I normally use just some gasket sealer on the bottom of the timing cover and front part of the seal, along with dabs of silicone in all four corners. Once the gasket is in place, additional dabs on the bottom four corners of the gasket, as well as some on the bottoms of both ends. It's important to be careful tightening the pan in place, and more recently I have started barely snugging the pan and letting it sit over night, then come back the next morning and tightening it down, always working from the center out, going through the pattern several times.

Thanks Barry, so you don't put anything along the rails from front to back.
By gasket sealer do you mean like Permatex #2 or Gascacinch ?

The silicone rubber type don't require anything on the rails to make a good seal.

I normally use the Gascacinch. Have tried some other sticky red stuff but was not real happy with the results, and it was messier.

The Right Stuff gasket maker works awesome for the timing cover, seals, and the "dabs in the corners". Much better than the normal Permatex type material.
