out of the system. He ran out of time getting that taken care of.

I've enjoyed every show because it's like a reunion for me. This year was no exception. I try and squeeze in too much in between photo's, sometimes boating, and catching up with friends. It goes by in a flash, but I love it.

You're giving us too much credit - The Denny's closed last year.

Does it seem like there are some unrealistic expectations here?

- Guy launches an unregistered boat, get's a ticket - The river isn't closed for the event, it's the same thing as deciding to take a front engine dragster out of the parking lot at a car show, and make some passes down the public street. Yea it's bitchin, but what do you expect? When they had the Billy B's event at Pirates cove, tickets were being handed out due to the boats idling too fast thru the no wake channel also. Same shit. Sheriffs / Fish and Game / AZ Fish and Wildlife don't really care if you have an event happening, they still enforce the laws. What do they do at the bluewater when they hold events, is there a permit to close that section of river? Maybe they should look into that for Needles if it's possible

600 mile day for me. Show was pretty much as expected, didn't really see anything I hadn't seen before.
Ten bucks to park, ten bucks to get in, cost money to put these things on. No big deal. If it was 20 to get in I would have been pissed.
Didn't even see an RDP booth.
Went back to the truck after 4 hours and a head lights were on. Damn it. Truck never skipped a beat lit right up.
Went down to Pirates had a late lunch, then hit the road home.
It was good just to get out of the house.

Rdp booth was next to Nordic [emoji202]

We hope for and have previously received much leniency in the past. This event helped save Needles from bankruptcy. We've been making passes and running our boats down there for decades. We've even had an officer on his lunch break go for a ride in a k boat once. He tapped before the ride really started but he wasn't concerned with the lack of fire extinguisher or cf numbers. Many of us only go out a few times a year and often there's a sherriff's vehicle keeping an eye on us. Most of our outings are off season and with high end paint jobs we try not to put on our cf numbers and we've gotten away with it until last year. I like many other's painted CF numbers on my boat for the first time last week. As I already said, Charlie ran out of time.

And as I already said, we thought the event was going to be permitted.

The event is a show and shine, not a on the water run your boat event. That being said, I really do miss all the boats running. Half the reason for going. I may be wrong, but I believe this is a fund raising event for Needles. Billy has worked hard to keep our favorite type of boat welcomed in the Needles area. Of course the city makes money off everyone coming to run their boats or watch the boats run. It seems like there must be some people on city council who do not appreciate us all coming to their city in the middle of winter to spend money. Add in all the different law enforcement agencies, major headache. City needed to pony up for the permit. To be told of certain restrictions last minute by the city was BS for all. Billy works hard to pull all this together. I imagine one day he will be tired of the crap and say screw it and just stay home and enjoy his weekend. Wonder how the city will feel then about the loss of this event. Big thank you Billy and Janice.

Oh they will start crying once all that money leaves the town. I agree needles needs to step up , if they want to keep it going. [emoji202]

I think Billy and everyone involved to keep this going is doing a great thing [emoji106]

It’s a shame you missed us.. We were parked next to the Nordic Semi, and brought a lot of great shirts to the show, and what is in my opinion the boat that should have won the whole show..

We brought “Renegade” with Dave Sammons. There is so much history behind this boat it is unreal.. The build alone should have taken it down.

Now I’m wondering if maybe the judges didn’t see it?

Saw Renegade. Badass for sure. Saw it back in the day. Are those dune buggy seats original to the build? Guess I had my head down most of the time. Too bad would have liked to meet and greet a little.
Saw some guy I thought was milfy. I said " hey you that milk guy?"
He said no and walked liked he was ditching a subpoena.
Hit the monster truck and asked if Bilgie was around and got WHO? Lol.
It was a good day.

Damn, that is one beautiful and extremely unique boat.
Perhaps you know. In a hard coupled freight train configuration like this, is it started and ran as essentially a single V-16 ?

The last one of these that I saw was in a hot rod and it had one starter motor on the front engine. But since the engines were siamesed at the crank, it fired both of them up. The builder was talking about trying to put some sort of clutch system between the engines so he could fire up engine 1, engage the clutch and use engine 1 as a starter motor for engine 2. I couldn't wrap my head around making that system work.

Thanks, I was curious in part because our Army LCM's (75' landing craft) had a left and right bank of tandem (Not freight trained) DD 6-71's --- so two a side. They were coupled in a manner that allowed them to be disconnected and started and ran separately. This was primarily done so if one engine blew, it could be decoupled and the other continue running. That being my only experience with twins operating a single shaft.

Certainly old school cool :D

When the engines were decoupled, how did the power from engine 1 pass through engine 2 to get to a driveshaft?

I remembeer when Bob Campbell had Freight train Big block Chevy's in his 32 Campbell, Numero Uno, they were chain coupled like the boat above and he had two starters on the front engine. One was mounted on the block and the other was mounted up high on the bell housing for the Velvet Drive trans, so when he hit the starter the two starters engaged at the same time and the front engine that was coupled to the rear started them both together. They were timed 45* apart so ran like a big V-16. Bob used to say it felt like you had a throttle that was a mile long (Lots of torque).

Don't quote me on it, but I believe this one does operate like that. Not sure what the benefit of it would be though.

Had I known there may have been a "boat registration problem", I would have brought down a couple of my "Arizona dealer tags" to loan out to the boats .

People in the business, like Billy, Steele, Connolly, even River Dave, can get "Az dealer plates", and they are only $5.00 a year to re-new . (such a deal)

They can be used for; boat demos, engine/mechanical testing, new design testing, and can be used/displayed on any boat that is associated with your "boat related business, in Arizona" .

YES, there would be "partial liability", if I loaned my numbers to a guy who then drove his K-boat thru a campfire, but the main point is our "willingness to comply with the authorities", but this also does nothing for the NOISE factor .

It now seems as though the town/Chamber members of Needles are willing to put in the work to make $money$, but not enough work to make the LEOs, and participants SAFE and HAPPY .

I had to look at that "twin engine chain coupler", a few times . It's larger that what Glenwood has offered for SM Chevys (to run off the front) for Crackers and circles .

The thing that allows it to work here are the massive motor rails . I've been thinking about doing one with a "Greek coupler system", two splined "cups", with a very short splined shaft .

I like "different stuff", and how people overcome the problems they encounter when building their toys .

Man!!! I missed the booth too! Not sure how cuz we were checking out the Nordic (unreal) and the Renegade(amazing) and we were parked close by. Could have been the libations. Two incredible pieces of machinery and so well done. With slight exception to the black office chairs.

I thoughts the show was off attendance and boat wise but always a great time and look forward to any event in the winter to get the juices flowin! Great peeps and beautiful hardware and always new boats tonsee! Gonna head down early next year to run the boat before and relax for the show. Needles is great but a show at Bluewater in Parker would be killer. Everyone together in one place, good grub in town etc etc.

Thanks to all involved for putting this on. I know it’s not an easy deal.
