One thing I noticed about gas vs diesel in the 2500/3500s... In WA and OR where I've lived my life the diesel is standard fare, a gasser is actually kinda rare. Then when I go to Florida it's way more gassers than Diesels. My theory on that is the Pacific Northwest is full of steep grades, and Florida is flat with cheaper fuel?????

My 2018 Ram is between 19 and 20 mpg 75 mph river trips not pulling. I've been using about a gallon of DEF for every 1000 miles.

In town its all over the place but saying a solid 15 is about avg.

Learned to drive in 2 trucks a Jeep J20, and a 91 F350 CrewCab Diesel.. Lot of great childhood memories in that truck...

M father had a 94 extended cab, then came the 96' crew cab long bed 460 duel tanks... Used to drive that to the beach every weekend.

Nothing like flipping the gas tank to aux while sputtering on the fwy.

I had a GMC 3/4 ton with a small block in it...

SOP with that truck too! 😁

I have owned mine a year and honestly have never looked at the gas mileage, One thing i do look at is my GF's face every week when i go spray wash it, which requires a quick pedal mash from the spray wash booth to the beach parking lot to blow of excess water for final dry. Her comment always, i hate this part, and i say what, you going to fast in this big truck too quickly, we are going to crash and i say we are barley over a 100.

I put a halt on the fifth wheel idea last year when I thought I was loosing my job over the vaccine mandate.
I’m not sure what direction we will be going with as far as RV. We may sit out another year again depending on prices. I’m not supposed to get my truck until June anyway.

But I really liked my big bumper pull. May go that route again. Not sure.

As far as gas truck up big grades. You would be surprised!
cajon 55-65mph
Baker was 45-50mph
Hill out of Bishop was 40-45.

It would do more if I rang it neck out. There was throttle left.
6.4 Hemi 6 speed 4:88 w/ 34” tires
Trailer empty was 10k loaded I was north of 12k-13k depending on where I was going.
When I went up the Bishop hill I’m positive I was well over 13k.

Those are good numbers. The 4:88 rear end has a lot to do with the power getting to the wheels. That’s a nice set up for towing.

If the OP, Boat211, does not tow much over 7,000 on a regular basis, I would highly suggest exploring a 2020+ RAM 1500 Eco Diesel like mine. You can get a Big Horn for 52K new, but take some time and see if you can snag a used Limited or Laramie to save $. HB RAM has a Limited in transit discounted 7G. I would go for the 3.92 rear if towing heavy loads. Do the math, 30+ MPG not towing and a 600 mile+ range. I tow a 5K load from Vegas to Corona, and back on the 26 gallon tank at Vegas diesel prices.

Mine is a Limited, 4 air bag suspension, auto floorboards, and 10" screen, just about everything. I opted out of the sunroof, Vegas heat! Stick with optional rear end and posi if 2WD. Mine has 22" wheels, but for real continual towing, stick to the 18"-20". If you can locate one with the optional 33-gallon fuel tank, even better. Aside from a minor issue when it was new, I have 23,000 miles of flawless driving, the air suspension ride is a 10. Best truck I have ever owned.

2020 Dura max 4X4 I drive to Nevada a lot and consistently get 20 doing 80mph. About 15 around town and 12 towing.

Thanks for that info. I drove a Chevy 1500 with the 3.0 diesel yesterday. Power wasn't bad at all considering. It had the 3.23 gears which I assume would be good for freeway mileage. I am hearing 30 mpg. The biggest thing I tow now is my 21RC. There is a new Silverado /Sierra coming out any day I am reading online. From what I understand it is mainly an interior upgrade. If anyone is interested, look up the "Silverado Refresh". I will look into the Dodge too.

Just drive that RAM, and SIT in the back seat, it is HUGE. On upper models, even the rear seats are heated, fronts ventilated ,110 volt outlets front and back, USB's everywhere, it does not end on the interior design is hands down the best. Most diesels have the 3.92 rear option as it gives max towing up to 8,210 I believe or more. Since we live inside the truck, give that your major consideration, they will all tow, but we as drivers sit in that seat for hours. I drive the I-15 every other week towing, I could buy any brand/model, this is the truck for a 1/2 ton. I could tow my load at 75 all day long, but I keep a steady 65-72, easy drive and on only one occasion did I get under 20 MPG with a 6K load. You will not be disappointed.

Change the oil frequently. Those VM Motori's soot the oil fast and it can lead to problems. 5k Max.

I had a 2002 GMC 2500 4x4 long bed 4 door, with exhaust and a tuner. Running 1oz of 2 stroke oil per gallon of deisel that got 22 freeway and 15 town, 10 towing 12000lbs.

I gave my son a 2001 Dodge 2500 cummins 4x4 quad cab, with exhuast and tuner, running two stroke oil additive, and he gets 22.5 freeway amd 16 town.

There is not one deisel thats 2006 or newer that I would even consider. Way to much smog shit on them that can fail, and they fuel econmy they have doesnt make financial sense, compared to equivalent gas motors.

Newer gas motors have alot more torque that engines in the past.

Newer deisels just have to much risk, and not enough savings for me.
