They should have planned better. Why should I have to support them?
I may be risking RD moving this thread to the dungeon, and I may be one interupting your inner peace, but doesn't your above statement conflict with "Democratic Socialism"? Or is "Democratic Socialism" different as we will all be supporting those with the inability to plan? I'll try and digest your explanation above (post #46) a little better, maybe I'll figure it out on my own.

Just in case you didn't notice, his post was taken straight out of The Grad's Playbook (AKA catching fish in the RDP barrel) 😁

(Read this... REALLY READ IT!!!... Then list what you believe is wrong with it.)

Ever since Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy, much attention has been focused on the fact he calls himself a democratic socialist. Socialist, in the American lexicon, has a negative connotation, mainly because of common misunderstandings.

Sanders himself has tried many times to explain the difference between “socialism” and “democratic socialism,” but the right still seems hung up on misrepresenting his views and exploiting people’s fears. America has a rich socialist history many people are unaware of, but still fear the “S” word and picture evil dictators and red flags.

To quell any fears and to put a great deal of misinformation to rest, here are five things that democratic socialism is not.

1. Democratic Socialism Is Not Marxism

When Sanders spoke at the Georgetown University, he said clearly that he is NOT in favor of “workers owning the means of production,” which is one of the most important aspects of Marxism. Marxism would replace the corporate ownership of business and would hand the companies to the workers to manage and control. This eliminates the capitalist structure, something democratic socialism does not do.

2. It Is Not Communism

In Karl Marx’s writing, he often used the terms “socialism” and “communism” interchangeably. Many still do today in the Marxist movements, but outside of that, most people see Communism as the political structure of the (now-separated) USSR and China. Marxist communism is impossible to enact wholely, so these regimes did not represent true Marxism. Even so, they are much closer to Marxist communism than to democratic socialism.

3. It Is Not A Replacement For Capitalism

True socialism would replace the capitalist economy we live in now and replace it fully with a socialist one. While this is the dream of Marxists and socialists everywhere, this is not the plan under democratic socialism. Democratic socialism would instead put more restrictions on corporations and owners. This would include limitations on how much more money a CEO can make compared to their employees, and granting employees more rights and higher minimum wage.

4. It Is Not The Same As Regular Socialism

Democratic socialists have historically rejected the belief that the economy should be centrally planned (a centrally-planned economy is a socialist keystone belief). Instead, democratic socialism believes that some parts of society may be better if they are democratically planned: mass transit, medical care, minimum wage, etc. Democratic socialism still believes the capitalist market is best for consumer goods and services.

5. It Is Not Outside The Democratic Party

When Sanders announced he was running for President, he switched his party from Independent to Democrat, and many wondered why a socialist would run as a Democrat. Yet, what many didn’t understand was that Democratic Socialism is not a party in itself and is an ideology that actually exists inside the Democratic Party.

Democratic socialists only hope to strengthen the party by improving upon issues the nation faces today such as healthcare, college tuition, and a strengthened social safety net.

Hi... I'm Squeezer, one of the token Liberals on the board. Nice to meet you. Have staked out ground about as far left of anybody around here and attempt on every occasion to articulate what that means an why. If its not obvious by now post #2 was 1000% sarcasm. Spelled that out in post number 8 as there is a pretty solid history around here of the inmates having trouble telling fact from fiction. Post #46 is how I actually believe things need to be done in order to get the USA back into alignment with acceptable priorities. Those priorities are best accomplished by putting Americans first. All Americans...

To put it simply. If you were an animal would you want to live in the zoo where everything is distributed evenly no matter how well or how poorly you perform? And your life is under the control of others. Or, would you rather live in the jungle where your success is based upon how well you perform and your life is controlled by no one but you. I myself would much rather live in the jungle, where if I fail I die. But I can also achieve great success.

Depends on where the Zoo is, africa or something like that, not so much.

Our little town has many mom and pop restaurants and stores as part of an downtown redevelopment. A lot of us are buying gift cards for these establishments now, to be used once this mess is over. The idea is that the shops and restaurants have the money now when it's needed most, to keep in operation. Once everything settles down and the gift cards start being redeemed, the shop is making enough money to cover merchandise or food to cover the gift card purchases.

It's not much but it's a way to support the greater community. Hopefully, it will help small businesses stay afloat in these tough times.

I have to at least give you credit for posting the information. Most Bernie people I have run into simply say stuff along the lines of "...well Trump's like Hitler..." or ..."Republicans suck, that's why..." I may not be bright, but I do enjoy actual information or logic above derogatory responses. So, you get bonus points.

I still disagree with the premise though. For one, saying the word "Socialist" means something in the "American lexicon", is just plain asinine. Socialism, I would assume, probably means the same thing to an entire generation of men and women who fought against national socialists. The whole premise of that party was much the same. That particular group, also chose winners and losers on the business front....much like #3 from your list. What incentive is there to grow your business, if the government can tell you how successful you can be?
It just seems all very "Animal Farm" to me...all equal, only some more equal than others.

I respect your thoughts and beliefs, but I disagree with them.
At this point in time, that's one of the best things about this country. We are allowed our points of view...even if they're wrong ;)

You are missing the analogy that describes what we actually have... We are animals living in a Zoo where most of the cages have been dismantled and the only ones getting fed are the large predators.

I'll take the bait on this one...

So how on one hand do you believe in capitalism...

And on the other hand, think the bosses paycheck should be "capped and redstributed?

Seems to me those two concepts work against each other?

Please explain. Thanks.

I sent my employee home. Does he live pay check to pay check? Yes he does like many others. A little about him. He's a hard working sumbitch and 100% good dude. His wife needs a liver transplant that doesn't look like will happen in time. He spends every waking moment taking care of her or at work. Zero fun time for him. I have no idea how he doesn't crack. The medical expenses eats up every cent he earns. He misses a lot of work due to it too. I told myself I'm not going to ever let him go because he's taking care of his dying wife to the end.
So why did I send him home? If he is out and about and brings that virus home she's a goner. I suggested and he reluctantly agreed it would be best to stay at home and get on un-employment like everyone else in the US.

So to Squeezer, this guy is not a bum. I hope you never end up in a situation that is out of your control like that.

I have (has) 2 employees in similar situations. Both have wives fighting cancer and currently undergoing treatment. Both hold positions in the co where they need to be in customer homes. They got laid off so they could collect unemployment and take care of their wives. When this all settles down they will be coming back.

If this crisis hasnt turned the harden folks, like myself, into more compassionate people than I simply don't know what to say.
I think that someone, like possibly you, or myself, may have always had a certain amount of compassion. You can be a hardened individual, tempered by life as you have seen it, but still inside hold a measure of goodwill towards others. Those that do not see themselves as "hardened", probably are not capable of the entire spectrum, because they have not seen or felt it. They have no basis for comparison, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

Well that certainly is the mantra of the underachieving population who tend to blame their own failures on the rich.

Then we have others that take advantage, like tenants;

I have one who called me a week ago, said they car not making money now and that he would not be bale to pay next month's rent ($2,700). At the same time admitted he is in a cash business making 200G a year. Really!

He suggested I call my mortgage company and ask to delay payments. Nice.

Our city passed some deal where tenants cannot be evicted for several months and any rent not paid between now and May 31 can be paid up until Nov. I hope my tenants pay me, we'll see.

They do have to pay, NO government can do that, it is a matter when you get it back. No government can void a civil contract, only a court can do that. I made a deal, pay May's rent, we will catch up on April through payments later in the year. He is a good tenant, just using me for a bank, nothing new in this business. All the others are fine.

While you are correct, aren't the Sheriffs or other LEO used to carry out evictions when the tenant won't leave voluntarily? I believe that's what they've done, is simply place a hold on eviction enforcement. I see a whole lot of rentals coming onto the market in Long Beach in December.

In Vegas no eviction for 30 days, but I would not that anyway. I self manage my properties, and know all well. All are long term. I have reserves, and I am accomadating.

Interested in what you guys have for ideas. Kinda hard to support when things are on lock down, people are hermit crabbing, and money is getting tight.

Same here...except for the reserves part...I can go a few months, more than that and I'm in a tight spot.

I think this is hitting the young families particularly hard. I know when I was in my 20's, I only understood paycheck to paycheck. I think that's why I'm more apt to help the younger families that are trying. At that age, I don't think many knew how to budget, and sometimes budgeting really consisted of hoping you worked enough hours to both eat, and make rent. If someone is my age, I kind of feel they should know better, and should have some put back. Then again, there is a problem with that thinking as well. There are people I know raising grandkids, and also those who's kids and grandkids have moved in. There are a lot of variables none of us planned for...medical and family can change a somewhat stable financial situation in a heartbeat.

Was just talking with the neighbor next to one of my job sites. He said Torrance beach is blocked off and cops watching. Ramps down to beach blocked and parking lots closed. Home depot and lowes business as usual. They had hand sanitizer and wipes yesterday limit 1 sold out today. I tried to get all the masks they had. Neighbor said his wife is a ICU nurse and was having anxiety yesterday as they told her they would have to reuse masks from day before. I gave him a box for her. Going to search all the work trucks and my garage to see if I have more to give.

I went to home depot in Signal Hill this morning and they were only letting in a certain amount of people at a time...had everyone spaced 6 or so feet apart in a line outside. Fuckers didn't even have my faucet parts.
