First, I hope you heal up 100% and the travel is better than expected. One question stands out for me; why wait to get home and not get treated where you are at?

Time and insurance...if it isn't an emergency it will go out of network most likely. It would be much harder to travel post surgery.

Got home from hospital at 3am with a new arsenal of prescriptions. Looks like Flexirol followed by Percocet did the trick. He’s still asleep on the couch. Time to start our journey soon. Wish us luck. We have a rental car so Im not sure how that part works. Maybe I’ll drop him off first and get the wheels chair then run the car back myself and meet him.
Sorry about Dave's ankle, sorry about Dave jacking up your trip. But can we get a picture of Dave all jacked up just to make sure it really happened;)

Have you considered just driving home? Google says 20 hours. Rent a van of some form so he can just spread out and hit the road, maybe less painful than all the airport stuff.

About the marijuana let me add this...my body is jacked up. Work was always hard on my already jacked up body and I treat my body like shit. Even hurt I’m still working, working out, and training. Anyways I’ve been on norcos since I was 18. Meaning I don’t take them regularly (hardly ever now) but I get a 40 pill prescription every month. Been like that for 13 years now. Over the last few years they’ve cracked down, really monitoring when I refill, and drug testing me once a year. Friday I went in because the dr said he needed to see me before refilling. I thought he wanted a drug test, but thought it was odd because I took one pretty recently. Anyways I went in and we had a chat. He basically said that his goal is to get me completely off. I explained the only real time I take them is if I wake up in the middle of the night in pain. So much pain I can’t go to sleep. He said he understood and he noticed my refills were way down. Like once every 4 months. I explained I’m no longer in the field and my body isn’t taking the beating it used to. He response or his advice is to stop taking Norco’s and smoke weed for pain management. I was shocked!! The 20 years or however long I’ve been seeing him he’s given me shit for smoking weed. I think it’s really crazy the way things are starting to turn around. From day one I’d rather smoke weed than take pills but they put this stigma on it. Now all of a sudden we want to switch? Make up your fucking minds. I told him all of a sudden? I said you know Kaiser is known for not treating shit? Just throwing pills at problems. Now you want me to just switch drugs!? He seemed shocked like he had never heard that. The conclusion was we agreed to disagree and i will be looking for a new dr to fix my knees and shoulders. I don’t like surgeries but if it can fix me maybe it’s an option. I was told by a specialist years ago surgery was a 50 50 shot and to just eat painkillers till I could no longer take the pain then try the surgery. Maybe the surgery is better now. Who knows. Kaiser is a joke though.
I was in the same boat as you, after multiple surgeries I was on a lot of Vicodin, norco etc. Now that marijuana is legal in California it is an option for a doctor to prescribe for pain relief, I had my doctor say the same thing to me but it works for me edible marijuana takes a edge off and allows me to function during the day and sleep at night. So now I do not use any Norco and only the marijuana as needed.

Looks like an emergency to me. I’d be on the phone getting approval. I got my cornea melt approved as a medical issue instead of an optometric issue which covered the surgery and all subsequent visits. $20 co pay instead of 50%.

The problem is the swelling has to subside before they do surgery. The ortho said it could be 5-10 days depending on how the swelling goes. He sees the recommended Ortho on Tuesday to check progress. I’m afraid him traveling with a cast post surgery would be more uncomfortable. You swell in the air and having a plaster cast could be miserable. My only goal today is to get him home. My gut says today is our day to do this so those are the plans I arranged yesterday. I offered to rent a big car and drive the 20 hours but he doesn’t honk he can handle it. So he chose flying. It will be a shitty day today I’m sure...but once we are home we can start working on recovery. Right now we are fucking stuck on the other side of the country. With zero resources.

Did the doctor say anything about watching for blood clots, particularly when flying? If not, you should ask.

I broke my ankle 23 years ago and had to have it screwed back together, I can tell you swelling in a cast sucks, there is nowhere for the swelling to go to and the pressure and pain is unreal. I actually had to break my cast in the middle of the night to allow room for the swelling. Good luck to you both, keep us updated.

Get better soon Dave. o_O
Hugs to Stacy for dealing with it all too. Tough assignment.
.
I know everyone is trying to help but I for one will not suggest MJ to Dave simply because he's told us all in so many words he has zero interest in it. Zero.

That makes sense. Best of luck. Hope it is far less painful than anticipated and over quickly.

This is a trip I’ll never forget. First time we got to meet Dave, Stacy and Kelly, I had a blast with them. I saw the fall and the foot, I had to look away because it was sideways. Looked very painful.
Hope the flight and surgery goes as smooth as possible. It was great spending the half day with you guys, hopefully we can meet up again sometime. Keep us updated.

Opiates quit working for me after taking them for years. Best advice my back doctor gave me was take 3 motrin (swelling & pain) & 2 Tylenol (enhance pain relief) or vice versa. They are 2 different drugs so no worries about ODing from them. Every 3 - 4 hours, even in middle of the night to stay on top of it.

I use this combo when coming out of my many surgeries & hardly touch their pain meds.

Plus it doesn't make your stomach feel like shit or your bowels get too bound up. Always take some Citrucel or something daily anyway.

I like the idea of a motorhome ride home. Any members in Vegas (assuming that's where you guys are flying into) that would be willing to escort the ol' RD home comfortably?

Appreciate the updates from you and Stacy. Getting home will be difficult accomplishment, but a big part of your road to recovery. Lots of well meaning advice here. But remember, everyone is different. Work with and listen to your doctors, Stacy and your own body. A whole bunch of people here are thinking about you. Safe Travels.

Jesus, I cant imagine that ride home on a Southwest flight. I cant stand that damn airline being 100% healthy. No legroom and a bunch of pushy slobs on board trying to get their overhead bin space.

Good luck Guys and we are all rooting for you Dave!

I wish I knew how to make memes because I’d make one that says

“And they forgot to sign the prescriptions”.

Pretty unreal.

Sorry to hear about the injury. Sounds like you are in good hands with your wife. If you’re taking pain meds try to stay ahead of the pain and make prune juice your new favorite beverage.

Best wishes to both of you.

Just gotta get home.. that’s all I keep telling myself.

100% agree. Direct flight I hope. Get on that plane and try to sleep. If plane is under sold, usually flight attendants will block row so you can sit against window and put leg across other seats to keep elevated. Explain situation and they try to help. Get that medical pre-board blue card.
