That’s weird because a couple years ago pep boys was bought out by a major parts distributor.

im not totally suprised. its been years since ive set foot in a pep boys, but the last time i did, the guy working the counter made the 16YO at autozone look like a rockstar. they probably realized they could make more money per SF doing work than slinging parts. try Ace Auto in HB at magnolia and Adams. the guy working the counters name is Bruce, he owns the place.

Thx, I know ace. Just looking to pick up touch up paint I was a little surprised all they do is service and tires now at least at that location perhaps.

Thats a big retail space to just convert it into a parts warehouse closed to the public. Not sure what the end game is.

Same with the Pep Boys in Upland. They still service cars, but all accessories have been removed until the merger with that other parts store takes affect in February, 2022.

Well if we’re gonna take it at face value the merger is with advanced auto parts.

The Orielly's in Mission Viejo is in an industrial park and has a huge inventory, but very small retail space. I think this is a inventory feeder for all the Orielly's in the area.

Likely same thing going on here. It is too costly to send trucks around from a few large main where houses to "branches" all over. Better to have smaller hubs that serve a smaller number of branches and just run things directly to the hubs.

The manager at the Corona location told me a while back about this situation and said they couldn’t compete with Walmart and Amazon.

Pep boys was bought out many months(probably even longer) ago. They will no longer carry parts/inventory for the public.

I remember my Granddad telling me “When they opened in Los Angles in the ‘30’s we never trusted them. They’re still tricky.”

Why? Nobody knows how to do shit to their cars anymore. And the manufacturers are making it harder and harder every year for those of us that do with the new vehicles. I don't like it but I don't think its stupid

Pep Boy's is smarter than we think: They simply put an end to the $950 giveaway that Ca law now sponsors, brilliant move if you ask me.

Because at first they thought they could compete with the local wholesale distributors on parts that's why they changed there stores a few years ago and expanded the parts side of it ,everyone in the business knew it wasn't going to work because none of us were going to purchase anything from them. Average Joe public doesn't know the difference when it comes to parts they just want a cheap price so buy the white box specials that pepboys had to inventory (which wasnt cheap) . Thier service is god awful so they should of just stuck with selling kraco stereos and turtle wax. That's what everybody goes there to buy anyway.

Had to laugh at that one. I knew a guy from "Santa Anita A's", Model A Ford club. He's since passed on, but his license plate was "Pep Boys". He wasn't young when I met him, had just retired in fact. He was some boss man for corporate. He had been "Moe's" assistant when he was a young fellow in the late 50s. I think he said Manny and Moe stayed with the company, but Jack bailed out very early on...didn't see a future!

My first job was Pep Boys. Back when people who actually liked cars worked there.

Pep Boys in Redlands was great. Need a 12 inch spare for your motorcycle trailer? 3 different times I bought tire (and wheel with air) for $43. NGK plugs for all old dirt bikes were $2.50 right before Covid. They have been discontinued and nobody carries the new number. Better nut/bolt selection that Lowe's directly across the street. Batteries as cheap as anywhere else. In Redlands they closed for Covid and never reopened the store, just the service bays. I never knew why.
On a side note, I just bought 12" of 1/4 rubber gas line at Auto Zone for $7.99 ! I blame Joe Biden.

Pep Boys had cheap bicycle parts when I was a kid. My go-to location.
