I saw that too, and am amazed. If I could pull off half of what you guys can, I think I could blow any other local guy out of the water.

......we are a dying breed, that is for sure...and with the down economy, nobody is training the new guys to take over for us down the road........and it takes years to master before being let loose on a spray booth willy nilly........tuff times now, even tougher in another 10 years.......

There are a few of us around here, one thinks he's the best, one is still actually working, and then there is me, starting out on my own, with more boat molds than a one or two man boat shop can handle. Filling out the corporation papers and sending those in this week. Working 14 hrs plus 5 days a week at a regular job. On the weekends either trying to rest up from the week, or out cleaning the building I aquired for my new shop. Out of 14 boats to choose from only 4 will fit in my current shop.

BTW,,,,beautiful work here!! :)

Pins/Graphics through the hull-deck joint questions.

This always amazes me!!

On a large (ITMG) In-The-Mold-Gel boat, lining up the pin lines and graphics that go through the hull/deck joint has got to be a bitch.
1: How do you approach it?
2. How do you fix it if they don't line up after popping and joining the hull and deck?
3. What is an acceptable tolerance? 1/8th, 1/4, 1/2 inch etc.....?

Thanks,
Jay

It's a bitch sometimes. His are very close, close enough the rub rail will make it disapear.Angles like that help also.Straight verticle(in relation to the shear line) are the worst, get it out by a 1/16th and it shows big time, and the rail ain't going to cover it.Then there's shoebox fit hulls:grumble::D
We have all done it at one time or another.Anyone who tells you they never missed on one ever is either is full of it or should be called the Million Dollar Gelcoater.:D

exactly...........
and now that some boats have that 1/2 inch chrome trim on the shearline, instead of a big plastic rub rail, tollerances have to be even closer.........

On the 24 is that a strip of carbon fiber down the center? I've seen that a couple times and always thought it was an awesome way to accent the graphics.

Can you explain a little bit more about it? I'm guessing the area is sprayed with clear gel in the mold then a strip of carbon fiber is laid down followed by the rest of the glass and layup?

I've heard carbon fiber is tough to work with to keep the lines/pattern perfectly straight but are there any other drawbacks...ie why don't we see this more often?

you guessed correct..........i spray the whole boat(all colors) leaving the carbon panel for last, but before exposing the CF, i black out the whole boat first, then expose and clear the CF panel....and yes, the laminators have to be carefull, no sqiggly's. as far as people not doing it? just a certain kind of customer, i guess. we do dashes in CF from time to time, sometimes graphics(did a 21 race with CF graphics about a year ago), although not as much as say 5-7 years ago.......

i would like to see the whole base done in CF, but if i even bring it up, i'll get shived by the laminators........lol

engine lid shot last night, and they are building it as we speak....the part in the center is cut out so the carbon and air cleaners of the motor are the only things sticking out, and the carbon on the lid picks up the carbon on the motor......the lid is red with carbon and black pin down the middle....

Great numbers with stock merc power! I'd like to see one of these with some nice graphics. I think the single color is hurting the lines of the boat.

Kevin is a great guy. He would always look after me when I had my Advantage. I think there is a lot of pressure right now with the Boat show starting Friday.
