Alright so we all know getting old comes with it own set of issues... Some of them are just flat out old man issues that come with age... However I am trying to deal with the fact I am just not an old man yet but I am having to deal with hearing issues for years now.. Started about 5 years ago and has only become worse every year.. (60% hearing loss in both ears?) I did the right thing and tried to ignore if for a few years just waiting for it to "Self heal" but that just didn't seem to work. Then add the mask BS to it.. And forget it.. Cant understand anything..... So it was time to do something.... And after many Dr visits, specialist and again... waiting I finally pulled the trigger and as of this week am fitted with bran new set of old man hearing aids!!!! The first day it was really exciting as holy crap!!!!! I CAN HEAR AGAIN!!... Probably more than I want but man was it over due... I wish I had done it years ago... I had no idea what I was missing since hearing take years to degrade... While I am really excited on what I can hear today I am not really excited on the reality of knowing I am now locked into managing yet two more devices and accessory's for the rest of my life .... (A bit less than exciting to be honest)... Just having a hard time accepting at my age but then again... Its not like I have a choice... Like my wife says... I am a newer model with HIGH mileage.... But accepting the 10K price tag and the responsibly of not losing them, breaking them or jumping in the river with them on just doesn't have me excited any longer..... (I am looking forward to hearing how RAD our boats sounds!)

Have any of you out there had to deal with the same..? How long did it take you to adjust? Did you stick with it...? Cant say I care too much about the looks as they are much smaller these days compared to my grandpa Gorge style from way back when I was a kid and I already landed the wife (ha ha).... But concerned about sticking with it..... F O R E V E R...........???????????????🤔

Glad to hear you found a solution to your hearing loss. I'm sure your life is going to improve leaps and bounds.

Water/Riverproof hearing aids however sounds like a killer invention to create now that you mentioned it.

My brother has just admitted he’s going to get them. Years of motorcycle and race cars. Tinnitus surgeries also that didn’t work. Driving his truck up Escondido grade towing a trailer with a truck on it detonating like crazy I look at him and he’s like what? You don’t mind that? Couldn’t hear a thing. Dialed timing back and had to ask me if we’re good.

I've had hearing aid since 30 years old hereditary hearing loss both ears. Some helpful information

1. You are undoubtedly listening to every noise Gods ever created. Hearing yourself breathing, birds sound like pterodactyls. Traffic sounds like a category 5 hurricane.... everything will give you a headache but your ears will adjust in time and everything will be normal within a week or so keep on wearing.

2. Put extra batteries everywhere. in each vehicle, your office, night stand, wife's purse ect. Nothing worse than being mid-conversation and a battery dying.

3. Put waterproof containers in the boat, by the swimming pool and remember to double-check your ears before getting in the shower or jumping in the lake. At $3k a pair it can be a costly mistake

4. If you use power tools or a lawn mower (anything loud) invest and some good noise cancelling headphones. Not only will it save your sanity the amplifiers have a tendency to go bad after exposure to loud noise.

5. Hearing loss qualifies for a permanent jury duty exclusion. Can get a letter from your audiologist or doctor and mail it in unless you like jury duty.

6. You now also have an endless selective hearing excuse. Anything the wife says you've always got the defense oh, sorry honey my batteries are going dead didn't hear you.

I know it might make you feel old but being able to join back in the conversation is priceless

I was born half deaf and struggled in my early years to hear. It got way better right after high school. Hearing loss was still there but my English language skills were much much better. So I could piece together a sentence while only hearing part of it. I could read lips at a very early age and even know sign language. Then covid with the mask thing and I can’t hear shit again and I can’t read their lips. I had hearing aids as a kids but was soo made fun of I don’t wear them anymore. Since about 6th grade. I should go get a new pair. But idk lol

Old man I worked with years ago had hearing aids and he loved 'em. Said he got a lot happier when he lost his hearing. He'd turn them off when most people were talking

My brother in law can’t hear ANYTHING! Refuses to acknowledge it. Loud boats & car racing are the cause. My sister is soooo tired of repeating herself 😣
👍👍 to you guys that finally did something!

Not to change the subject completely but this goes for cataract surgery as well. Did you know there are mountains all around Havasu???? 😁

The hearing loss doesn't really bother me, although the masks have made it more challenging. I've watched the TV with closed caption on for so many years I don't even notice it, plus it's kept my reading proficient. But yes, the cataracts, I'm going to have to get that done, as the world is slowly getting more hazy. At least I can still see the mountains around Havasu. 😁

Now if I can find something to let me drink all the beer I want and keep this damn beer belly in check life would be great:D

If I didnt have a wife I couldnt watch TV (what did say?) Loud headers , 44 mag , air tools hammers etc , sooooo My Sister just gave me a set of "once used " hearing aids left behind by my deceased Pops , she claims I need to got to an audiologist and have them "fitted" and tuned up ? I say if they fit they have volum controls , why would I need a "tune up" ?

I have a hearing lose at just a certain hz range that make it somewhat are to hear talking when there is to much background noise. I tried hearing aids but they couldn't tune them to fix my problem so I live without for now.

I spent 40 years in both the Coast Guard and Sheriff's Office in loud situations. In the Coast Guard, my specialty was in Naval Engineering. Running and repairing machinery. In ship enginerooms with massive diesel engines, on patrol boats with diesel engines, on small boats with inboard and screaming (pre-Verado) outboard engines. Shipboard gunnery exercises, 5", 50 cal, etc. With a sub-specialty in Law Enforcement, I had frequent trips to the range with substandard hearing protection. Pretty much the same with the SO, except for the big diesels, but add in sirens, air horns and other loud evolutions.

There are some ranges that I flat cannot hear, period. I have a constant buzzing and ringing in my ears. So bad, I sometimes forget it's there until I get to somewhere quiet.

Costco Hearing Aids work for me, started needing them in my mid 50's, also Costco is the largest hearing aids supplier in the United States. Best place to go if insurance does not cover it.

Wasn’t Me I know where you are coming from. When I was 16 I was in a motorcycle accident and part of the after effect was the inner ear bone that swelled and cut off the nerves to my left ear drum never fully subsided. I lost all hearing in my left ear, but after awhile, it came back to 80%.
As I aged it gradually got worse and in my mid 50s I almost did not want to go out socially cuz I could not hear a damn thing but the din of a crowd.
Finally got it taken care of and have been wearing a hearing aid (Henry I call it) for nearly 10 years now. What a difference to life.
WYRD offered some excellent and practical actions to take.
Hearing aids are not cheap by any means, and hooray for those who can utilize Costco versions and others that are less so. Just did not work that well for me.
I am on Henry 3.0 as technology keeps getting better and better.

Using Closed Caption when I watch TV has greatly improved my speed reading capabilities and as a bonus, I don't have to guess at the plot anymore 😁
Another added bonus, my wife doesn't have to wear ear plugs 😂 The pisser is if I watch the TV news, the CC lags so bad, I'm reading about the weather while they're showing sports clips and they regularly insert wrong words.

I Love the Movie Experience in a Theater, but have stopped even before Covid as I just can't understand most of the Words. I did try their Headphones and not much better.

I agree, used to be a time when movies were about the riveting and entertaining dialog. Now it's all about thundering loud sound effects and booming fucking background music.
My old ears hear bass no problem, I can hear artillery rounds at Camp Pendleton my wife can't hear. But she can hear a hummingbird chirp or the damn bats sending out sonar, or the gal mumbling behind the mask at the check out counter, that I can't.
Evening weather report and the fucks have a pounding bassline in the background --- WTF is that about ? Why does the news need background music ??

So yes, like you, years ago I stopped attending movie theatres for the same reason. At least at home I can watch the movie later with CC on and know what's going on.
Several TV and Sound Bar manufactures are now including "Speech" settings in order to extract and amplify the dialog so it can be heard over the background bullshit.

Pretty much me on the screaming outboard engines, Two stroke MotoX mechanic when I was 15 and that lead to 2 smoke outboard mechanic until I retired. I still to this day, when I smell a 2 stroke, I think of MONEY!!! ;)

I know friends who have them, the frustrating part is taking them out at the river..... they don't put them back in because they are in the water..... They can't hear, they get frustrated.

I'm like you Alan. I have selective frequency deafness. My overall hearing is about 30% below normal but certain frequencies I can't hear regardless of volume. I think my wife often speaks in those frequency ranges. It is weird when you try to listen for something that everyone else hear and you get nothing. The wife will tell me that something is making a funny noise and want me to listen to it. I go and listen and get nothing, she says "how can you not hear that", I say I hear nothing so she starts practically yelling at me and I tell her that her screeching isn't going to make me hear what she wants me to hear.

Thanks for that bud!! I started to lose it around 35.... And being 42 now and at 60% loss... Its been a challenge.... Thank you very much for the pointers.... I really appreciate it more than you know... Like you said in #1... Keep them in... The Dr said it will take 2-4 months to re train my brain for speech... The headache is much better today on day #3 after the appointment yesterday they re tuned them..? Seems better today... No changing batteries anymore.. They have finally caught up with technology and have a case/charger similar to the wireless head phones these day.. Good god it sounds like my truck is going to rattle apart... ha ha...

42???
Give it 20 years...you’ll miss these days! Lol

My kids are almost that age!

My wife will say something to me quietly, I can't hear her and say What ? Then when she repeats it she fucking hollers it with her face all twisted and pissed off looking --- so then I respond "Hey, you don't have to yell at me !!! " 😂
She hears shit all the time I can't hear, I just tell her she's imagining it. In truth, there's things I do wish I could hear better and there's a lot of things I wish I couldn't hear at all, especially yapping dogs which I seem to hear just fine. Or my neighbor kid's fucking mufflerless Subaru, which sounds like two Harley's waiting at a light. 😖

Our wives seem to have come out of the same pod!! 😁 How about smell?? Mine can smell a tick fart on an elk's ass at 500 yards. My normal response to what smells is "what smell".

Nope, my odor receptors are more sensitive then hers, I often wish they weren't. Especially sensitive to perfume, the vast majority to me smells like the old Diazinon ant spray.
But when it comes to vision (Now with my lovely cataracts) and hearing, she's my seeing eye and hearing aid. The only exception being, I can see read the small print without glasses, she can't read up close without her readers, but she can see that gnat's ass on a branch out in the yard --- so shopping me make a good team. She leads to the right isle and has me read her the labels 😂 Oh, getting old, what a hoot

I have been wearing them for about 7 or 8 years now. Just got a new pair of Oticon ($6K) Connect via Bluetooth to my phone. They make good better and best I believe. These were the best. I can raise and lower from my phone if I want or right on the HA it's self. They have models that you have to have a charger for but I opted for the batteries instead. My thought was I can just change batteries whenever they die(you hear a jingle when the batteries get low. Then I don't worry about having a charger or forgetting the charger when going some where. I use the brown batteries and they last about a week. I wear them from the time I get up to the time I go to bed. These are supposed to cut down on the background noise a little as well. That's what's really bad about hearing aids they make EVERYTHING louder. For those that are in denial you should hear what your grandkids are saying to you that your NOT hearing. I was one of those that said WHAT all the time. :)

Thanks guys... always good to know we’re not alone. Today is day number 4 and it’s been amazing how much I can hear now... Not saying I missed everything.. But I sure enjoy being able to hear the conversations... Wish I did it years ago.. The Bluetooth and charger pack is way better than years before.

Like a few others have said.. At least this issues is fixable... Can always be so much worse... Very thankful I could buy an option to correct it.
