RD requested a thread on these, so here's a few of my pops projects. He's always collected / restored things, but really got into the scooters about 15 years ago. He's super meticulous, does everything himself - with exception of chrome & decals. To date he's done about 70 to 80 scooters & kept most of them.

Here's a 57 Isetta:

Finally my favorite & the one my brother & I will fight over - a 39 MotorKar. This thing is unbelievable in person. It & the Isetta have both been on display in the Peterson off & on. I think one other exists, but it's very incomplete - missing allot of parts & unrestored.

A Cushman Truckster:

These pictures are incredible! The work and fabrication he must do is a serious skill. This Cushman is like the one my grandpa had. He worked at the old Lockheed plant at Burbank Airport. He told me that these were used all over the tarmac. He found one and restored as well. He taught me how to drive a stickshift (do they even call it that anymore?) with his Cushman 25 years ago. Stomp on the clutch grind through the 3 gears. Wow, thanks for the memory trigger!

Thanks for the comments, he really does take allot of pride in these. You'll notice they have tags on them, it says year, when last ran, approx. value, starting procedure, etc., he's that crazy about them - it's the engineer & passion in him. Runs them all on Coleman Fuel, which evaporates without the tarnish that can build up in a carb.

The Cushmans are a blast to ride, no sycros in the trannies. Going from low to high, you have to double clutch it & really let the revs drop to avoid all the grinding.

That's funny, just two years ago I paved where the old Lockheed Plant was - had all sorts of issues with contaminated soil.

Leno is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this. I bet he would buy the whole lot.

I'd bet his dad wouldn't sell.. ;)

RD

Right about that, this is pretty much his life.

He's restored / sold some of the Cushmans, Vespas & Harley Toppers. Toppers because he has the corner on the market - they came with a really f'd up clutch design that he's corrected. The others because they're a bit more common.

What he won't sell is anything pre-WWII. Most of the scooters @ that time were melted down for the war, extremely rare if it's pre 41 - 42.

Very funny. In college I bought an FJ40 with non-syncro first gear. When i test drove it, the owner was blown away that I knew how to get into first gear so easily. I told him a Cushman makes this Fj feel like an automatic! It was a great way to learn clutch, because it really forced you to "feel" the gears. Very cool.

Thanks for the comments guys. Didn't want to bug my mom too much, so just got the before / after pics. Pops actually keeps a binder on every scooter, from beginning to end. Think I'm homebound in June, I'll try to snap some pics of the in-process stuff. The creativity in making parts is awesome, not like he can buy them.

Really cool collection. I have a 1939 powell that i'm starting to restore and i'm really interested in getting in touch with your father. Do you think he would be interested in talking to another rare powell owner.

Cool Scooters,

My grandma used to have a engine like that on her washing machine.
seriously, she had an old gas powered wahing machine on the back porch for greasy farm clothes, the engine looked just like that. I remember
that kick start deal. this was in the early 70's

The usual places (ebay, craigslist, swapmeets, etc.) most of his leads come from friends. He actually lines up purchases through the year & every July drives around country to pick everything up.

The red car is a Crosley, don't know too much about it (not too old - think 50's or 60's). Gutless little car, got to slip the clutch like crazy just to get it moving. Sounds like a rattling bean can. Really cool car though, he drives it quite a bit.

Thanks for the comments :D.

That collection is unreal, your old man has some serious talent, and patience. I know a guy that restored an early Mustang scooter and it took him a loooong time. Very cool to see someone keeping these things alive.:thumbsup:thumbsup

With the Pre-War scooter market getting more scarce, he seems to be getting more into the 1/4 midgets. This is the second one he's done, working on the 3rd & he's got 2 more basket cases lined up behind it.
