hello, i am the gelcoater (my screen name is gelcoater spelled backwards because that how its done) for nordic boats. i have massive amounts of pics of boats from tooling to finish and thought i would share, if you like that kind of stuff. i have been given the green light to open the doors to the current and recent goings on. i will post a bit each time, and you can see that we are no longer your fathers ultra conservative nordic. hope you like and like i said, there will be more as i get my files organized............enjoy!

these first pics are of our new 39 v. completely new, not a shortened 42. it should be done in spring. i will update often........

Will the cockpit be a single insert or do you get to look forward to making several more molds for all the details?

i will ask thane the tooler, but almost positive it will be one piece cockpit/deck. the underneath however is a different story. also, he has a bitchin idea for a door that is all mocked up and pretty trick, but i was told to save some stuff for future posts. i guess my security clearance has limitations(or more accurate, yours:D)

You guys are artists, period. Sometimes I understand these inside-out pictures, but when they are inside-out and backwards, I am lost.
Amazing stuff.

Thane, Johnny and the Nordic guys are building some absolutely beautiful boats, their performance speaks for itself as well.
There is so much cool stuff going over there, and they are very cool about showing what's coming.
Thanks for the awesome pics!

Terrific pics.
It's good to know this company has the pedal down even in a down economy.
They will be survivors. But the artistry is a kick to watch.

I'll be checking in every day now...I used to when I thought the wood-deck Schiada 24 would emerge. But now this is totally cool! Keep up the great work!:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

to the floor, my man! time to assert ourselves. may be a down economy, but we are still building! on the other side of that coin, they are these types(the types when i get the work order, i have an "oh shit" moment. the new norm. no place id rather be though! we are pushing eachother to one up. and remember, second place is the first loser.............have a nice thanksgiving.

absolutely! you coming to havasu for the show/desrt storm? with the economy like it is, i think our show is going to be the new la(atleast for local builders). alot arent going to la this year. saw the lack of turnout last year and it made me want to cry.

did you work with l cobb? i was a laminator at conquest when he was there. he is the one that made me want to gel. the best! jimmy pringle was very good also, but my, what a sour puss! i started taping under him and vidal martinez(magic boats fame). we were at advantage. my apprentice now runs the show over there. Patricio is a fantastic guy and a very good painter also. hope to hear from you again..........tom

Cobb I met once but never worked with him.
Pringle:DOne of a kind guy there.I worked with him for a while before he moved out there perminant. He can be a grouch at times,we got along well though and I learned a lot from him.he worked at Eliminator for a few years with Sullivan, who is married to my mom and how I got into it.He came out to Glamis a few times when I was in high school so I already knew him when I worked with him at West Coast. I don't know or have even heard of those other guys,I stay(for the most part) in my little so. Cal. bubble:cool:AZ is your guys territory and I keep out, haven't done a job there since before the year 2001,and it was for Louie, rip Lou:(

Pringle was quite a guy. He did my Advantage back in 89 when they were in Anahiem. He saw me checking out the taped mold and walked up to me with the drawing I had done. Asked me if I had done the drawing and when I said yes, he crumbled it up, threw it on the floor and walked away. Harry told me not to talk to him. HAHA

Hey Retaocleg, I think you're right about the 2012 Lake Havasu Boat Show being the "new L.A." show for high performance. With the Havasu Show and Desert Storm being within a few days of each other, I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of the big east coast builders show up at the boat show too. I hear that the boat show is having ski racing and an offshore race plus a car show too all at the same time.

that's pringle!.....lol. i remember one time at advantge, we got a graphic with lots of rip, tear, and little water dropletts(looked like spermies) and i started taping(he was to paint, i taped). there were like 10 or 12 on the boat, and i taped like the picture. he looked at me, walked over and pulled them off the mold , saying "they get 2!" lol.

i got along fine with him, but you had to be on his side on everything or you were a "007"(his words). he painted a beautifull boat, but at that time i think he had had it with boats. he is a classic car/street rod guy and thought of people walking all over his art as sacralidge. i miss him sometimes, always good for a giggle.

yeah, they are turning it into a several day event to get more to come. it just costs too much to pack everything and pay for space and time for la. and payoff by maybe 1 sale. i remember when i first started gelling in 2000 or so, they'd come back from la with 40 orders. cash down orders, not a salesman saying sold because someone showed intrest. id walk into the gms office to see what was next, and have a little anxiety attack. board so full that they were over lapping. and the board covered the whole wall(10 foot across, 4 feet tall board). all you could see was the customer name because they were one on top of the other. ah, the good old days.

all the panels on the bow go under the boat......which one was which? and yes the is a system that prevents the oops moment(swapped a color twice in 10 years, once recently). the color swap was on a boat that had different colors on each side, all variations of orange and red...........here is the drawing(next post down).........what could poss go wrong?..lol

colors on panels swapped side to side. and the deck was painted 2 weeks after the hull. luckily, you could barely notice the accidental mis swap because it was the smallest panel and the colors were close. good thing the boat is capped, spray a little further and presto, never happened

:lmao
Pringle was quite a guy. He did my Advantage back in 89 when they were in Anahiem. He saw me checking out the taped mold and walked up to me with the drawing I had done. Asked me if I had done the drawing and when I said yes, he crumbled it up, threw it on the floor and walked away. Harry told me not to talk to him. HAHA
Thats him.Trust me,your not the first to experience that.

so, gelcoater, you must know john L. from elim. he was a godsend for me. i am very thankfull he is the prod manager now. he lets the painter paint. doesn't get all up in my business either. our last guy never built a boat(gel or lam) in his life and always tried to tell me what i was doing wrong, even though he had no clue. he hated gelcoaters. all who worked under him had nothing good to say. john is the direct opposite. stress level goes down, creativity and execution go up.

sullivan was(is he still painting?) one of the best, he put alot of boats through that shop for his gel alone. i met once when he came out here and talked to pringle once. he prob wouldnt remember, i was just a lowly gopher, taper boy. you were lucky to have him teach.

happy thanksgiving!

Thanks for posting up the pics, this has the making of an epic thread!:thumbsup
Back in the day I was a painter, did a lot of dealership stuff and painted a lot of custom cars. I have always wanted to learn the methods used for gel, it would be cool to learn. As a painter I have a pretty good ideal of what it takes to put out this kind of work as far as time in tape and masking, but it seems like the blending techniques would be polar opposite of painting. Anyway great thread :thumbsup
