So damn cool!!!

At long last Bob's your uncle.

"Bob's your uncle" is a phrase commonly used in Ireland, the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries that means "and there it is" or "and there you have it" or "It's done". Typically, someone says it to conclude a set of simple instructions or when a result is reached.

Are we gonna see a similar thread for Nick’s 23 Daytona rehash? I know you said he’s not going to dive as deep as you did, but looks like you guys have some work ahead on it that would be worthy of a RDP chronicle!

Nick tore everything out of his dash and filled it in. His plan is to have a single VesselView and no other gauges.

Unfortunately, after checking the transom, it’s in another shop getting a replacement. It was soaked and rotten.

The good news is they told him “two weeks”, and they obviously have a different calendar than RD😏, because they’re installing the transom today and he dropped it off last Saturday. Supposed to be picking up next Saturday.

As I update this thread I’m sure you’ll see it. He’s got some cool plans for it, but not the bottom work that the StressEliminator has.

Absolutely awesome to hear the results of the first shake down run. I can't even fathom what it must have felt like after all of the work you and the crew have put in. Staying glued to this thread.

Took it out again today in much calmer water, same lake. Conditions were air temp 59°, water temp 48°, wind 3 mph from SE.

Dragged my buddy Crash along, as he’s been involved in this project for 7 years now. He’s got a 24 Skater with that will be getting worked on here shortly. I figured it might prime the pump and get him excited about his project, and enjoy a piece of mine.

The water on the south end of the lake was dead flat. I put another 10 gallons a side in it, and put a different prop on it. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have changed the prop, but I can change it back and re-run it.

In the dead flat water, the hop shows up just above 65, is worst at 75, and is clear by 79-80. It’s better going into the wind. The hop is 1/3 what it used to be, and is manageable.

In 6” chop, it cleans up sooner, and we cruised 20 miles up the lake to the next town at 65; there was absolutely no cruising at 65 ever before, so it felt really good to do that.

Played with holeshots a little bit and as long as the jackplate is down about 1-1/2 to 2” from full up, you can go full throttle from a dead standstill and it pops right up. Any higher and you can’t go full throttle, but can walk it up easy and it still pops on plane nicely, just not as fast.

I let Crash drive a bunch and he enjoyed the DTS, but wasn’t used to the power steering, which he felt took a bit to get used to. He did great, and I moved around the boat to change weight distribution, and watched the water coming off the spray rails and the pod, observing how it hits the gearcase. I need to get the engine higher yet, but in order to do that for now, I’ll need to take my temporary setback brackets and drill some more mounting holes so I can get it high enough. Eventually I’m going to build an 8” setback box with the proper vertical offset in it to achieve the engine height I need. This will help determine that.

Overall, I’m still very pleased with how this runs, and will continue to tweak, adjust and test different things to get this sorted out. The good thing is it’s April and I’m able to use the boat. I’ll keep hammering at the little things and it’ll get where I want it to be.

Now you need to go make sure every screw in your stainless rub rail is straight. Based on the two visible photos you didn’t get them even close to straight 🤦🏼🤷🏼

FYI, I did make an attempt, but this thin old fiberglass just ain’t havin’ it. I tried; live with it, I’ve found a way to, you can too!😂

The trick is using nuts and bolts (machine screws) then once tight you can adjust to perfection 😉

CONGRATULATIONS! I've been a long time (silent) observer and have been very impressed with your time and effort. I truly appreciate you sharing this journey with us. At times I would lose track for a week or two and then binge read the post to catch up. Wishing you great weather/water and keep it right side up! If your ever in AZ, I would happily be a chase boat for you...

thx.sid

After seeing how deep the engine still was last weekend even with the jackplate all the way up, I had planned this week to remove the setback brackets and drill some holes allowing more offset to get the engine higher. Imagine my surprise when I went to do it and realized there were two more holes of adjustment available on the engine mount side! I raised it those two holes and waited for the opportunity to run again.

That opportunity of reasonable water and temperature showed up this morning, so I took the time to go flog the StressEliminator some more with the raised engine height.

I’m happy to say zero hop at any speed! It’s got manners in spades. Still planes well with the 28 Max5 ST, and got to run the borrowed 30 Cleaver again. Very pleased with the manners and outcome. May have lost a touch of speed, but not entirely sure because I was carrying more fuel than normal as well. Time will tell. I’m ecstatic that this is my starting point for the boating season.

Man, this thread is a wealth of knowledge for anyone willing to take it in. And the knowledge applies to more than just a 23' Daytona. Alot of it could be applied to other applications, in my opinion!

@HydroSkreamin , never let this thread die!! I have been a "sponge" all my life, and what I have "absorbed" in this thread is awesome!

Congrats on the awesome results. That has to feel pretty satisfying after all that effort. Well done sir.

I don't know jack about jack plates but damn that motor looks like its really high back there. I would love to see a go-pro vid of the prop in action at speed.

Thanks Lenmann, I appreciate it.

The engine looks high because it is!! I still have 20 lbs of water pressure at that height.

I too am awaiting GoPro footage. We’ll get it soon. Still waiting for weather to come around here, windy and 40’s every day.

I’ve been taking care of the 10-month old honey-do list, but getting trailer buttoned up, running a couple props across it and a new windshield are all getting done ASAP. It’s a great relief knowing that I can basically run any speed I want without issue. That’s always been the goal, and I said I’d give up some speed to achieve that, and after running the math, I’ve lost 2 to the additional weight, and the other one must be from hydrodynamic loss. Pretty fair trade-off for all of the manners it’s picked up.

Looking forward to a bunch of boating this summer.

Well, it’s been a while since the last update.
While I haven’t gotten my honey-do list finished, I have been running props and burning gas when I can.

There was a local poker run in June, so I took my wife for her first ride to watch the fleet take off.

She noticed the difference in ride and lack of hop.

Then it was Father’s Day. My 88 year-old FIL has been hinting that he’d like to see the Wolf River by boat. So I obliged.

To kick off the July 4th weekend, my friend Nick and I decided we’d do a Friday run and take a retired friend for a river run. The day was epic.

Ran just shy of 95 miles. Breakfast in Winneconne, lunch in New London.

Lots of thought, and lots of work. I'd have never had the balls to try it, or the skillset to pull it off. Congratulations!

Now keep water testing, at least until snowfall!

I forgot to post this. My youngest daughter (the one that documented the transom installation 5 years ago) just graduated high school and took a Traveling CNA assignment in Martha’s Vineyard (1200 miles away), so she was absent for Father’s Day.

Imagine my surprise when I get this package from Shutterfly in the mail with a personalized book she has made, using pictures from this thread. Thanks to HeadlessHula for directing her here to get the pictures for the book.

Now I have a hard copy for reference, and don’t have to open this thread every time I want to check something.

What a bitchin piece, eh? I very much appreciate the thoughtfulness, time and effort put into this. It’s really cool.

I’ve posted this previously in The Outboard Church, but thought I’d include it in my thread.

The Friday before the 4th of July, I got together with my buddies Nick and Rick, and we decided to make a Wolf River run. Launched in Oshkosh, ran across Lake Butte des Morts (pronounced bew-da-more) went to Winneconne for breakfast.

Nice shot. That’s right where I mount mine, but I haven’t been willing to put the higher dollar camera in there yet. I’ve got enough trouble-free time now that I’ll do it so I can see what speed the transitions happen.

Decided to try my hand at taping stripes. Let it be known, I’m not going after @Gelcoater for a position, but more about learning what it takes to think this stuff up and DO it. Also, we all know that doing this in paint is way easier than in gelcoat. If you all haven’t read or seen the videos from the gelcoat section here, I highly suggest checking them out.

I’m 65 hours into this process, and just about finished. This includes cleaning, block sanding, paint/clear/blocking again, taping and spraying individual stripes, clear, blocking again, and two more coats of clear. I did all of the prep work and sanding, and a friend who is a painter doing most of the spraying. He did force me to spray some blue, and thankfully it came out ok.

It’s safe to say I’ll have 70 hours in straightening and converting this to something modern with an older flair to complement my boat’s gel scheme.

We shall see how it looks on the stern of the StressEliminator in the next couple of weeks…

Thanks, boys! I’m pretty stoked to get this thing mounted and to hear and feel the V-8 torque.

Gearcase and trim rams are getting the same silver treatment as I did on the 400R.
