does anybody feel safe on rice road anymore??? I'm heading to parker in the a.m and just going the 10 to poston road. I keep hearing about accident after accident and as I have family and grandkids following and riding I figure the extra 25 minutes It's safer and easier Than dodging idiots trying to set a new record getting home. Thoughts????? Mark

I think Friday afternoons and evenings heading to the river are probably the worst... It depends on time of day for me. Never had an issue taking the Indian Highway through Ehrenberg.

River season is over for 99% of the idiots that drive too fast.
This thread has a few pictures of the road in just the past few days.

I think that is a good idea one less person for me to pass
Your'e the reason I am going the other way. I pull at 60-65 if you are pulling faster then I would rather not be around you!!! If you are not pulling then let her rip but just be safe about it. M

I literally have been back and forth on it near every other week this past year and I have really noticed that there have been way less craziness and no really dumb drivers. Perhaps the road has earned a rep to drive with care. There can always be the impatient driver but they're easy to spot give way to.

Pulling at that speed is good and plenty fast, however I am going 80 therefore I am going to pass. Dangerous for both of us. So if people take other routes that is fine with me.

I am driving with the kids to HB at 5am. I feel better on Rice Road than the 40. I almost always chose that route. The only time I'm iffy is Friday nights.

Friday nights and Sunday afternoons during the season is the only time I don't like that road. Lately we have been towing from home and back, so I go through Erenburg and come up. I don't feel like I'm holding everybody up on that road at 64mph.

I just did Rice for the first time in years last year when they had the 10 closed for the washed out bridges. F that. I forgot how jacked up it is with dumb asses passing and relatively blind corners. No way would I choose to take the fam through Rice Road instead of the 10. You guys can keep that 2 lane crap. Not only that, but if something were to happen, Rice is that much tougher for help to get to you. To each his own, but if I had to make the choice, NO WAY.

If that "scared people" part was directed in any toward me (or even if it wasn't), let me just say this... I truly hope you and everyone else here on RDP have another 40 years of no problems.

I fully understand those wanting to get through Rice Rd in a hurry as most have very long commutes home from the River. With that said I carry my trauma bag with me at all times, and sadly have come on scene at two separate fatalities this year alone. This hurry is not worth the lives lost for bad driving decisions and unnecessary passing in horrible spots. If you want to rush home please pass when safe to do so. Also double check your mirrors that no one else is coming up behind you to pass also at a higher rate of speed.

I don't have to deal w rice road. I do take goffs off the 40 to come straight into bullhead city and be dumped on the bridge. Eli likes goffs better because of all the dips. I guess it dangerous because it's too lanes. In not really in any rush but I do drive 70-80. Oh and who tows home anyways [emoji12].., edit oh and I don't usually pass anyone. Once I'm on goffs I'm already here so if I can do 80 cool if not I guess in doing 60 or whatever. The road is the road I'm the driver making decisions.

I haven't been to BHC since I was a kid, but when my folks had a place in BHC we always took the 40E & exited West Broadway & went over the Needles bridge. Is exiting at Goffs a short cut?

As far as Rice goes, it's not terrible, but its 92 miles of a one lane highway, so there are going to be some blind corners, dips, no passing zones & areas where multiple cars, RVs, trucks w/boats are bunched up & may require you to pass, if you choose to do so, safely. Timing is key on Rice. It's the easiest & most direct route into Parker. I've taken Ehrenberg several times, over the years with my dad & it's fine, however there are some speed zones & the police are out there watching for CA plates speeding through, so make sure you slow. All Ehrenberg does is take you into Parker from the outside direction, so you'll end up at the same signal in Parker, just turning right, instead of left.

Supposedly it's shorter. Waze always tell me to go that way. I think it's only around 40 miles though. I like going over the train tracks and through the deserted little town. Sometimes there's trucks but not usually much traffic. It leaves you on the 95 so you come right into the casinos. IMG_3116.jpg

Aww Goffs is awesome! My family took that when I was a kid to go to Mojave. My dad always took that route because I liked it also 😊

We've been driving Rice Road for years with no problems. Weekends, weekdays, early mornings and late evenings. Thankfully we are all still here to talk about it. I've been on both sides of the coin. In a hurry to get to the river for the first trip of the year, and driving at a snails pace without a care in the world. One thing that doesn't change is my anticipation. I ALWAYS anticipate someone passing me and I always anticipate someone pulling out in front of me. For those reasons, I'm usually hugging the right side of the lane and giving as much room to other drivers as I possibly can.

When we get to the point of towing the Howard back and forth, I'll maintain the speed limit and drive as cautiously as I can. Not worth the risk. But we will continue to take Rice Road as the kids have all nicknamed it "The Bumpy Road." :D

For those that travel to BHC from So Cal (LA, Orange or EI) have you ever taken the 15 to the 164 to Searchlight 95 to the 163 to the 95? If so how do you like it? Once in a while when I am running a map via google direction this route will pop up and though it is about 12 miles further it is usually only 5 minutes longer and some times a shorter time frame.

I plugged it into the map and it says you would spend 22 minutes more and 25 miles longer to continue east on the 10 and go north at Ehrenberg. I assume it calculates times at the speed limit...

All the times I've driven Rice, I've never seen anyone actually doing the rock designs. Do people still do that? Or was that all done in the 1990s era?

I never have either. Been like that as long as I can remember however I remember the actual town of Rice and the working 76 Gas station there in the early 70's.

I have seen people placing rocks. If you're cruising by you barely realize what they're doing by time you're well past. Some have been there for many years, some fade away or get disturbed. Some look like they get maintained regularly. A handful of solar lights for memorials here and there, couple with a heavy concrete bench to give respects from.

Something I really want to do is explore the markers along the road closer. Believe it or not but during the Pokoman craze, each of those markers were POI in the game. Daughter read off a few as we drove by and most of them have to do with the old army camps the government had out there engaged in the war games they conducted. Think she said there was a total of 16 different camps spread throughout that area.
