Have a chance to get a 2005 F250, reg cab, 4x4, not abused, but it has the 5.4 v8 w/140k miles. Any input on the motor or truck type and what to look for. Thanks, Brendan

If it's still a non-VVT motor, they're pretty good. Not a powerhouse, but no major issues. The VVT ones are a pain, cam phaser issues and control solenoid failures.

As long as it has had regular oil changes, and someone else took the beating on doing the spark plugs at 100k, they are decent runners.

Make sure it has had the phaser solenoid updates, if not the updated chains too.

They are not as bad as most people say, most people with problems abuse them, and that is why the bad rep.

Run. My navigator had a phaser failure and I had to replace heads. About 20k after that a tensioner went out and I had chain slap at startup. It only took like 10 starts and it broke the guide and I had to go fishing for all the plastic parts. Replaced plastic tensioners with metal ratchet ones and sold it. Had to replace oil pump with a recently released high volume high pressure oem unit because ford used a pump that at idle doesn’t provide enough pressure to properly actuate the vct solenoids and phasers. Go watch “fordtechmakuloco” in youtube about how much a disaster the 5.4 3v motor is. There’s a 600 page thread on ford trucks forum about phaser issues.

get yourself a Chevy truck with a ls motor. It’ll run circles around the ford.

My 06 Chevy 2500hd reg cab long bed was bulletproof and towed better for comparison. I now have a Chevy 2016 reg cab long bed 2500hd 6.0 rated to tow 14,500.

I had an 03 extended cab long bed 4X4. I bought it new and put over 100K on it with no major issues other than exhaust manifold cracks.
